Redd was not coming off a QO year when that happened. he was a different type of free agent. He had played 3 seasons on his 1st extension then opted out.
But why does that make a difference? Just like Nate and Lee would have, Redd had a cap hold ($6 mil). It's the cap hold, as I understand it, and not the precise status of the player (final yr of a rookie contract vs. playing for QO) that enables teams to keep the Bird rights and sign the player for anything up to a max contract even if they had used cap space earlier to sign FAs.

if they sign the QO, they are signing a new 1 year deal. The length of the contract you sign changes your free agent status with a team
the stop underrating David Lee movement 1. FIRE MIKE 2. HIRE MULLIN 3. PAY AVERY 4. FREE NATE!!!

I hope Nate plays his heart out and then be traded to a playoff team who would trully appreciate his talent. Surley New York dosent. Hey remember Trevor Ariza?? I'm so happy for that guy. I hope Nate get the same fortune. They wouldn't even give the guy three and a half million. Hope Lee's agent come down from that cloud.

let's put it this way, if nate + lee sign the QO, there's a really good chance they bounce and the knicks are left with nothing.
