jumping up and down is not good for someone's back. if he's not playing, it means he can't play.

I call this the broken record argument. Everyone just restates the same thing over and over again.

The Gallinari Chronicles

1. After suffering a sore back from a hard blocking foul from Tractor Taylor, Walsh indicated that Gallinari will sit out the remaining summer league. Gallinari was originally declared fine during game 2 of SL and was expected to play for his Italian team for the Olympic trials.
2. After reports began to surface about the extent of his pain, Walsh announces that he still has a sore back but nothing serious but will sit out his the Olympic trials but will travel to Italy. Walsh assures everyone that Gallinari will be ready for training camp in September.
3. Reports surfaced in August that Gallinari is still feeling pain and the issue is not just a sore back but a problem with a slip or bulging disc now crops up. Questions about the Knicks medical staff and why did they allow him to go to Italy instead of rehabing under Knick care are reported. Walsh said he will be ready to go at training camp.
4. In September, Gallinari is held out of contact drills, reports of the pain still persist and now reports of pain in his legs begin to surface which requires two cortisone shots. Berman and Isola report that Gallinari may need surgery and will not be ready for camp and maybe not ready for the start of the season and his rookie season maybe in jeporady. Walsh denies this and says that he will miss camp but will ready for the start of the season. As a response to question about this, Walsh calls over Gallinari and praises Gallinari to the press. Berman and Isola continue to write about Gallinari now seeking second opinions from back specialist in NY and aboard.
4. At the end of camp, D'Antoni declares that Gallinari is not ready and should rehab in the NBADL. Walsh says that Gallinari is rehabbing fine and should be ready to go. Doesn't believe he need to go to the NBADL and should be close so the Knicks medical staff can continue to do a great job monitoring his injury (ha).
5. Gallinari continues to get second opinions about his back and was told that he has a bad back but no surgery is require. He will need to get rest and continue to perform back exercises.
6. At the beginning of the season, after playing 5 minutes in 2 NBA games and producing no results, Gallinari informs the Knicks and the media that he has discomfort, is unable to get out of bed and put on his pants without feeling intense pain. After seeking more back specialist opinions, Knicks inform the media that Gallinari will need to rest for 4 weeks and is expected to return at the beginning of December.
7. Status update, the timeline changed to 6-8 weeks instead of the original 2-4 weeks in November. Expected return in middle January.

You're right Martin it sounds like Donnie was upfront about everything.

We're not talking about jumping up and down on his back. Of course that wouldn't be good for it. We just want him to get out and play some basketball.

This is an actual quote from Nov by MD:

"Yeah, I'm worried about it at this point," D'Antoni said when asked about potential surgery. "We're just going to do what's best for him. He's 20 years old. We'd love for him to play in the next two or three weeks, we'd love for him to play in the next two or three months, but he's got to be 100 percent well. From that point, we'll see. And I don't know when that point will be."

Sounds pretty non-committal. Pharz, can you find where the 2-4 week timetable was said?

Another report (not quote) from a November 19th article:

Rookie Danilo Gallinari visited a Beantown back specialist yesterday and while surgery was still not recommended, the new timetable was extended an extra two weeks. According to a Knicks spokesman, the specialist ordered Gallinari to rest and rehab for six to eight weeks. That figure is up from the four to six weeks that was set last Friday from a Manhattan specialist.

November 14, 2008

Gallinari, the sixth overall pick in this year's draft, cannot get healthy. He will be out at least a month and maybe much longer because of a bad back that has limited him to just 11 minutes this season.

The Knicks said Friday that Gallinari will continue to seek more opinions on treatment.

"I just have to be patient," said Gallinari, adding his personal timetable is four to six weeks.

November 15, 2008

The prognosis for Danilo Gallinari's back remains the same, though the timetable keeps getting pushed back. The Knicks rookie Tuesday saw a specialist -- his third in five days -- who agreed with the previous two doctors that his lower-back injury requires rest, not surgery. The new timetable presented to him was six to eight weeks, which pushes back any chance for a return to the court until at least early January. Gallinari, who suffered a disc protrusion after a series of hard falls with the Knicks' summer league team in July, was scheduled to meet with one more specialist next week in Los Angeles. But a team spokesman said the West Coast appointment might be canceled.

As per Alan Hahn:

1:00 [Comment From Anthony (ebsports)]
Hi Allan - Whats the latest on The Rooster? It seems like every month we get a report that hes 2-4 weeks out. Its been the same report since July, whats the real scoop? In a draft where Walsh claimed "we can't miss with this pick", did we miss?

1:08 I watched Gallo play one-on-one against Allan Houston after practice yesterday here. He looked good. Moved well. The guy can shoot it and has great up-and-under moves. That step-thru move, aka, the European Travel (haha). Now it was against Houston, and this isn't 1998, so you would hope he WOULD be able to get off his shot easily. But it was a positive sign to see him moving well. He participated in practice, ran drills and sprints. And then afterward he stayed back at the arena for more full-court work with Greg Brittenham. He told me he's feeling the best he has since the summer, tho there is still some pain in his leg from the nerve issue. I would say weeks is still the term to use. Perhaps on the next West Coast trip right before the all-star break could be a reasonable target if not sooner.

Pharz...what you posted basically points out that the Knicks have been up front, and have basically conveyed what the doctors have told them.

Gallo should just admit his career is in serious jeopardy rather than his "I am feeling better" redundancies .

Well, the fact remains that the timetables keep getting pushed back further and further.

I don't see it like that Andrew. I think Walsh has been upfront about somethings but I choose not to believe that he has been upfront with everything concerning Gallinari's medical conditions. I hope that is the case because the alternative is that this is some serious ineptitude that even surpasses anything out of the Isiah regime.
