These last few weeks have really reached unbelievable levels of ridiculousness.

- McCain "fundamentals of economy are strong"

- McCain tries to reframe by saying intended fundamentals of economy to be American worker

- DNC followed by powerful Obama speech to wide praise

- Next AM, Palin nomination

- Parade of charade and lies, and insults by Republicans at RNC

- Public fascination, anger, and obsession with Palin selection, media scrutiny turned into "culture war" game a la Rove leading to a McCain "bounce"

- Investment banking/Insurance/Financial world meltdown

- McCain says let's have a Congressional committee to figure out the causes that most experts are already aware of

- Unprecedented bailouts by Fed and proposed bailouts by so-called small "g" loving Republicans

- Sunday, McCain on 60 minutes, pretty much says, "We need the bailout"

- Tuesday, McCain, ""I have not had a chance to see [the 2 page bailout proposal] in writing..."

- Dems, (and some) Republicans as well as several other experts/observers railing on bailout proposal that allows for no holding accountability and providing CEO's with huge payouts (some of this clearly political posturing)

- Obama allegedly offering to work with McCain on addressing bailout

- McCain calling press conference to "suspend campaign, and postpone Friday's debate because of the crisis

- Obama says crisis precisely why we need the debate

- McCain then ditches David Letterman saying it is because of crisis and needs to go to DC

- While taping show Letterman finds out and shows McCain footage getting ready for an interview with Katie Couric...Letterman says, "Can I give you a lift to the airport?"

- McCain and Obama then release joint statement, where Obama has a few of his own points at the end

- Now McCain wants to move up the debate because Palin isn't ready?

WOW

just

wow

McCain is all over the place on his view of the economy, bailouts, and who to blame..."maverick" to "good ol' boy" to "populist" (talk about flip flopping!)

One can only ponder what this will lead to down the road.

This is looking uglier and uglier for McCain by the moment.

PreIke, you missed the part where McCain blamed the economic crisis on Obama and then retracting the statement. Oh and the part where he accused Obama of being a sexist for the lipstick remark but suggested that others may have misremember his statements regarding lipstick on a pig referring to Hillary Clinton's econcomic plan last year.

My neighbor who began September supporting McCain but now supports Obama/Biden said the man just have to much drama going on in life and in his campaign. I hearing that alot from my co-workers as well.

John McCain and the Economy

"I'm going to be honest: I know a lot less about economics than I do about military and foreign policy issues. I still need to be educated." (2005)

The issue of economics is something that I've really never understood as well as I should. I understand the basics, the fundamentals, the vision, all that kind of stuff. But I would like to have someone I'm close to that really is a good strong economist. (December 2007)

McCain's former economic adviser, Phil Gramm, dismissed people worried about the economy as "whiners."

We "can't pass trillions of dollars of debt to our children." (Jul 2008)

Q: If Americans were asked "are you better off today than you were before George Bush took office more than seven years ago" what answer would they give? McCain: "I think if you look at the overall record and millions of jobs have been created, et cetera, et cetera, you could make an argument that there's been great progress economically over that period of time." (April 17 2008)

"Americans are not better off than they were eight years ago." (April 18 2008)

"The fundamentals of our economy are strong." (last week)

The economy is in "a total crisis." (this week)

*****

Yep, this is the man to lead us out of this financial crisis.

I don't think this is that bad of a statement. It is even smart. Every president needs specialists to advise them.

But as a package, I am not excited about him on foreign or domestic issues. It's his vision, or lack thereof that is worrisome.

It is not about advisors. Of course, he needs advisors just like Obama needs advisors. It is the fact that the guy is all over the place regarding his views on the economy. How can the economy be fundamentally sound one week, but then is in a financial crisis the next. It is one thing to not be an expert on the economy, but to essentially have no clue what you are talking about is just not acceptable.

Hi Izy, but all things being equal I'll take the smart guy with less experience over the sort of average intelligence guy who seems to be a little off.

I would take Hillary if I had my druthers.

You don't have to ask anyone. Just ask W. You've must have missed that big SOS message he sent last nite in the form of a Presidental Address to nation asking for Obama's help in Washington. Oh well, it took him long enough. That plea went out worldwide.

Thanks for adding those details, Pharzone. I kind of lumped Palin's "bounce" together with the "culture war" thing which is related to the lipstick "issue," but you are right that it sure got a lot of attention.

McCain's behavior over the past couple of weeks has been a bit erratic. Obama's not as experienced as I would like, but he is smart and he has managed to keep his cool. Temperament is a valid consideration for the President.

I don't think we need an erratic guy who is prone to making dramatic gestures and swinging wildly from position to position.

As I stated I worked for many "experienced" people in my life. Partners and managers who have vast years of "on the job experience." It never fails to amaze me how much time I have to explain to them how to troubleshoot an issue. They quickly remind me how they didn't have to worry about that stuff in their day and tell me "war stories" about old clients and how times have changed. They make for nice figureheads though.

Ok - I have heard that the Republican base thinks this move by McCain was a brilliant move - are they really that blind?

McCain looks like a fool who is trying to capitalize on the nations economic troubles. Palin cant answer a single question, McCain is flip flopping all over the place on the economy and to top it all off now he looks like a coward who cant show up to the playground for the fight.

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks this was good for McCain is an idiot. I am watching Palin's interview on CBS and I am literally laughing out loud at how AWFUL she is.

The fact that the McCain/Palin ticker is even considered in the conversation shows how SAD the state of this country is. Palin is the village idiot and McCain looks like a walking corpse.

If McCain doesnt show up to the debates tomorrow I see it going down in history as one of the biggest political blunders in presidential politics. Obama will have the country (at lease those who tune in) at his fingertips for the entire hour (not sure how long it will go) and an empty podium beside him. I can see kids in school 50 years from now watching video of the debate similar to how many of us saw the Nixon/Kennedy debate where Kennedy was tan, Nixon was pale and Kennedy came off looking like a superstar.
