A plan with so many what ifs and supposeds really isn't that good of a plan.
Life involves "what if"s; you can't avoid them. The difference between a good and a bad plan is whether or not there are good or bad solutions to each "what if." There are good solutions to the "what if"s when the plan is to have cap space and reasonably paid players. There are poor solutions to the "what if"s when the plan is to keep Zach, Jamal, an overpaid Lee, Eddy, and company.

Aaah I see we've made full circle to the 2010 talking points....the argument that never gets old.

The fact that there even are "what ifs" are a positive in terms of allowing yourself financial flexibility. Having flexibility gives you options. What we've been doing for the past 10 or 11 years doesn't.

i see the positives to the pro 2010 camp.

but i also strongly believe that the 2010 plan was not needed. with d'antoni in the house, and with teams looking to dump major players at 5 cents on the dollar, knicks could've really stocked up like no other team. we're not talking about s&t for jamal crawford or eddy curry...we're looking at guys like camby, diddy, vince, artest, etc. and if d'antoni is the great coach he is believed to be, he would've made it work and made it work big time.

Maybe- I'm not convinced those players were championship guys either. Diddy and Vince have plenty of parallels to Marbury. Camby is aging and Artest is timebomb. Maybe you can get 2-3 of those guys but certainly not all. And actually managing to acquire most or all of them without giving up your picks and young players would've been virtually impossible, and if unsuccessful, basically would've screwed us for another half dozen or so years.

Who are Championship guys in your opinion? Seriously what players would people on this board be satisfied with?

Wade, Lebron, Amare, Bosh, Dirk, Joe Johnson, Rip Hamilton, Josh Howard, Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo. we nab 2 of these and i'd say we're ready to make a run.

Players who are more efficient with their offense and give an above average effort on the defensive end are building block players. Those 4-5 guys can be part of a championship team, but more than likely would be a supporting player to a real building block. Together, IMO they'd be a mish mosh. Baron Davis and Vince Carter fighting for shots and fighting to see who can get on the IR first would be a disaster. Ron Artest just fighting them would be comedy.

I can see people not agreeing with Walsh's draft pick of Gallo. Other then that I don't see the problem with Walsh's moves.

Swapping Crawford for Al Harrington is a great move for the fact that Harrington is a 20pt scorer just like Crawford but has a shorter contract. 2010 or not he came out with the better of that deal. Same production, less yrs, more flexibility.

Zach Randolph is set to make 16mil & 17mil over the next 2 seasons. He gets you 20pts 10rebs but doesn't guarantee you a playoff spot, plus has baggage and doesn't make teammates better. He is getting paid more or on par with James, Wade, Howard, Williams, Paul etc. Plus we had Lee who plays the same position.

Tim Thomas & Jerome James for Larry Hughes
Malik Rose for Chris Wilcox
Signing Chris Duhon for 2yrs MLE.
Hiring MDA

Every one of his moves has great value to it.

Offering Lee 8mil and not giving in to his 10mil a season demands. 8mil is value 10mil is overpaying. Randolph at 2yrs 34mil is not value. Crawford for Harrington is value.

2010 or not these were just flat out good moves. Building a team full of talent regardless of price & fit will get you in trouble as proven before. Paying Zach Randolph 34mil over 2yrs because he can win me 5-7 more games isn't being a good GM.

Is there really a difference between these guys and Andre Miller, Ben Gordon, Ron Artest, Andre Iguodala, Devin Harris, Michael Redd, Carlos Boozer, Chauncey Billups, Danny Granger, and your probably thinking what is my point; well I just think that the players everyone believes the Knicks should wait for is or could be readily available. At the end of the day there really isn't a difference in the level of talent (if we're talking about all-star caliber players). Now I'll give you LBJ and D-Wade are special players but with them on your team there are no guarantees.

Tell me how does one quantify these things and determine if a player fits into this category? But I was looking for you to name actual players not just definitions of how a Championship caliber player play.

Yes, there is a world of difference but I'd make a few changes to Marv's list and take Harris, Billups, and Granger off yours because I've seen no indication that they are available.

well personally i wouldn’t put artest, redd and boozer in the category with the others. but the bigger point is, if you slough the bad contracts, replace them with the right free agents, add a young core of chandler, gallo, hill, douglas and then add a couple of vets i think you have a sound approach. if you try to get those other guys by adding additional bad contracts, losing your young core or giving up draft picks, I think you’re headed for trouble.

No I wasn't necessarily saying that they are available just that these players aren't really unique when you get down to it. They all need help to win a title, they all can put up big numbers, and they've all played well in playoff situations. Though I don't think Granger has been to the playoffs yet.

Marv,

What's a bad contract because on the face Rashard Lewis's contract is ridiculous but Orlando has since gone to the Finals. The big problem with our young core is that someone is not going have the growth the needed because of limited minutes. Does MDA stifle Gallo's minutes for Hill and what if Lee is still here then Gallo and Hill will see even less minutes. How is Chandler going to truly develop if you have Al Harrington on the roster? If your going that direction then draft players and commit to them don't turn around the next year and draft the same position. Or trade for players that will impede the growth of your young players.

well things are really up in the air with these guys. i agree it looks chaotic at the momnet. but if chandler can play the 2 and 3, gallo the 3 and 4 and hill the 4 and 5 then i think everyone can get enough minutes. i think lee will be gone and jeffries with him, but if he’s here, his minutes should be down with darko and hill and a healthy gallo.
