and who else really is in the running in the NL?

Hanley Ramirez
.334 BA / 24 HR / 67 RBI / .564 SLG / 309 TB / 45 SB

This kid is the best player in the NL without a doubt... Ryan Braun & Prince Fielder are in the running as well:

Ryan Braun
.334 BA / 27 HR / 73 RBI / .644 SLG / 233 TB / 14 SB

Prince Fielder
.284 BA / 40 HR / 99 RBI / .600 SLG / 298 TB

eh, today was a give a way game to rest some of the hitters.

Delgado will be out for a week with that hip injury, ugh ...

Collazo and Humber looked good out there

it's September and you know what that means ... Phillies choking, yup Myers and Gordon blew the lead and the Braves won. hooooray

Yep, giveaway game!! Maybe they should have given the starters a couple of at bats at least. Although since Maine was "off" today, it probably wouldn't have mattered. I just hope they don't go into a losing streak like we know they can do.

Pedro is a smart pitcher, he realizes that he's not the old Pedro and is using his experience. I lot of so-called power pitchers have a problem adjusting when they lose their stuff. Go Pedro and Glavine. Go Mets!!

I think if David Wright keeps on his overall pace and the Mets finish with the best record, he's got a strong shot at finishing in the top-3 in MVP votes, better than any of his teammates, including Reyes.

He came on strong leading into the 2nd half of the season, he's on pace to put up the best numbers of his career, and a 30-30 season is all-but secured.

Against him, he's merely above average defensively (probably not gold glove caliber, at least not this year), and "the other" NY 3rd baseman is putting up unbelievable numbers that dwarf his.

The media seemingly really wants Reyes to be great - they plug him like he's the most amazing player ever. He might be one day, but clearly, Wright's the best player on the Mets. This season, his numbers are more like a great Juan Pierre or Scott Posednik season than something truly great. He's a fast leadoff hitter... and he's a pain in the neck... but considering he's stolen 70+ bases and has ONLY scored like 100 times, that doesn't seem super outstanding.

It might be improper to suggest this to Mets fans, but I think Philly's Jimmy Rollins is having an outstanding season, better than Reyes's, on another winning team (albeit not as winning as ours).

wright is statistically in the top 20 in almost every offensive category including stolen bases. he is having a great year though not phenomonal. it should be good enough to win mvp at this pace. i agree that statistically rollins is having a better game than reyes. however, take reyes off this team and we would suffer a lot more than if you took rollins off the phillies team. reyes is our sparkplug and catalysts for our team. even if he is not on offensively, defensively he can be a playmaker.

Nah Queeniepop, let's set The Way Back Machine to just 10 days ago...

jazz74 -"exactly want i am saying. (Mets) have the most talent than any team in the national league but you know what is holding them back? no heart. you don't see any hunger in their eyes. they seem like they are going through the motions. phillies to me are an average squad. but they keep beating the mets because they have the heart. when they play the mets, you can see in their eyes that they want to beat us and there isn't a damn thing we can do about it. that is why i am sick of rooting for these teams and they do sh%t! and cook i hope you are right and i would be the first to apologize in november but we might not make the frigging playoffs let alone worry about the world series. i can't see us winning until we play the reds next week and we end up in second or third place next week. and randolph with no urgency and no sense of accountability. i am starting to get sick of him too."

Well, there you have it. I wonder how many people are sick of the heartless Mets and their no-accountabilty Manager Willie Randolph. No matter what October brings, the Mets played through change and lived in first place from wire to wire.

I could be wrong, but that look in their eyes may not be one of "hunger", but they are flat-out kicking major league baseball booty when it counts.

Major props to Omar The Wise for the acquisition of the rock-solid Luis Castillo.

Viva Los Mets!

Wright is having a very good year, but he's surrounded by much better talent... look at the seasons those guys i listed above are having now (updated stats are even more impressive) & those guys don't have the luxury of playing on teams stacked w/as much talent as the Mets have right now.

i am not retracting my statement yet. if the mets play the phillies this weekend and go for the jugular, then i am partly convince. however, this would be a major disappointing season for the mets if they do not make it to the world series with a significantly weaker national league. this should be their year and they should be playing in november. so until that happens, i will still be skeptical about their play. but wouldn't it be justice if the phillies did make it to the playoffs and we played them the first round and swept them?

inter-division teams can not face off in the division series. they can only play each other in the championship series if both advance.
