Okay, there is NO WAY we are going to get Dampier or LaFrentz. You'd have to package up just about every useful player on the current Knicks to get either of them, and even then, it wouldn't be too likely that you could get a trade done.
Which would you rather have if you were, say, Mark Cuban: LaFrentzz, or Houston? Hmmm, that big contract, and face it, I'm already deep at the 2. Finley posts numbers pretty close to Houston.
Thomas? He didn't play for Nellie before, so why would now be any different? Besides, At forward, I'm not taking Nots or Najera off the floor. Sure, Thomas is a better center than Bradley, but that's not really saying much.
Elisley? What, behind Nash? I've got Van Exel kid!
And as for the rest, I can't think of anything that the Knicks could offer for LaFrentz.
Dampier? 8ppg? Thomas does that and more. Okay, but lets look at that trade critically. The Warriors have Foyle, Jamison, Claxton, Sura, and Fortson. I'm sure the Knicks wold love to have any of these players...but there's isn't really anything to offer in return. THomas and (pick somebody, empty the bench, whatever) for Fortson & Dampier. For Jamison and Dampier. For Dampier and the Warrior's towelboy.
The point is, the Knicks have a bunch of overpaid, mediocre players, and that makes for some difficult trades.
A more reasonable trade would be for Ostertag. He's not the best, but he's solid. He too can put up 8PPG, has reasonable defensive skills, and can, and has, played 25-40 minutes. Now, he's always been teamed with a strong PF (Malone), which took the heat off him in the middle.
Ostertag with Thomas/Lampe up front, KVH on the wing. Doleac or Vranes off the bench at the 5. That's not a bad frontline.
