"A lot depends on Gallo," D'Antoni said. "We got to have Gallo step up. We have to have Wilson step up. We got to have a good year. We have to show that Gallo is a budding star. Wilson is a budding star. Somebody's got to go, those two guys and us two. Yeah, we can do that."

anybody take what he said about gallo as an indication that he was walsh's pick and not necessarily his?
I thought that was already clear... I had always hear MDA wanted Bayless but Walsh was blown away by Gallo's workout and that was that.

MDA is right. We need the 6th pick in the draft to step up. We need Chandler who showed he's capable of big things last year to be consistant with that everynight. Multi skilled wing guys... those are MDA guys. They need to step up. If Chandler and Gallo can do good things this year we will see some major progress

I think the type of player that Gallo CAN be is what Phoenix was missing all those years - a big man that shoot outside and has the ability to put the ball on the floor. If he plays the way he's supposed to be able to play this year, it's going to be huge for us (obviously. he's the 6th pick and NEEDS to step up if.) Wilson has been so inconsistent but I think he can definitely fill a Marion type role for this team - we know he has the skills but he has to do it night-in and night-out.

I think that MDA was interested in Gordon, although I am not positive about that.

If it was Bayless, thank the gods that we did not take him.

how about a different line of discussion?

How many people here play competitive team sports right now? And of those how many people have had surgery?

I will speak from my own exerience.

I played full contact football for 3 years and still play baseball (overhand BASEball, not to be confused with softball).

9 years ago I had my knee reconstructed. Torn ALC and MCL. Major stuff. I have NEVER played 100 pain free since. Whats important is its durable and I can perform well. I'm 36 years old. I can still play 4 games in 2 days in a tourney. Of those 36 innings usually pitch 15-16 or so and play CF the rest. I can still run with the kids in their 20s and have yet to lose my CF position despite young talent coming in each year.

Should I be alarmed there is still pain?

Should Gallo?

Guys read something, take one snippet and get so reactionary your like a bunch of women.

I say I like the other dress better honey
You guys hear I think it makes you look FAT.

WTF????

If the guy had a desk job its a different story. He's a pro basketball player. He's lifting weights and running suicides. So his back that just got opened up has a little pain. Lets see him play.

The Knicks should sign you.

Gallo is a great prospect IMO. He's got a killer stroke and he should be able to get by his man easier this season. Anytime you have a big who can shoot with range and put the ball on the floor and drive, he's gonna be a bigtime threat. Gallo has that combination along with a hi BB IQ. I liked the pick then and I still like it. His back issues are a concern but I don't see any need for panic at this point. Let's just hope he keeps improving as scheduled.

I think going forward we have a team with much better size going forward. Chan, Lee, Gallo, Hill, Milicic and maybe even Curry gives us a much bigger and skilled team next year. I'm intrigued by the possibilities.

I think there are a couple of things to think about with Gallo. What is the success rate for players after back surgery? Is the fact that he is still feeling pain and not practicing in contact drills because he is recovering normally or because there continues to be a lingering problem? Will Gallo hold up for an entire season after back surgery? Will he make a full recovery because he is younger? As far as who selected him, I don't think anyone has ever taken ownership of that. D'Antoni distanced himself from the pick and Walsh was non commital.

His back could be a chronic problem, but Gallo wasn't advised by any of the number of specialists he saw to go for a more invasive surgery. it just wasn't that bad of an injury. The pain was debilitating but the cause of the pain wasn't the most serious variety of back injuries. Remember that it doesn't take much to aggravate a nerve and sometimes the nerve just needs to be free of irritation for a while. i think that's why they're taking it slow with him.

Would it be better to wait until the back is fully healed, even if it means missing part of another season, or even a whole season?

Watch how he does decent but at end of next season and after all the talk of Gallo, knicks prefer not to pick up his option so he ends up going back to play overseas.

So much for the #6 draft pick during last yr's NBA draft.

“Not pain-free completely

Well this is going to have to be a wait and see. I would think after several months of rest than surgery and an additional 3-4 months to rest since the surgery he would be pain free. To say there is still pain is at a minimum alarming. We can sugarcoat that but in reality that doesn't sound to swell.

According to his doctors, you are talking out your ass. This is exactly where he is supposed to be. This aint a sprained ankle we're talking about.

Until he has no pain--it's going top be alarming--there is no other way to put it. Anything else is a sugar coat. Doctors can say whatever they want--when there is no pain at all--then we can talk.

This has always been the projected rehabilitation time. It has been stated time and again that he would not be ready for summer league and that he might always have minor pain, but that after surgery the pain would be manageable and should allow him to get regular sleep-- which in and of itself would be therapeutic. This is not sugar-coating. These are the facts-- plain, straight and simple.

perhaps we should level-set our expectations. Normal recovery = alarming?

I'm with Briggs on this one - why is there still pain? If that is part of a normal recovery, then is pain always going to be present at some level?

Until Gallo puts up a full year, I think realistic Knick fans should assume Gallo is essentially a lost draft pick.

I'm not trying to be negative. But this is over a year since the supposed original injury, after 'minor' corrective surgery, after all this rest.

And he still has some pain?

all of the articles today/yesterday point to this as normal recovery from this type of surgery and also point to pain-free at the beginning of training camp. If pain still continues at that point, it surely will be alarming.

But it's like recommending icing down an ankle sprain and noticing pain and swelling 30 minutes after you remove the ice and calling it alarming. This is the back and the timelines are different.

As I stated above, I thought that pain-free was not really a likely scenario, but that this would become manageable.

Great post fish... I was playing competitive basketball up until I was 32(6 years ago) I have never had a major injury, so i can't speak on that like you have. But a teamate of mine, had to have major knee surgery and he is in his 30's, came back stronger than ever after a year and a half, and he still has some pain and discomfort in his knees from time to time, but he never missed a game..

Do you have links for that? I don't remember them saying he'd still have pain 3 months later but I could have easily forgotten. If this was predicted even before the surgery, then it's a lot less alarming.
