I've grown up on the Knicks. I've seen many of their games from the 80's 90's, regular season and playoffs. On TV live, VHS, DVD, whatever. I've seen a lot. I don't know what is so funny about that line. I think you're better off sticking to the wise guy know it all act than you are with laughing at something that doesn't make sense or isn't funny. Bone spur still a major injury there cowboy? Keep laughing.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

First off. Grow up. I wasn't refering to you but the line itself. I could care less about your life story or credibility as a Knick fan. Pointless to me. Just for some reason the line came off as a classic schooling moment. Something that old players say to young bucks.

Nice. If you made that clear then there wouldn't need to be a comment now, would there? That line was pointless to me too. Something people who have nothing left to say pull out when they are desperate. It was quite lame but not surprising.

Anyway, back to Oakley as coach. Hire the man. At the very least he will beat the hell out of somebody in practice and Lord knows some of these guys need it.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Yea, that should be our guiding criteria; which coach can inflict the most physical harm to our players in practice.

Guys like Oak are in a different category than guys like, say, Mark Jackson or Nate McMillian. The latter two were more cerebral in nature, as players, and this is why they are more likely to transfer over into decent coaches. I love Oak as much as the next guy, but there is a reason he played the way he did and there is a reason he hasn't coached in the league yet. Sometimes you just gotta let go; can't make every former player you used to looooooove a coach, man!

Still a funny line. My father and uncles used it on me and now I find myself using it on young punks. The circle is now complete. I have become the old school guy and didn't realize it was happening.

By the way, better Oakley than Herb. It's been over 6 years and he can't point to one big man that he made better defensively under his tutorledge.

What exactly has Herb accomplished since he became an assistant coach?

Remember when Herb was supposed to be the successor to Larry Brown? LOL.

I'm not trying to say Herb does alot or is even a good assistant coach, but do we really know how much any assistant coach does? I mean you know some guys like Tex Winter and maybe Tom Thibadeux but really how many assistants get credit for anything?

I know Chuck Daley said his assistants were why he was successful. I know Riley really wanted JVG to go to Miami and I know Lawerence Frank was only a ball boy or manager at Indiana but has been a very good head coach after time as an assistant. I think most good assistants live and breath basketball and are constantly trying to figure out ways to improve their team or beat another team. I think the good assistants are extremely passionate and often times were not marquee players. I don't think Herb is irreplacable and I don't think he has the passion that some of the better assistants have. I do think part of Herb's job is to be the coach that is easy for the players to communicate with and that is very important. Herb is competent but I don't think he is anywhere near the top of his craft. At times Herb appears to be the David Wingate of the coaching profession.

Like Russian folk song mocking Indian culture goes:
"And if you stupid like a tree,
You will reincarnate like Oak,
And then will be like Oak for 1000 years,
Before you die"

how many times have we seen great players suck at coaching? no guarantees oakley will have anything to show for his efforts as a coach.

Thanks Marv, I haven't seen much indication that great players make great coaches or that tough players can teach toughness.

Thanks Marv, I haven't seen much indication that great players make great coaches or that tough players can teach toughness.

Toughness is in the person. It's purely up to them to bring it out. This isn't something Charles Oakley can even force a player to be.

You hire coaches to help develop skills or help with strength and conditioning or help bring out the coaches game plan. You don't hire coaches to turn players into something they can't be or don't want to be.

With that said, if you want to hire Oakley to work with David Lee and Eddie Curry and even Gallinari to help improve their defense, I can understand the reasoning. I don't know if it will work, but if you feel it's worth the try, then go for it.

Herb has served under 5 head coaches now on the same team. There isn't an assistant in any sport that has that track record. He isn't an assistant, he is the team unofficial mascot. The only problem with that is that those were all losing seasons. So the question begs why is he still around when all other assistants have been fired or forced to move on.
