I think we stay veteran and try to trade for one or use the LLE. Forget Branden Jennings--I think we missed the boat on Ty Lawson--that was probably the guy we should have keyed on once curry rubio and evans were gone for the Knicks style of play. I kept reading how the Knicks did not want a small G and we already had Nate but I think T Lawson will prove to be a worthy top pick in terms of quality efficient PG play. He might not score 55 but I think he can run a club and win effectively. I think he would be starting here by now.

I'm not really a fan of Scottie Reynolds. Never was. He can shoot (his 3 pt. % is way up this year) but I never really thought of him as a guy that can run a club at the next level. He's not even a PG at the college level really. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see him as a capable NBA PG....Whole idea of this thread -- I just got sick to my stomach watching Duhon play lately and I wanted to basically try to get all the upgrades out on the table (again, within reason for us, given our situation and inability to do certain things once we hopefully execute our bigger moves) and then try to sort it all out and see what works and what doesn't...

First off, unbeknownst to me before I checked up on it, the MLE doesn't work for us as it seems you have to start the off-season off already in the hole (over the cap) for that to even be an option. This makes adding a veteran-type PG virtually impossible. Right off the bat, you can basically eliminate guys like Ray Felton, Randy Foye, maybe even Kyle Lowry (who I think has a chance to be a real nice two-way PG btw - he's an absolute pitbull on D with great hands and he's got some good quickness, a good enough handle & some untapped offensive ability...I think anyway), unless they come in a S&T or something -- those guys might want more than a strict MLE-type deal anyway... Lowry is interesting right now though --- Houston supposedly wants TD or Hill in any McGrady deal - well they're not getting Hill but I might be willing to give them Douglas in order to get back McGrady along with Kyle Lowry. If they want to do that, I might do that deal...

I can't even think about Jennings or Lawson anymore -- I admit I had my reservations about both at the time anyway to be honest (I didn't like either guy at 8 - Jennings I knew nothing about except that he was getting sporadic PT & wasn't playing well at all in Europe. Lawson I liked but I didn't feel he was lottery material. For the record, I'm still happy with Jordan Hill at 8. Even though he's been jerked around all season, I still feel Hill's a heck of a player and everything Mike wants/needs out of a big man)..What's done is done...I think our best bet is to do what we did last year - attempt to buy/trade for a pick in the 23-30 range. There's got to be a team that'll be looking to deal their pick there (Memphis will have two picks in that range as well as one additional higher 1, the Lakers might look to deal again - they're well over the cap next year and may not look to add a guaranteed first round contract, etc.)... The guy I want there is Sherron Collins. NBAdraft.net has him going within range of our first 2, but I can't see that. Concerns about lack of height/potential to gain weight (which doesn't appear to be an issue anymore) might cause him to slip a little but not into the mid-second round. That's crazy - he's too good. If I'm the Knicks I use that to my advantage and start thinking about him right now. I think this guy's a starting-caliber NBA PG. That's your Ty Lawson right there -- a little small at 5'11"/6' but there's really nothing he can't do well - quick, strong, tough, athletic, can penetrate & excels at the drive and kick game, great handle, can get his shot whenever he wants (a very important quality for me - we have a PG who can't do that right now), great shooter with range, and he's a true floor general. He's running one of America's top teams pretty much to perfection right now.. He's got all the qualities I'm looking for in a PG -- qualities Chris Duhon can only dream about...I say devise a plan to move up enough to have a chance at Collins and then draft either Vasquez for backcourt versatility/depth or Manny Harris for a true NBA 2-guard with that second pick. I'd be very happy with that. Harris may not even last that long however...I know it's against the norm, but I'd look to start plugging specific holes on this team over going with either a decent PF that might be there (if we retain Lee, together with Jordan Hill, do we really need guys like Booker or Gates?) or the best available 2nd round project that fell into my lap with no apparent gameplan. I don't think D'Antoni would play that type of guy anyway so what would be the point? They need to get at least one viable player at a position of need and PG is a huge hole on this team right now moving forward. I wanna see the problem addressed. Especially if the plan is to add a bigtime FA - that free agent's gonna want to see the makings of a complete roster and a direction.. LeBron or no LeBron I think we're a much better team next year with Sherron Collins in for Chris Duhon..

Yes - I've been thinking about Schyer. Reminds me of Calathes a bit = who I really like.

Ill tell you a guy who the Knicks might like--not listed anywhere on drfat sites--Jerome Randle from Cal. He's only 5-10 but he's reminds me of Brooks from Houston. There are several guys we might be able to get who might be pretty darn good players.

I like Randle too. He made the list...Very productive little player. He really is tiny and thin though - I think 5'10" really is stretching it. Quick, great penetrator and a very accurate 3 point shooter. Pretty unselfish as well - I think he led the Pac-10 in assists last year. Very talented - he has a place in the NBA. Question is, is this little fella a starting PG at the next level or a spark plug/energy game-changer off the bench a-la Nate Robinson/Earl Boykins? Despite being that tiny, I think he's a much better talent than Duhon, so when you look at it like that, as a comparison, we could definitely use him. Who knows with our braintrust (watch, they'll wind up drafting two guys no one's ever even heard of, two guys D'Antoni won't even play), but this kid Randle definitely should be on their radar...

maybe this year donnie walsh reads john hollingers column. hollinger was pimping lawson as a steal and jordan hill as most likely to bust.

I don't view the players as busts at all. I think they both have potential. I was skeptical on taking Douglas[and for this team Blair wouldve been better because he can produce now--yet still have hopes for Douglas as he has shown he can score and play D] but I was all right with Hill--not my pick--I wouldve taken Derozan after Evans and Curry were gone--although I am not down on the Hill pick. The problem we have is they wont give him a consistent chance. We are NOT the 86 Celtics--part of the job is to integrate these players consistently--and if not here then down in the D league. These are NOT HS players---these guys are college vets--older guys who need to get in there. No spilled milk about Lawson--I think he's better than jennings in terms of WINNING basketball--but there was enough info out there that suggested lawson was not even a thought for the Knicks because he was 5-11. I think with Robinson leaving that we can look into a smallish quick G who can shoot eh 3 ball like a Randle who has the ball skills and abilities of a PG rather than 2 guard. thats what I am looking at with pick 46-46??? the best guy that has a chance to be an NBA player and possibly give us help off the bench immediately. I think we can get 1--there is a hefty selection of seniors who have been casted off already.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought Jordan Hill was a bust. We haven't seen enough of the kid to tell either way.

But we needed a PG desperately and we passed up a PG touted by Hollinger as potentially great. I wonder if NBA GMs think Hollinger is a joke or something..

if we're lucky enough to sign Lebron this offseason & keep D Lee in the process, i would go after Rodney Stuckey in 2011 & use whatever's leftover in free agency or pursue a trade to add a shotblocker (hopefully Jordan Hill would have already filled that role by 2011)

Here's a guy I've always liked: Patrick Mills. Just sent down to the D-League by Portland for a 2nd stint. Here are his #s in the D-League (4 games total, 1 start):
35 mins. per, 26.8 ppg, 48% FG, 57.6% 3-pt FG (19-33), 5.3 apg, 1.5 steals.

Small sample but those are dynamite numbers, esp. the spike in shooting percentages. That together with his solid overall play at St. Mary's for two seasons and his superb play in the Olympics against the US and our top NBA PGs, tells me this kid can play and play at a pretty high level (D'Antoni was there to see it in person at the Olympics, so were LeBron & Bosh. Just sayin'). I'm interested. Not sure what the Trailblazers think, but I think this kid's much more than some backup PG. I think he has the talent to start in the NBA...Doesn't look like the Blazers will ever put guys like Rudy Fernandez or Bayless on the table in a trade but maybe we can work something out with them where we can get this kid. W/O dealing them Lee (not sure I want to do that anymore - I think Lee might be a keeper here now), it's hard to see a match with the Blazers. Maybe something like Nate, a 2nd round pick & cash for Blake and Mills. That might work. Nate is from the area and is a good friend of college teammate Brandon Roy -- Roy would certainly give his approval & Nate shouldn't have a problem accepting a trade to go there. Despite all their injuries, that team is still 9 games above .500 and right smack in the middle of the western conference playoff picture... Nate would give them some nice, exciting firepower off the bench, esp. if Rudy's back isn't 100% yet. I think Nate would work out well there in this scenario. He wouldn't be asked to run things which clearly isn't his strength anyway. With either Miller or Roy serving as the primary ball handlers, Nate could play off the ball and do his thing. It might retard Bayless' development however, that's the only thing. Last I saw, with all the injuries, Bayless was starting to get some time now and was producing...It's either something like this trade scenario with Nate or we agree to take on salary that extends beyond this year, like the salaries belonging to Webster, Andre Miller or Pryzbilla. Not sure that's a good idea though, even to add Mills. I'm not interested in adding any kind of long-term salary at this time. Not yet. Not until we build this thing up with some primary pieces first...If I'm Donnie, I might look to push this Nate trade...Back to Mills, I agree for the most part with nbadraft.net's comparison to Damon Stoudamire. I can see that. Stoudamire was a little smaller though and a lefty, so maybe more of a Jameer Nelson/Ty Lawson/Jonny Flynn type. I'll take that. I think Mills is just as talented as any of these guys to be honest...

I think Foye and Felton are the two targets. If we miss out on Lebron we want to have some talent in the fold at the guard position just in case we want to swing a trade in the future. Both guys I would imagine would command less then 7 million and would give the knicks so much need production.

The Knicks could also use the remaining cap room to sign a veteran on a nice one year deal.

only way we can talk about those guys is if we don't sign a max player, or you let D Lee walk... if we don't sign a max guy, then you're looking at using up the cap space on D Lee, a PG like Foye, Felton or Lowry, & another role player to fill out some depth on your roster like Al Harrington, Camby, or the like... i doubt Nate is in the cards for us either way, & hope Duhon isn't.

Randy Foye? Rodney Stuckey? Haven't we learned a thing or two about combo guards being forced to be PGs?

If Steve Blake was our worst starter there's no problem with that. Can't have an all star at every position. The lakers and the bull both won multiple championships without having awesome PGs. And he's infinitely better than Duhon. I wouldn't mind signing Blake until we can draft a PG that pans out.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
