"Hey that's what I see. I quickly warmed up to this pick once I started really looking at all the available footage on this guy. I think we got a good one here - has a chance to be special. My bet is we got a guy that will eventually be a player maybe not as good as Larry Bird or Dirk Nowitzki but hopefully better than Keith Van Horn, Detlef Schrempf & Toni Kukoc - all guys he's been compared to. Back injury aside (and with training camp right around the corner we're gonna find out quickly how badly he's hurt), I don't see why he can't come in and contribute right off the bat this year. Funny though, if you ask Clyde, he'd tell you we just drafted the next Jackie Butler...."

Good post, but I just found this funny. Larry Bird, Dirk, Keith, Detlef, Toni, this is such a varied group. It just makes me laugh how everytime a white guy comes into the league everyone picks the same 5 names.

True Bip but the one thing these guys have in common is their good shot for their height and Danilo def also has this skill.
So its more than just the skin-colour. Another guy, that he has to prove he is not like who also has the same shooting touch is . . . Channing Frye. Same issues actually... him being not tough enough, having a good shot but not the rebounding and defence... anybody sees the similarities?
Im not saying hes gonna be like Frye but simply say we got to wait and see if he is more in the mold of Dirk or in the mold of Frye!
Okay of course Danilo can put it on the floor a LOT better than Chan... ;-)

Plenty of black guys have had good shots for their height(channing being one of them) but every white guy is compared to the same five. Bird was known for his outside shot, but was also fundamentally sound in every area of the game. A great passer, slow footed, tough rebounder could post up etc. Kuckoc was a slick ball handling big man that could create from the top of the key and was also a good passer. Not really considered a big post up guy. Dirk is no where close to the toughness of Bird and prefers to play on the perimeter and is at best, an okay passer. While Bird had versatility in his offensive game and the ability to take you down low or out high he was not considered a "creator" with he ball. Stylistically and with their games these guys are as varied as it gets. It's like comparing the next great PG to Marbs, Chris Paul, John Stockton and Mark Jackson. It's not that big a deal, I just find it funny.

I've only seen film and one summer league game for Danilo. My closest comparison stylistically is Kukoc.

From the most recent Hahn blog:

I wrote something for the print edition about Danilo Gallinari's back issue. The Knicks aren't saying much of anything about it. A spokesman told us that the injury "is not a serious concern" and the fact that Gallo isn't running pick-up with his teammates right now is because the team "is being careful" with the prized 20-year-old rookie.

No exact definition of the injury has been given. It was called "soreness" in July and nothing more has been said. Anything after that has been speculation. Gallinari in July did make reference to having shooting pain from his hip and hamstrings to his back, which could be an indication of a nerve issue. But, again, we'd be just speculating.

I dismiss the "damaged goods" conspiracy theory which some on this board seem to relish discussing ad infinitum in the same way that I pay no attention to the rumors that Obama is a Muslim.

I also think that Gallinari will be fine, and in a few years people are going to saying that we were fortunate to pick him up.

I will say this, however, the Knicks and Walsh did not help things out with their lack of transparency on this issue. The Knicks have been about as forthcoming with info on Gallo's back as Sarah Palin has been on her positions on the issues.

If they had been honest about things in the first place fans would not be as apprehensive as they are now.

in light of the newest developments revealing gallo in fact has no spine, the PCA (protozoa coalition of america) has just named danillo gallinari their man of the year. when asked to comment on the situation, the CEO of PCA, mr. wobbly wigglesworth III said "i'm a protozoa, i can't speak."

To hasten the recovery, Gallinari was given a cortisone shot on Monday. It typically takes three to five days for the shot to have an effect. Just 20 years old, the 6-foot-9 Gallinari is versatile and highly skilled and considered a potential star.

Ummm........... I'm probably wrong, but don't players get those kind of shots to stop pain to INJURIES that can't get any worse, because they still wish to play??? LOL

actually those shots are not for pain, but for inflamation. If the pain does subside it is usually due to the swelling in that area going down....

my impression of cortisone is a heavy duty Aleve/Ibuprofen.

I agree with you here my friend. I though this was one of the changes we would experience under Walsh. Not sure why we are holding it so close to the vest.

I hope Gallo's learning a lesson on taking care of his body. It may seem impressive to stand up to big guys like Trailer, but you've got to protect yourself and pick your spots.

It's been over a decade since the Knicks would talk about injury information. This was while Grunfeld, Layden, and Isiah were president. It's the team policy, and it's not gonna change.

Despite back issues, Knicks rookie forward Danilo Gallinari is expected to be ready for training camp when it opens in less than two weeks, according to New York Times.

"Everyone is extremely optimistic that he’ll be ready to go when the bell rings at the start of training camp," Gallinari's agent, Arn Tellem, said.

Gallinari has not played basketball since the middle of July when he injured his lower back in Summer League play.

The Knicks took Gallinari with the sixth overall pick in June's NBA Draft.

Good point allanfan.

Gallinari's summer league raises questions on whether he'll be durable enough to withstand the NBA's physical pounding, at 6-10, 227, as a rookie. A European source said Gallinari had various hamstring and knee problems in Italy, but a Knicks source said that was "growing pains."

What does a European source gain by lying about "the gall" ? Nothing

What does the knicks brass gain by lying....more season tickets bought expecting to watch the community pick play this yr.

I guess we will find out once the season starts and his career gets going. I still don't see the point in constantly arguing over this. It's clear that Briggs and Playa think he was picked solely to please the fan base and that he is damaged goods. It's clear that Nixluva thinks that he will be the next Michael Jordan(). And it's clear that none of us have any idea. But when the next story comes out good or bad, we will all be hear bickering about whether he is damaged goods or healthy as a horse.

There were other sources from Europe that said the kid was tough, also he didn't miss much game action due to any of those so called injuries. Until this kid misses games, I think we shouldn't be to quick to label him as fragile.

You can be built like a tank and tweak your back just picking up a newspaper.

In terms of Gallo's game i'd say he reminds me of a cross between Odom and Kukoc. I think he's gonna be a good one, especially under Mike's system.

Good comparison. I do see some Odom in his game. Hopefully not the pansy side. I'm with you. I've heard so much information about this kids back. I've heard people say he's fragile. I've heard people say that's cr-ap. I've heard people say he's soft. I've heard people say he's fearless. I've heard people say he constantly misses games and i've heard people say he rarely misses games. Each time it's a scout or a coach or a "European insider". Either side will be true. Let's all hope it's the healthy side. it's not like we can give the pick back. Not sure why some can't move forward.
