Taken from another board:
just a FYI, I truly believe you got the steal of the draft. Toney Douglas is the only player besides Tim Duncan to win the ACC scoring title AND Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. He torched the best teams, including UNC, Duke, Maryland, Wake, Pitt, Clemson. He schooled Ty Lawson for 32 points. He is the most complete player from FSU I've ever seen, and I've been following the team for twenty years. He is also clutch. He gets better in the biggest games. He averaged a league best 21.5 in all games, increased it to 23.1 in ACC games, and increased it even more to 26.5 in tournament games. And his defensive motor simply does not stop. You guys got a great one. The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. Start Quote
By MARC BERMAN On Draft Night, the Knicks New York Knicks found their replacements tonight for free agents David Lee David Lee and Nate Robinson Nate Robinson , whom they can either let go or work a sign-and-trade. The Knicks think Arizona 6-10 power forward Jordan Hill can be a double-double guy, even as a rookie. Yes, he's not the best post defender but he has more length than Lee, who was overpowered inside. He's a much better shooter and low-post offensive presence. The 7-foot Darko Milicic? He'll be in New York with his agent Marc and Natasha Cornstein and will have a better support group. He's only 24, a sensitive kid whose never adjusted to the U.S. Mike D'Antoni, who understands European psyche, might be the one to get through to the former second overall pick. And the sleeper in all this is FSU combo guard Toney Douglas, whom Donnie Walsh paid $3 million to get in acquiring the Lakers' 29th pick. He's only one Walsh was shooting for. If Douglas was off the board - and Donnie was sweating it out - he would have traded the pick for a 2010 selection. He claimed to have a taker. Douglas sounds like a taller version of Nate The Grate but a better defender. He was ACC Defensive Player of the Year. They have big plans for Douglas. Hill is a bit of enigma. When I started writing about him last week when there were indications he was dropping and could be had, I found a mixed back of opinion. He had a terrific workout last week with the Knicks but one scout said aloud, "Fool's Gold.'' There's concerns about his love of the nightlife and ability to pick up defensive schemes. But Donnie Walsh - I was told - loved the talent. Tonight he said he "maybe will be the best big man in the draft.'' I think Walsh meant aside from Blake Griffin. In a conversation with Donnie during the Chicago combine, Walsh gave me a hint that he may not take a PG. He said because of the way the lottery turned out, a lot of teams ahead of the Knicks were taking PGs and a big man could slip. Bingo tonight. The fans who booed tonight were probably just booing the disappointment that Don Nelson stole Stephen Curry away from the Knicks. There wasn't anyone left on the board the Knicks had to take. Jrue Holiday had a lot of bad workouts - not just with the Knicks - and fell to 17. The Mike Krzyzewski Fan Club - perhaps that includes Mike D himself - put Gerald Henderson in the mix late, but he's destined to be average. Maybe Donnie realized Coach K already steered him wrong with Duhon. Hill, Douglas, Milicic doesn't make them that much a better team next season - just cheaper and with an even healthier cap situation for 2010. Expect Donnie to pull off at least one sign-and-trade with either Lee or Robinson to get another important asset. As for trading for Ricky Rubio, the agent Dan Fegan is capable of making life miserable for Minnesota, but don't count on it. i'm curious tho, is this guy Douglas really our PG of the future? if not, what's the point in buying that pick & giving out a guaranteed 1st rounder contract to him when we could have just signed a LLE type FA to be Duhon's backup next season?
maybe Donnie's reasoning was he thought at least 1 of Holiday, Lawson, Teague, Maynor Collison or Beaubois would fall to #29? or maybe he was high on this kid, who knows? from his clips he looks to be a pretty good shooter off the dribble & can create for himself, but doesn't really show much orchestrating ability, so not sure if he's the longterm answer as our starting PG... is he really an upgrade over Nate Robinson? i wonder... at least he's being talked about as a good defender... still, this guy's gonna be 24 years old next season, how much upside does he really have? i personally still think we're gonna make a play for Rubio or Curry in the coming weeks. I don't think it was ever said Douglas is a PG of the future, mainly because he isn't even a PG. He will just play Nate's role but provide much more defense, less theatrics, more leadership and more basketball IQ. Sounds pretty good to me. He's like a poor man's Ben Gordon.
I think Douglas is here primarily to replace Nate, who I think and hope will be traded this offseason. Thank you, Rick Brunson.

I like the pick at 29, but at this point I think of him as an energy guy off the bench. With Douglas replacing Nate and with Hill and Darko either replacing Lee or just as additions, we're a bigger team than we were yesterday. We didn't acquire a star, but we got some talented players who fill needs on this team.

I don't think we are getting either, especially Curry since he is rumored to be included in the rumored Amare to Golden State deal.
Kahn drafted Rubio because the dude has a major had-on for him. I can't see him trading him, even if Rubio says he isn't coming to the NBA for a few years. Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Posted by TMS: TMS, the Knicks want a guy who can come in and play right away. upside isn't as key as much as ready to contribute. this guy seems to have some nice talent, and gives us a guard who can actually play defense! i really don't think he's as much of a true pg, as much as a barbosa type, better defensively. Forum Po Po and #33 for a reason...

Clearly, all this talk of MDA not caring about defense can go out the window. We got two guys who can immediately improve our team defense.
As for him being a PG of the future - he sure could be if we had LeBron here. |

Toney Douglas is the younger brother of Falcons WR Harry Douglas.
The Knicks just got a solid citizen and hard worker. If he continues to work on his game Donnie Walsh just got a steal. he has decent size and will correct the Knicks glaring weakness of perimeter defense. He ain't Jamal Crawford once a knick always a knick

The Knicks fell in love with Douglas after a workout and bought this pick to get him. Douglas is a bit of a poor man's Ben Gordon, a combo guard who can really light it up. He lets the 3s fly and, unlike Gordon, is a terrific defender. This is a really good pick for New York this late.

The thing I don't like about Douglas is that he's 23 and was a super senior... the guy can play for sure but I'm not sure if he'll excel at the next level because he didn't flat out dominate with his age, experience
That said I do love the pick a whole lot more than the Hill pick... and I'm not mad at that pick, just not excited DLeethal wrote:

He's not a PG but he reminds me a lot of John Starks. A Hard nosed 2 way player. Not the best athlete, but plays harder than his opponent. He is really streaky on offense but on D he will guard both guard positions.
