i think you have to make the best of what you've got. you plan for july 1 2010 and lebron stays in cleveland, where does that leave you?

i absolutely agree w/u, but that doesn't mean u have to forego any plan for 2010 cap flexibility either... u can still keep building up your youthful core through the draft & by developing the guys we have & stay smart about taking on any more longterm deals... there are plenty of other desirable FA's in 2010 other than just Lebron dude, u know this.

right, there are plenty of other desirable FA in 2010, just like there are plenty of other desirable draft picks in the 2009 draft outside of a top three pick. there are many different combinations of players you can use to build a team and many ways of getting them... i'm not opposed to anyway of getting good players, though i am kind of opposed to just saying let's wait two years before we do anything.

so am i, i don't wanna just sit & do nothing, i wanna start dumping contracts or at least try to accumulate more draft picks while we wait... the LAST thing i wanna do tho is add more bad contracts to our growing collection & hope that's somehow gonna turn this situation around when i know it won't.

Exactly. We've gotten burned time after time trying to do it that way. The proof's in the pudding. It doesn't work. Develop young players, clean up the cap, add the best players you can through the draft and work toward being a player in free agency whether it's 2010 or beyond. We're too close to realizing that goal - you figure 2-4 years if we make the right choices. That's doable - there was a point not too long ago (before Walsh/D'Antoni) where I didn't think this team would ever turn the corner... It all goes up in smoke if you go out and get a Gerald Wallace or a Vince Carter right now. Be patient and stay the course...

What's so bad about quick fixes? They have this man's personal stamp of approval:

Thank you, Rick Brunson.

"The great challenge this season, aside from installing the offense and figuring out how to play defense, is to keep the group from splintering as D'Antoni makes decisions with playing time."

- Alan Hahn

The best way to minimize the battle for minutes is to win. It lessens the second-guessing of the Head Man as seen in the fan panic when the Knicks were 1-2 with Marbury the topic of concern.

Notice how quiet the Marbury situation is after wins - versus losses?

Notice how players high-five and smile after victories?

fuggedabout wishing and hoping for Lebron or artificial, counter-productive, negative strategies to get in position to catch the lingering aroma of his athletic supporter.

Just win baby.

More Hahn...

"Of course all of this is a lot easier right now, so early in the season and with more wins than losses. You have to think at some point players get tired of losing and existing in a losing environment contaminated by selfishness and ego."

"Who will be the first to crack at the first sign of trouble? Or, better yet, who will be the first to show backbone?"

Backbone is what D'Antoni wants to nourish in his younger guys. Guys like:

Collins - who learned backbone from that crazy-man John Chaney
Duhon - who knows Coach K's demand for defensive backbone
Nate - who already has plenty, "you go Nate"
Crawford - the backbone to hoist without conscience, which isn't totally a bad thing
Lee - who has some and needs to draw on it in the transition
Zach - who has always had backbone, but not in a team context
Jeffries - you play for Bobby Knight, you got backbone or else
The Mayor - the backbone of change we can believe in

Backbone.

Get some.

I dont want a quick fix--I believe you try to win when you can. This is not like we are 20-40. It's like a Jet fan saying we dont need Brett farve for a year or two lets go with Clemens. Kind of like what The Celtics did with Ray Allen and KG---these guys were and are both past 30 years old--sometimes you make a calculated attempt to go for it. I am pro-active on being aggressive to get better within reason. And I want to WIN NOW

I have no problem getting Vince... he would be great in our offense, but you can make that trade with expiring picks. No need at all to give up Lee and Galo. Give them Crawford and Malik. Hell... give them Curry and Crawford

a) this is Wince Harder we're talking about right?

b) if you trade any of the youth, better include a bad contract

regardless, trading away our youth for a player who has peaked while also damaging our odds of being a player in 2010

bad bad bad deal

This I can go get on board with. No younglings for Half Man Half a Season.

I shouldve not named anyone in particular other to say can we pull off a Celtic type trade. Vince Carter is a superstar type player who has missed only a few games over the last 3 years and is made for this system. Imagine putting him into Q Rich's spot--we would be very hard to guard.

Vince carter is so "bad" that if he retired today he would be a hall of famer.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I mean if we were able to add VC get Jefferies back healthy in a month and Curry back healthy even in 3 months--we would be contenders. There is no team that great in the east. Vince is a guy willing to make the extra pass and gives us the firepower to get to the next level. A healthy Curry and Jefferies takes away the deficiencies we have against bigger clubs. The cost is a guy who hasnt played one minute of NBA action?

I'm not sure if you think I am arguing with you. I think carter is one of the great players of the past 10 years and I think he has a bad rap, probably most of which he brought on himself.

His ability is undeniable, and he can play 3 positions effectively.

Last year I had a Nets season game package. When he was playing with Kidd and Jefferson, you should have seen him play. He was awful and looked disinterested. My girl was dissing him and so was everybody else on the way home!

Once Kidd and Jefferson got traded Carter looked amazing! He made shots and plays that maybe 2-3 other players in the entire league can attempt and he made it look easy. My girl was praising him and raving about his extraordinary plays and so was everybody else on the way home!

To make a Carter trade make sense there would have to be another star on the horizon to tie it all together. If I knew there were another star forthcoming soon, like Steve Nash, and a decent center too, I would say fuch 2010 let's see how much fun we can have today!

Curry cannot play this system. He needs to be jettisoned out of here. I would gladly accept a Gerald Wallace for Curry swap.
