bipp - I hear you, but just for the record, can you really say the Knicks have had a player of Zach Randolph's skill set in the froncourt since...?

or when was the last time a versatile 6'8, 230 pound skill forward was dropped on the MSG doorstep?

Being in shape is one thing. If Eddy Curry reports at 270 I'd smile, but I'm more concerned with his overall development as a more complete player in the team concept.

Zach? Playing better defense is a team thing based on communication, matchups and knowing responsibility..., it's not simply totally on one individual.

Are you anxious to judge the results of the latest moves in November or February?

They are, after decades of primarily mining the quick-fix free-agent route, finally on a steady path to procuring young talent

< Too lazy to read every responce so I don't know if it's been said already.

Remember when the Knicks were blowing the lead, I think it was against the Warriors and he re-grouped Chandler, Nichols, Robinson, and Morris and told them to play defense and making hand gestures as if he was telling them what they were doing wrong.

Renald is the man!!
some Knick fans accept mediocrity as excellence .... I don't!

blueNorange - excellent point, leadership is a by-product of having courage and rising to meet the responsibility for making decisions. Whether Balkman is elected or appointed captain, he is already demonstrating the characteristics of a leader.

I just enjoyed the way he popped Nate upside the head when he tried to get out of line with a ref during a game. Nate got the message and chilled.

Best part - The young Knicks stayed poised and won the game

Captain should be someone who the other players respect. Balkman is showing some good leadership qualities, but he is only a second year player. He will be the guy to energize the team with his play - which is more important than having the captain title anyways.
I'd vote for Malik/Q

Right now QRich is the best choice for team captain on the Ny Knicks. He's not afraid of getting in your face telling you what should be done or not.

There was one game when crawford kept ball-hogging the ball every time the ball was passed to him. Q got in his face and told him to pass to an open man and stop hogging the ball.

Q is a vocal leader and doesn't care who how much $$ you make or if you're the franchise player, he will still get into your face and tell you how it is. That's the quality of a captain.

HE is also an emotional player and you need that from a team captain.

Woodman - I like Quentin, but my next Knicks captain is a deliberate reach of a pick from the age-24 and under Knicks that will determine the fate of the franchise for the next five years.

I don't think Q will be around in five years. Heck, the brotha better be in the gym losing the 30 extra pounds he gained post-op.

but it's all good

I think the Knicks might be best with a Balkman/Lee dual-captainship. Those two are heady players who make things happen and are always in the right place when opportunities on the court come their way. Neither is our best player, but they set a great example about effort and achievement to our younger players.

Marbury, Crawford, and Curry might have more refined talent/skills... but that doesn't necessarily make them good leaders. They might just be too talented to understand and teach hard work.

It's the same theory that says that the best players often don't make the best coaches.

Q is definitely a good candidate for captain. Assuming he is relatively healthy, he should play enough to warrant being the captain and he has the strength of character and unselfishness we need in a captain. However, Marbury and Crawford are likely to be the appointed captains due to seniority and their importance to the offense. It is unfortunate, but that is what is likely to occur.

technomaster - you may or may not be too young to remember the frustration of coach willis reed as he would stomp his feet on the sidelines when another assignment was blown. you make an excellent point about leadership and its relation to understanding hard work.

My wish is that the Knicks captaincy is not a by-product of locker-room politics, but the ultimate reward for the players who will set the tone for the head coach when he is not in the room or in the huddle.

Balkman and Lee as co-traffic cops would be perfect.
