""It is about getting healthy," D'Antoni said. "That is the No. 1 priority. I'm not ready to say he's not going to play this year. I'm not ready to say that in a month or two he won't be ready. But realistically I don't think anybody really knows. I'm not worried about it. The only thing we're worried about is getting him 100% well. If it takes all year, it takes all year. But we're not going to push him.
"I'm worried about it, but at this point, we're just going to do what's best for him. He's 20 years old. We'd love for him to play in the next two or three weeks. We'd love for him to play in the next two or three months, but he has to be 100% well. And I don't know when that point will be.""
This is what D'Antoni said on Nov 11, 2008 and I'm going to take him at his word. As far as anyone is concerned, Gallinari is 100% and ready. No reason to hold him back anymore and certainly no reason to use his back as an excuse.
Based on his experience in the "superior" Euroleague and the skills we've been told he possesses, I expect his learning curve to be much shorter than for someone who played in the inferior NCAA. Seeing how the Knicks run such basic sets, it's only a matter of time before Gallinari is playing at least 20 minutes a game and showing why he was the 6th pick. I figure by the all star break. Knicks Medical staff said he was ready to go, so did Danillo, but neither said he was 100%.
D'Antoni didn't play him, so the wait continues. If somehow declaring that you believe Gallo is 100% healthy makes you feel better, go on. But a message board's post does nothing to change the fact that it is a day-by-day issue that clearly seems to be close but not exactly at 100%.
If it helps your "Gallo is a bust" posts, fine. Suit yourself. But whether is now or in two weeks, the main objective for the Knicks and the main hope of the fans should be a 100% healthy Gallo.
No no. The Knicks are declaring that he's 100% healthy, I'm just restating that fact. Go read the bolded parts of that post your quoted. That wasn't me talking, that was the head coach of the NY Knicks. D'Antoni's quotes, as you mentioned before, are from November. The Knicks medical staff gave Gallo the nod. Even D'Antoni, reports said, was surprised but guessed he was ready. Still, Gallo didn't play. Lets see what happens tonight and in the following days, but as another poster mentioned, Gallo's opinion should be the most important here, since its his health, and even him suggested he wasn't 100% but better enough to start the comeback. Given that fact, expectations should be low for sane fans, for masochists, expectations can be high.
He was the 6th pick in the entire draft. Please explain why expectations should be low? Geez, I don't know, maybe because the guy is coming from an injury to start playing in mid season while in pre-season conditioning. Maybe because he has yet to play a game and get in sync with the system. Being the 6th, 5th, even 1st pick doesn't make you bulletproof, as far as I know, so since the guy still bleeds and gets injured, maybe its logical to expect a period of adaptation. I think every player coming from an injury deserves one, don't you think?
Do you read the posts you respond to or are you on autopilot with the big book of Knicks excuses and lowered expectations?
I explained that an adjustment period is to be expected but based on his experience in the Euroleague and his supposed skill level, I expect his learning curve to be a short one. I could ask you the same thing. Your reasoning is based on experience in the Euroleague. No problem with that argument. Mine, on the other hand, is based on a player recovering from an injury, actually the point of this post. You argue that Gallo is 100% healthy based on the Knicks medical staff declaring Gallinari ready to go. I just say that an adjustment period should be expected since he is still rusty for the lack of playing time and lack of game conditioning. But hey, if we both are willing to give him time to adjust, anything else is just semantics. Glad we agree on this.
