I'm sorry to hear that man. Keep your head up..everything happens for a reason. God will never put more weight on your shoulders than you can handle.
In the meantime..apply for unemployment ASAP...live off that Obama money till u get your job back.
Max now is $430 a week so that's $1720 per month. Try to make it off that while you search.

If that's what you make a month--take it and go find work under the table--as much work as you can find. Let the professional services do your job hunting for you--sometime exposure in the workplace can bet better than sending your resume and knocking on doors. I always believe when you are young---make the maximum amount of money that you can 1740 on the government and another 2000-3000 working under the table will insure you pay your bills and keeps you from getting complacent and reliant on funds that will run out. It usually takes a year or two AFTER a recession for large amounts of job opportunities to become available and obviously this is the worst any of us will ever see--we dont even have a clue about the outcome. Relying on free money that has limits is in some ways the same foundational problem that got us into this mess. There will be a time that you will have to pay the piper

don't listen to BRIGGS... collect that unemployment, take a breather & reassess ur plan for the future... now is a good time to continue ur education & get certified to move up in your career path, or u can explore other career courses & try what u may have always wanted to try but never quite had the nerve to... for u it probably makes no sense to bust ur ass at a grocery store working for minimum wage (not that there's anything wrong w/honest work), but right now that will only add to your daily stress... losing ur job in your chosen career path is stressful enough.

my advice to u would be to register w/as many good recruitment & temp agencies in your field as possible, get ur resume out there as quickly as possible, flood all the internet job sites like Monster, Indeed, CareerBuilders, Yahoo jobs, etc... be proactive in your job search... don't sit idly by & wait for an opportunity to come to you... go out & find it.

most importantly, DO NOT feel sorry for yourself... right now in this economy being laid off is nothing uncommon... don't feel like you've failed... look at this as an opportunity! things always happen for a reason bro... it's up to u to take advantage of this opportunity & not let the situation defeat you... there's absolutely nothing wrong w/using unemployment, u've paid your taxes just like everyone else, u've earned that right.

best of luck bro!

Well my advice is to take half of TMS said and what Briggs said, get a part time job soon and in your spare time follow what TMS says. Working keeps you focussed and less likey to feel sorry for yourself.

Take care dude

just so u know, if u take a part time job in most cases & earn more than the $430 a week u can get max from unemployment, u won't qualify for that week's benefits, so don't think u can supplement ur part time income w/unemployment because it doesn't work like that... if u get a cash paying job off the books someplace as a waiter or bartender or whatever so u can still collect ur full unemployment, that's up to u... of course, that's illegal.

jim, I need to update it, but I'll send it your way later... I really have no idea what to do. I sold financial products, learned to design them... I don't have a plan B. I didn't think I'd need one. I know how to put drywall. I've reported and written articles. Maybe try that. But other than that I can't think of anything to do or a store that's hiring

Truly sorry to hear about this, not the best of times. Have you thought of trying media companies? They could use some analytical help, since no one on their staff seem to know what they are talking about. If you have written articles that may help get your foot in the door. Linked In is a good idea of course and please be ready to move and it may be at your own expense. I work for Fidelity and I can check their website for internal postings to see if tey have any "quant" positions.

I'd second loweyecue's point about linkedin & point out there may be opportunities in the financial advisory world- your financial & sales background should help- I don't know if they are still hiring, but given that many of the positions are heavy on the performance and low on the base salary, there may be opportunities there.

I'd also suggest showing off your expertise on a blog you start- I tend to think employers will research potential employees and if you have good stuff out there- even if no one is reading it, they'll see it & hopefully confirm their thoughts of you.

I'd recommend against media companies- I work at one and things are tough. However, if you can get into entertainment (i.e., movies, tv. etc,) I think that is a better bet.

Speaking of linkedin, perhaps we should create a uk group there?

Yeah... had that job on the condition the project got off the ground. That company started layoff a couple weeks later

I agree, take the unemployment, most people think it is a handout, but it isn't, it is inurance, unemployment insurance that you earn by working , as you have been. TAke it! then hit the market hard, looking for a job in your field or any related field. You may have to take something you don't really like, but you have to eat and live, so always keep your eyes open, but keep your income flowing..

Good luck, and sorry to hear that....

I would only take the unemployment IF I could not find a job or two. Unemployment runs out---jobs sometimes have a funny way of materializing into better opportunities. Right now I would secure a job --probably two. Rely on the jobs not free money. Hard work is always the answer--work hard and it will pay off.

you have to file for it right away though because there's a waiting period

you pay into the unemployment system on every paycheck, so you should pull something back out while you need it

actually your employer pays Fed and state unemployment insurance for each employee that earns at least 1500 dollars or more in a quarter in a calendar year.. so the employer pays it, but we work so that the money can go into the unemployment fund, available for our fellow americans to draw from...

Sorry to hear it man. Its a really bad market out there, but the important thing is to stay positive. I'd take a few days out and really work on your resume. Don't just update it- rethink it- make it an awesome marketing tool because ultimately that piece of paper is a representation of you- a real life 60 second sales pitch.

By all means take the unemployment. At the same time if you're the type of guy that thrives on always being active, then go ahead and find a regular job. Or better yet, volunteer. Volunteering is not only worthwhile and helpful to society- but its an amazing way to make more contacts, network and potentially get recognized for your good work and help you land a job. Plus it keeps you busy during the days and keeps you in the habit of getting up in the morning. If you sit at home all day its tough to break that vicious cycle.

Someone posted some great job sites earlier. Visit those every day and see what's out there. Indeed.com is an awesome way to find listings. Find a company you want to work for and do some research and get on their job site.

And someone else had a good piece of advice when they said look at NYSE/FINRA. Regulatory/Compliance may not sound sexy, but its a good way to be in the industry and there are plenty of jobs available there.

Sorry to hear about this SC. Best of luck.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Can someone hear tell me how NYS unemployment works out????

I make 40K a year and want to have a contingency plan in the event I'm laid off.

How long does unemployment last? How much is it, and is it biweekly or weekly?

This board would not be in existence without my technical abilitites. I know this, I know this and I know this.

As for the search button, if you can'ts find it, it's probably because you have the search button on ignore.

You can collect for a long time now since Obama put in the extension. Max used to be about $400 a week, but Obama just bumped that up by $25.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

SupremeCommander,

I'm sorry to hear about your job loss and I know you've gotten a ton of great advice on this thread.

My suggestion is that you should take sometime off if you don't have a family do something that you've always wanted to do but never had the time. Though I don't know your financial situation and what obligations you may have but if you like to travel get some savings together go on the road start a travel blog. Pick up little jobs here and there to get some extra cash. But use this time to gain life experiences and take stock in what's important to you. See the country or see the world.

I think going from one job to the next job into a career sometimes we put ourselves in a position in which we might have missed out on something (whatever your something is).
