You really believe Zach Randolph would come off the bench? And that Eddy Curry is worth keeping?

Rose is not a real possibility. If it happens, it happens. But it hasn't and it probably wont. Even with Rose this is a flawed plan.

Improving can man many things. From winning 23 games to 30 or 33. That's not much of a difference to destroy your salary cap space over.

Getting under the cap doesn't mean improvement either. And getting under the cap is not a real possibility. If it happens, it happens.

And why is Rose not a real possibility?

And I never said Curry is worth keeping.

Actually, getting under the cap by 2010 is extremely possible under a competent GM than winning he lottery or 2nd pick.

you are going to have to help me understand how extremely possible it is.

What's the cap going to be? $60M?

Which players are signed, which are going to pick up their options, who are we going to extend and at what price, which expiring deals are we going to just let expire... and after that, what's the tally for salaries that year (including two more draft picks).

Getting under the cap is possible, but that is going to require trading the younger veterans like Lee and Nate for picks. Let the expirings expire, establish a core of players on their rookie contracts, and wait for the monstrous contracts to expire. If it is at all possible, trade players for shorter contracts. For example, Kidd seems to be a shell of his former self right now. Let's say the Mavs miss the playoffs...

Something like Lee + Nate + Curry + Crawford for Kidd + Bass + picks

The Mavs get a rebounder, post scorer, big guard, and three point shooter... all of which would look good next to Dirk and Howard. I feel like all those players would be effective in Dallas, but I could be mistaken. The Knicks get close to $50 million off the books as Kidd, Marbury, and Rose expire... none of which is eaten by Nate's and Lee's extensions.

BRIGGS, stick to your draft analysis. Your Knick trade ideas aren't too bright.

Let me see Kenyon Martin--proved he can stay healthy this year and still play at a high level. A truly respected tough guy in the paint

JR Smith--every game this guy impresses and improves
--even if we tipped a tad over the MLE it would be a better deal than Jefferies James Weatherspoon and whoever we wasted near mLE on combined
2 lottery picks

Not for nothing--but that is NOT bad--that is NOT a bad scenario at all.

Lee Nate and Marbury
for Kenyon Martin resigned JR Smith to a 5 year 35mm$ contract and pick 14

That rids Denver of their contract mess and they get three high quality players two of which fit in extremely well with their high tempo style. They get rid of the Martin contract.

i am not enamored w/JR Smith at all... i wouldn't give up Lee for the #14 pick straight up, so i don't see why you'd wanna take on KMart's contract & do the Nuggets a huge favor in that regard & give up Nate in the process... if we're taking KMart (& you know i don't mind that idea as much as a lot of other people around here), then we have to be unloading some bad contracts of our own, like Zach, Jefferies, Curry or Q Rich.

Malik, Jefferies & Nate for KMart & the #14 pick is what i'd offer... if DEN says no, that's fine... if we're giving up D Lee in the deal and taking on a huge contract then i want a top 7 pick.

JR Smith will put up over 20 a game before his career is done, he absolutely lights it up off the bench for Denver its a shame George Karl doesn't play the guy. I'm not sure though, briggs, if you don't want to pay for david lee you're gonna have to pony up big $$$ after the JR contract ends and i'm not sure he's the guy you build a franchise around. i think he's a headcase (though very talented). for some reason i just can't shake the feeling he's the next rodney white.

we already have a guy putting up over 20 a night... we need a floor general who can lead these guys & a defensive frontcourt.

I think Zach stays for now. I think Curry goes because he's easy to trade and 7 footers who can shoot just under 60% and score like he does always have value. His contract isnt insane either.

There are other trades out there for sure.. we will see.

I think adding Smith would add needed size athletic ability length and firepower to the backcourt. But the full trade we add the defensive big man/policeman we've obviously been missing + we can add two really good prospects in what will be a very good darft. We have no 7 footers and we can have our pick of the liter. In best case scenario we get Rose and a 7 footer--we need a 7 foot guy who can play--we need to add that to our team. We get a little bit of each item in this trade. Unless we were getting Gilbert Arenas or someone of that value JR smith is the better prospect than some guys who may be available like Ben Gordon.
