![]() "Did you guys know that NYC's population equals that of 39 states total??? That should give you an idea of just how rural this country is and that 39 states do not speak for everyone. That means 11 states have the population power and we know those are major metropolitan areas. "
The above statement is incorrect. I was very surprised when I read that statement, and thought it was a pretty cool angle to look at the United States. But since I lived in Louisiana and Michigan, and know their population size, the numbers did not add up. Below are the population for the 20th-30th most populous state. The total for those 10 states are about 51 million, while NY is about 19 million. In case you're curious, I heard somewhere before, the 200 most populous cities in the US makes up about 1/4 of the US population (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0763098.html) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_population 3 3 New York 19,297,729 ... 20 20 Wisconsin 5,601,640 21 21 Minnesota 5,197,621 22 22 Colorado 4,861,515 23 23 Alabama 4,627,851 24 24 South Carolina 4,407,709 25 25 Louisiana 4,293,204 26 26 Kentucky 4,241,474 A 27 Puerto Rico 3,941,459 27 28 Oregon 3,747,455 28 29 Oklahoma 3,617,316 29 30 Connecticut 3,502,309 30 31 Iowa 2,988,046 ... ![]() Posted by Hank: I got the information off of Wikipedia. The information is still there under 'Demographics of New York City' (check it out, fascinating information), and it actually says what I stated above. BUT' I just went through the numbers myself and figured out that the information is misquoted. The actual figure is that 'the city of New York has a larger population then state - by - state.' 39 states to be exact. Still a fascinating stat and I still contend that it shows how rural the U.S. really is in the middle. Thanks for pointing this out Hank so I could correct it. I'll never trust this' team again.
