I think Melo doesn't want the Knicks to give up the farm for him either, that would be counterproductive to him being successful in NY. Imho there are 2 possible outcomes, if Melo really does want to play in NY. 1) We get him for a bag of peanuts + Eddy Curry. 2) He straight up signs with us next summer. I don't think Walsh will blow his load here.
Let's hope you're right. But I am pretty sure that Gallo would amount to MUCH more than a bag of peanuts as the centerpiece of our trade. Like Briggs said, I could easily see him reaching a more elite status than Melo when he gets to his prime (something more like a Dirk who plays both ends of the floor). Since he plays the same position as Melo, he is partly expendable.
If Melo were smart, he'd make sure we retain BOTH AR and Gallo, so that we could use Gallo as a trade piece for another star (e.g., CP3, etc.) Walsh blinks now and we're back in shyteland for a spell.
