Maybe we can bundle the picks with some cash to move up-who knows but I think no matter what we do---the Knicks replacements PG{i mean the guy who runs the show next year] for the NEAR term is NOt coming from picks 46 and 56 --we might get a PG and heck we might get 2 who the heck knows.--------------->How do we upgrade our PG for 2010-2011? I think we stay veteran and try to trade for one or use the LLE. Forget Branden Jennings--I think we missed the boat on Ty Lawson--that was probably the guy we should have keyed on once curry rubio and evans were gone for the Knicks style of play. I kept reading how the Knicks did not want a small G and we already had Nate but I think T Lawson will prove to be a worthy top pick in terms of quality efficient PG play. He might not score 55 but I think he can run a club and win effectively. I think he would be starting here by now.
I'm not really a fan of Scottie Reynolds. Never was. He can shoot (his 3 pt. % is way up this year) but I never really thought of him as a guy that can run a club at the next level. He's not even a PG at the college level really. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see him as a capable NBA PG....Whole idea of this thread -- I just got sick to my stomach watching Duhon play lately and I wanted to basically try to get all the upgrades out on the table (again, within reason for us, given our situation and inability to do certain things once we hopefully execute our bigger moves) and then try to sort it all out and see what works and what doesn't...
First off, unbeknownst to me before I checked up on it, the MLE doesn't work for us as it seems you have to start the off-season off already in the hole (over the cap) for that to even be an option. This makes adding a veteran-type PG virtually impossible. Right off the bat, you can basically eliminate guys like Ray Felton, Randy Foye, maybe even Kyle Lowry (who I think has a chance to be a real nice two-way PG btw - he's an absolute pitbull on D with great hands and he's got some good quickness, a good enough handle & some untapped offensive ability...I think anyway), unless they come in a S&T or something -- those guys might want more than a strict MLE-type deal anyway... Lowry is interesting right now though --- Houston supposedly wants TD or Hill in any McGrady deal - well they're not getting Hill but I might be willing to give them Douglas in order to get back McGrady along with Kyle Lowry. If they want to do that, I might do that deal...
I can't even think about Jennings or Lawson anymore -- I admit I had my reservations about both at the time anyway to be honest (I didn't like either guy at 8 - Jennings I knew nothing about except that he was getting sporadic PT & wasn't playing well at all in Europe. Lawson I liked but I didn't feel he was lottery material. For the record, I'm still happy with Jordan Hill at 8. Even though he's been jerked around all season, I still feel Hill's a heck of a player and everything Mike wants/needs out of a big man)..What's done is done...I think our best bet is to do what we did last year - attempt to buy/trade for a pick in the 23-30 range. There's got to be a team that'll be looking to deal their pick there (Memphis will have two picks in that range as well as one additional higher 1, the Lakers might look to deal again - they're well over the cap next year and may not look to add a guaranteed first round contract, etc.)... The guy I want there is Sherron Collins. NBAdraft.net has him going within range of our first 2, but I can't see that. Concerns about lack of height/potential to gain weight (which doesn't appear to be an issue anymore) might cause him to slip a little but not into the mid-second round. That's crazy - he's too good. If I'm the Knicks I use that to my advantage and start thinking about him right now. I think this guy's a starting-caliber NBA PG. That's your Ty Lawson right there -- a little small at 5'11"/6' but there's really nothing he can't do well - quick, strong, tough, athletic, can penetrate & excels at the drive and kick game, great handle, can get his shot whenever he wants (a very important quality for me - we have a PG who can't do that right now), great shooter with range, and he's a true floor general. He's running one of America's top teams pretty much to perfection right now.. He's got all the qualities I'm looking for in a PG -- qualities Chris Duhon can only dream about...I say devise a plan to move up enough to have a chance at Collins and then draft either Vasquez for backcourt versatility/depth or Manny Harris for a true NBA 2-guard with that second pick. I'd be very happy with that. Harris may not even last that long however...I know it's against the norm, but I'd look to start plugging specific holes on this team over going with either a decent PF that might be there (if we retain Lee, together with Jordan Hill, do we really need guys like Booker or Gates?) or the best available 2nd round project that fell into my lap with no apparent gameplan. I don't think D'Antoni would play that type of guy anyway so what would be the point? They need to get at least one viable player at a position of need and PG is a huge hole on this team right now moving forward. I wanna see the problem addressed. Especially if the plan is to add a bigtime FA - that free agent's gonna want to see the makings of a complete roster and a direction.. LeBron or no LeBron I think we're a much better team next year with Sherron Collins in for Chris Duhon..
