I wouldn't pay him much more than $6m per unless he develops further. I think defensive presence is more important that size. I think Lee's defense continues to be suspect and makes me want to look for alternatives. The potential for Gallo's development makes me want to hold onto him. But for me, this offseason is a full rebuild, so Walsh needs to look at the available free agents, their respective costs, and the assets we have remaining to determine what is the best team that we can put together for the next 5 or 6 years. While certain younger players may have high values, I don't think any player from a losing team with our record is "untouchable". It really all depends on what you get back. So, ignoring our unrestricted free agents:
PG Douglas
SG Walker
SF Chandler
PF Gallo
C Curry
It seems to me that all 5 positions could use an upgrade. Otherwise, we have a pretty good bench.
Right now we have a roster full of 6th men..other then Lee, when you look at the 4 championship contenders..magic, lakers, celtics, and mavs except for the cavs, not one of our players deserves to start.
I would trade anybody and everybody to get a top notch PG in MDA system..real talk here...if nash can turn avg players like Q rich, bell. Boris, Into a very good players and simutanously become a MVP of the NBA, why look or ask WHAT DO WE NEED..
I have been watching Deron williams lately, and my goodness I would easily give up the ranch, house poodle, and my kids tuition to get him..
Now I won't go that far. Trevor Ariza was the starting small forward on the Lakers when they won. Kendrick Perkins started at center on their team. I think if you move most of these guys to other teams from the Knick rosters they could be starters there. Q-Rich is doing his thing in Miami. Actually most guys that leave here go on to rather productive seasons. Strange really. I'm worry about Lebron and Bosh coming here and forgetting everything they know. I never put much into that Ewing curse thing but now...
I think this team needs a top 3 or 4 options before you really look at whether any of the existing players with their talents as they exist today could be in the starting lineup of a championship contender. Not sure that these guys really get it done though. I mean, for the knocks on Perkins, he blocks shots pretty well. None of our guys do that. Nor do they have size to play the 5. I could see Chandler in an Ariza role, but I think you can put anyone on the court with Kobe, Pau, Odom and/or Bynum and that team is top 5 in the league. I think we need to start collecting top talent that will make the assets we do have better.
