I think if you don't mind not being in the center of Manhattan then those options work pretty well.
Long Island City is right across the East River from Manhattan and near good trains for getting to the city. The 7 train will link you to pretty much every major subway and take you directly to Times Square, Grand Central Station and Bryant Park/Old NY Public Library.
P.S. 1 is a cool museum too.
Yes' P.S.1 is' a cool museum. But just make sure you get on the right train, going in the right direction. It's easy to get lost. Make sure. Don't trust people on the street. Show no fear, but don't be a jerk either. Just keep moving at least until your in midtown. This is not to bum you's out, but just to give you some heads up advice.
I always advise people visiting, get yourself an area map and take it to the top of the Empire State buidling. You'll get a pretty good idea where your at on the ground, when you get an entire view of the city in your head. The tip of Manhattan is always considered more south and Central park is always considered more north. Slightly off, but it helps. From those two points, you'll pretty much know what direction your going, when in Manhattan.
Once you get the hang of it, you'll have fun. Let us know how it went.
I'll never trust this' team again.
