I'd give Nichols a chance. He's got a good shot and is pretty good defensively.

Well, we might sign Douby this next week. He has a tryout (check towards end of article). I'm sure he is the "shooting" replacement for Roberson.
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/2009/02/20/2009-02-20_knicks_rout_raptors_at_garden-2.html Signing Ewing Jr. is a done deal imo. It does a few things: 1. Corrects some bad Karma 2. He can play defense 3. He is developing a much better game. He can pass very good, rebound very good, finish and block shots. Great offensive rebounder. (I posted his stats quite a few times this year and after a few games in the D league he really started to shine). Now, he isn't a great shooter, but he has come a LONG way in the developmental league this year. Not to talk crap, but understand this kid has a GREAT work ethic and a BIG heart. He wants to succeed. So, even if he doesn't shine, I think he is the absolute best 15th man we could find. His defense will be great for practice and his presence great for the fans. He fits a role that we haven't had since Ariza and Balkman were here, but I think he is already better than Balkman, and more than likely will be a better all around player than Ariza (only his shot is stopping him, he already has the rest of the game that those guys don't have). BTW he would immediately become the best athlete on the team (couple that with his game and that is nice). The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. Quincy Douby will be given a chance to win one of the Knicks' two available roster spots when he works out for the team next week. According to a Knicks source, Douby has not been guaranteed a job but rather a tryout before the Knicks' coaching staff. The 6-3 Douby, the 19th pick of the 2006 draft, was released by the Sacramento Kings last week. Douby, who attended Brooklyn's Grady High School and Rutgers University, has averaged 4.1 points in 136 career games. He was misused with the Kings, who tried to make him a point guard. He is a small, quick 2 whose role in the NFL is probably as instant offense off the bench. |

Posted by misterearl: We have two open spots now, three after Marbury is bought out. ( I think he will be). I know what you are saying. Perhaps the 5 should be looked at more than anything else. But D'Antoni is the coach and he don't like tradition centers. Who are we going to sign to be our center? Deadline is over and we just got Wilcox. Three open spots. We could use a 2 to groom. We could use Ewing Jr for more than his numbers. Don't look only at the numbers, you have to include the system and those other things not exactly quantifiable e.g. passion, heart, will, etc. The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. earthman - I hear you and respect your position as well
The idea that D'Antoni has an aversion to traditional centers may be more a by-product of the lack of versatile big men. I don't think D Coach Dan would find a 6'11 facsimile of Marcus Camby to be repulsive, provided he could run, jump, catch and pass quickly out of a double team. The "two" Walsh is grooming is Chandler. The other two is Hughes. A third is redundant. The opportunity of the open roster spots is not for guys who can step in and contribute. If they were that good somebody would be playing them already. The opportunity is an open (and cheap) audition for lesser-known guys for Summer League. Preferably BIG men who can rebound and block shots. I like the sentimental value of Junior Ewing. I just hope he is prepared to ride some serious pine. Does the fiery Mike D'Antoni really want the added headache of NY fans chanting "we want Uuu-Wing" ringing in his ears? I don't think so [Edited by - misterearl on 02-21-2009 11:04 AM] once a knick always a knick

Posted by misterearl: Yup... It would be great having an athletic 6'10"-11" guy who could intimidate and block some shots while hitting a few hook shots and the occasional 15 foot jumper. Posted by misterearl: You got me with the Camby comment, but how many Camby's are there? Every team would love him. For a running team, a traditional center won't work well. I think someone like Camby would be near ideal (can he shoot from 10 ft? I forget). I'll disagree regarding Hughes. First, we don't really know if Chandler will be the two. But, I'm not averse to it, just think he is a better 3. Anyway, Hughes has had problems most everywhere and under most every condition, so I don't think with 2 or 3 spots open that it's fair to say that he is our guy, especially with someone like Douby, who has an audition, there. I have a feeling, due to money perhaps, that unless Hughes tears it up, he will not be back. (Even so, we have alot of expirings for 2010, nice place to be) I can't add much to the argument regarding Ewing Jr. I guess we are all on the same page though (roughly speaking). I might be hoping for him to really maximize his potential and bloodline ;) Just remember that game he played for us... That is why I say the "quantifiable" thing. Sometimes a player just fits in in one place and fits there well. I have that feeling regarding Ewing Jr. (and also Gallo, Chandler, Lee, maybe Wilcox too) I'm just not down with the "on paper" argument any more. Let's build a "team". I'm pretty excited for the team right now. Lee is constantly improving. Chandler also, but much less consistently. We have Gallo who I think will be a star in this system. We got rid of some bad weight and just need to do a few more moves, to realistically get us in a position to grab Lebron and another star or near star. Posted by franco12: that right there is a true free throw line dunk... he takes off behind that shiz & takes flight... i would love to see this kid on a breakaway at MSG... i don't care how much of a knucklehead he is, he'd only be here as a novelty anyway... the main roles on this team are pretty much defined already & there's enough veterans to keep the others in check... we ain't talking about a Marbury type primadonna distraction if we take this kid on. Courtney Sims is having an amazing D League season. He's scoring 22.6 ppg (at 61%) and pulling down better than 11 boards with more than 2 blocks per game. Ewing hasn't done nearly that well (16 ppg @ 46% with 8.5 boards and 1.2 blocks). Ewing's numbers against inferior competition are not at all encouraging.
