Isn’t it time the truth was told? It was all part of a research project.

Researchers were interested in observing the response of internet sports forum participants to lack of access to their favorite forums.

Researchers speculated that after an initial period of frustrated clicking and a brief “withdrawal” phase users would content themselves by visiting other forums and check back in a day or so.

To the researchers astonishment, users continued to click compulsively on their favorites and bookmarks, even though it was obvious that the site was down. In one particular instance, a user tried to open up the “UltimateKnicks.com” web site an astonishing once every ten seconds for 18 hours straight, three days in a row for a total of 19,440 clicks. This sports-forum addict refused all food and liquid sustenance during the blackout period.

Users were also observed in the following futile activities:


* Checking their email for information from the web site’s administrators about the outage.
* Scanning other forum sites for information about the outage.
* Wishing there was a backup site or mailing list
* Wishing that the site was running on a regionally diversified cluster

“This was a particularly interesting and amusing experiment” said one researcher, who said we should just call him “Marty” to protect his identity. “Those idiots just kept clicking and clicking! Ha ha ha ha ha!”

“And they had no idea what was wrong or how long it might last. Hilarious.” chimed in his buddy, who went by the nom de plume of “Andy”.

The research project ended early on Monday 8/20 after many users developed carpel tunnel syndrome from clicking on their UK favorites or bookmarks. “It was time to end their misery.” Said Marty. “We’re not totally without compassion.”

FU Marty and Andy! After about 100 clicks I just setup one of my Linux machines to use a GUI functional tester to keep clicking the refresh button on firefox every 30 seconds that is pointing to www.ultimateknicks.com! So who is the chump now partnah! Carpel tunnel my ***!

martin - is briggs still having problems logging in b/c over at realgm he said when the site came back up last monday, he still couldn't log in.

All jokes aside, I think we all can say we are pretty attached to this site. We are creatures of habit so we are gonna keep coming back. If Martin and Andrew can't keep the site up then we are gonna have to settle somewhere else. No big deal.

Still if there is going to be a shut down the brothers grim should show is some love and let is know. Nothing crazy, just a thread. Or at least send out a email to the regulars. I kid you not, a lot of people sent me emails wan ting to know what happened to the site. I felt like an administrator or something. Its cool though cuz I'm a regular and I guess people figured I would know something.

Not a biggie. Martin and Andrew are running this themselves. Its a hobby not a job. It shouldn't have to be. You guys do a great job with the site.
