Right now I live in Murray Hill and pay up the wazoo for a studio, but I have like a 6 minute walk to work and I love living in the city. I think its totally worth it to love in Manhattan, but not always the most realistic or smart thing to do, cause you'll have to pay a boatload.

Is that in New Providence, Des?

Murray Hill is 42nd street east of 5th avenue, down to about 28th or so.

u ever hang out at Margharita Murphy's on 3rd ave? i used to go there to watch the Yankee playoff games w/my buddies.

That place is like 2 blocks from my apartment, but I usually next door to the Wharf Bar if I hang in the area to watch games, and sometimes Peter Dillon's up the street.

damn i'm surprised i never ran into u then... do they play the commentary loud at those other places or no? that's really the only reason i went to MM's to watch the games, cuz i hate having to try & listen to what the announcer's saying over the loud ass voices of a buncha drunken idiots.

On a side note, it'll be interesting in a little while when I get into work and give my two weeks notice.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Well fish, you know what they say:

"Jersey girls aren't trash. (Trash gets picked up)"

I saw that on a t-shirt once.

But, staying in Northern New Jersey is definitely an option. I do like the town I'm in, so if I can stand a long commute maybe it's not a bad idea to stay. It certainly appears more affordable for the quality of town.

Yeah the commentary is key, all though sometimes not having to hear Michael Kay is a welcome refresher. Dillon's will play commentary, Wharf I think if its a big game. I've only been there for a year though- you probably went out to LA by the time I started going there.

If you are willing to commute from a more suburban town, there are a lot of towns in Bergen Co. (Where I grew up) and Hudson Co. that are excellent places to live. Usually just a short bus ride into Manhattan.

I think you may like Astoria......its literally 10 mins to the city on the n/w train. You say you like quiet but wanna live closer to the job? This is probably the closest and probably more your speed.

The w train just got the worst report on the rider report cards though.....the 7 train got the 2nd best, which I have no idea why cuz its crowded as hell and the smallest thing turns into a major incident on the 7 (like last night where a 35 minute ride turned to 2 hours!).

One thing I can say about the 7 train is its clean. Other than the 4,5,6 and maybe the L its the cleanest one. I think LIC, Astoria, even a little further in like Jackson Hts. all are good options.

i live in jackson heights and it's real nice. about 30 mins from union square by subway. jackson heights, elmhurt or woodside, you should be able to find a place easily for less than $1500. a monthly unlimited subway card is about $80.

I know the cleaners on the 7 and they work hard. They don't look like it but they sweep every train and mop every other one with that convoy of mofo's that ride that line. Its crowded on the 7 24/hrs a day. You'll be suprised the amount of people you see @ like 2am-4am. There are some hard working/partying ass people out there.

Word......long island city(LIC), astoria, sunnyside, woodside, jackson heights are probably what you're looking for Solace. I personally like the look and feel of sunnyside queens.

I grew up in astoria, near the 46th street subway station. 20 mins to Grand Central. My mom and aunt still live in Astoria and I visit often, like 3 times a yr Go live near Steinway street, best pizza The Villa, go to one of the corner carts and have Soulvaki(sp?) or a Sabretts dirty water dog with mustard and onions. There aint nothing like sitting on Steinway street on a saturday afternoon in an outdoor cafe and watch the girls go by!! Heaven does exist and its called Astoria and Steinway Street!! My kids grew up there and still love it to death!!

Thanks, and I appreciate the tips from everyone.

As for the $2k, I'm sure I have a Monopoly set around here somewhere.

Hahaha. They walked me out... they were very cordial but they walked me out. Apparently, it's some unwritten company policy. An extra paid two weeks off? Thanks!

take it from an HR guy, they walked you out for a reason....you are in a position where you could potentially "steal" tech secrets and take to your new place, so s.o.p. (we do it at my company too) is to walk the person out the day they give notice and pay them two weeks 'in-lieu' so they can 'respect' the date in your resignation letter.

make sense?

as for places to live, i work in jersey city and live in manhattan. i take the path train from christopher street to grove street hich is an 11 minute ride. union square is only two stops higher on the path - so total commute would be 20 minutes to union square. rents here are cheap too and they are building up the city here as well - lots of shops and restuarants and good views of the city. somthing to consider.

Thanks for the tips. I guess what you're saying makes sense, it's just that previous companies were more concerned about me transitioning the work to whoever will have to pick it up. I was surprised that this was their standard policy.
