Dumping Marbury now is 100% the way to go. I wasn't sure right away but I'm convinced now. We've heard he's in the best shape of his career. He's got something to prove. He wants a new contract. ---- NONE OF THAT WORKS IN OUR FAVOR! Here's why:
He's not part of this team's future. Not anymore. Forget the fact that every team he leaves manages to get better.... If we retained his services, this would turn out to be a year about him. Getting him HIS PT, HIS touches and HIS numbers so he gets HIS last payday. And then imagine if it didn't go that way, what a stink he'd make? Please. Enough already. Along the way, he'd get us some extra wins, sure, because he's talented. But that's not what we need now. Who cares if we win 30, 35 or even 40 games?? Seriously. What's the difference?? 40 games probably isn't even enough to get us into the playoffs - the East is a lot deeper than in past years. So what's the point? More wins but not enough wins is the worst thing for this franchise at this point - for any lesser NBA franchise that's rebuilding for that matter. It's NBA purgatory. We need to rid ourselves of Marbury now and start concentrating on what's important and what will help us:
(1) We have management and a head coach in place that players want to come and play for. A huge plus. (2) We have a handful of young players that need to be developed at this point, win or lose. Developing young talent that you'll be counting on a few years from now, when you're ready and expected to win, should be the focus now. I can deal with losing, as long as I can see our young players developing on a nightly basis. We lost but Chandler had 30/15 with 3 blocks, Gallo went for 20 and looked smooth & healthy, Gallo and Chandler CAN play effectively together, Nate hit 5 threes and ran the offense, Mardy Collins had 8 dimes and 3 steals off the bench....that type of thing. This is another year where winning is not important. The focus now should be to play and develop these young guys to the point where they're ready to help that FA star (hopefully LeBron) when he gets here in a few years. Then and only then should the Knicks expect Ws. Shit, if everything breaks right and we assemble a team like that, I'll be the first one expecting wins. (3) Continue to focus on the draft next summer. The more wins we get w/o making the playoffs severely hinders our draft position. That's the absolute last thing we need. We have our pick in 2009 then we surrender our 2010 1st to Utah. This 2009 draft is already shaping up to be a deep one. At the top, there will be big-time talent available at almost every position. Whether it's Hasheem Thabeet, Brandon Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Ricky Rubino, Blake Griffin, James Harden or DeMar DeRozan. It's important that we're right there in a position to get one of these guys.
Come up with a style of play & develop all of our young talent, be in position to grab the best draft pick possible next summer, hopefully acquire a pick in 2010 for ourselves somehow and clear enough cap room to get the best FA available coming up. That's should be the formula. Just stick to the formula. Notice how keeping Marbury and 'winning games now' has nothing at all to do with any of that...
