the magic now have to become the knicks. they must now use expirings to add talent. i think they should try and make another trade for one more expensive player to put with shard + dwight. then surround them with cheap LLE/MLE vet talent.

they should go after artest.

JKL(Boston, MA): If you're Orlando aren't you better off saving that cap room used up on Rashard Lewis to see if you can grab someone better next season?

Bill Simmons: (12:36 PM ET ) Wait, you think they would have been better off not paying a $50 million player $126 million? Are you sure?

Kevin (Chicago, IL): Rashard Lewis' deal is awful, but it can't be the worst Max deal ever. Who is the worst player ever to get a max deal? Marbury?

Bill Simmons: (1:09 PM ET ) No. it's the worst max deal ever. It's the worst sports contract in history. They gave a max contract to someone who has one skill (scoring), and he's not even that good at that skill. He's like a better Hedu Turkoglu. He plays 40 mins a game, scores 20 points and grabs you 5 boards. Congratulations.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (NY): Worst player to get a max deal? Wrong Knick. It has to be Allan Houston. I'm a Knicks fan, and this huge mess they call a franchise all started with him getting top 2 guard money. They even had to make a rule for his contract.

Bill Simmons: (1:11 PM ET ) At least Allan Houston was the best guy on a team that made the Finals. What has Rashard Lewis ever done? Sonics fans thought he was soft and unreliable... even in their one playoff run two years ago, he was hurt half the time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tim (DC): Keith Van Horn was a worse max contract, hands down...

Bill Simmons: (1:11 PM ET ) I'd rather pay $71 million to KVH than $126 million to Lewis.

Apparently, Lewis contract is based on $110 million but he has a bunch of bonuses that could cost the Magic $124 million over the course of the contract. Why would you need to give bonuses and incentives to a guy who just signed $110 million contract? Info coming from Sportszone updates.

Bill Simmons must have forgotten that the Yankees just signed Roger Clemens to pitch 3/4 of a season. With very little possibility of the team making the playoffs.

Clemens agreed to a pro-rated one year deal worth $28,000,022 or about $4.5 million per month between June and September. - wikipedia

You know they gave up the #15pick(Stuckley) in this yrs draft for Darko, And now they might not even resign him.

And if this report is true about them overpaying Lewis.

Then they have set themselves back.

Allan Houston was a better player IMO when he signed that contract, though neither was worth it. It sounds like Lewis' worth slightly more than Allan's right?

You would think True would be this serious about his own team...........Wheres the OWNED pics with the donkey getting kicked int he nutts True????

Oh I get it...In order for us fans to feel proud and maintain a strong sense of pride we must look at other GM's/Franchises who make equally bad mistakes when it comes to cap mismanagement.

Even if Otis Smith signed Lewis to a half billion dollar contract it doesn't make I SAY UGH any less of an imbecile.

You further confirm where our standards are at.

Where are the stupid Midget Owed pics??? LOL

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Rashard Lewis formally joined the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, leaving the Seattle SuperSonics after nine seasons when the teams completed a sign-and-trade deal for the high-scoring forward.

The Magic sent Seattle a conditional second-round pick, while the SuperSonics earned a trade exception believed to be in the $9 million range.

Lewis agreed to terms with the Magic earlier this month, yet no deal could be closed until Wednesday, the first day that the league's free agent moratorium was lifted. The six-year deal -- Lewis agreed to a five-year pact, but the sign-and-trade allows an extra year to be worked into the contract -- is expected to be worth at least $110 million.
"Rashard is a young, athletic forward and a proven scorer in this league," Orlando general manager Otis Smith said. "We feel his skills will be a tremendous addition to our team and we are very excited to have him join the Magic family."

So from various sources I've read it's $127mil(Sonicscentral) $126mil(UK), $124mil(UK), $118mil & $100(Realgm) $110mil(Insidehoops) LOL!

Either way the Magic paid a hell of a lot more than they should have. Probably double.

I thought he was going to sign for $85mil no matter where he ended up. He was coming off a $60mil contract and he improved as a player over the course so obviously he was going to get a substantial raise, but yes he's overpaid.

On another note...

It's amazing how Seattle rebuilt their franchise in a matter of 3 weeks but we can't rebuild here because it's just impossible to do.

Really? So Seattles now a finished product? I expect nothing less than Western conf. finals...

"Rebuilt" is the last word I'd use to describe the Sonice right now, especially after Durant's first few outings as a pro.

Premature in the word chosen, I meant they've almost completely laid the groundwork. They tore down their franchise in a matter of weeks. In 2009/2010 they'll be set. They won't be saying for 5yrs they are an unfinished product like we have been.

Isn't this about the time you show up on UltimateMagic.com and have some stupid wiki link to lewis and bash the fans of the magic?
Let's go Knicks. That's amare

I'm not sure about that. Lewis is the better scorer and rebounder. No doubt that they are overpaying at $97 mil or whatever it is. He's still a perfect fit for them, though, and they have a much better team than we do now--i.e., as a Knick fan, I'm still jealous of the situation the Magic fans have.

I don't believe this at all.

It doesn't fit the CBA salary cap guidelines

RealGM Note: In addition to the above, the maximum player salaries for first year salaries in new contracts (those signed after July 10, 2007) as well as the first year salaries of maximum extensions (signed prior to the 06-07 season) will be the greater of 105% of the player's previous salary or the following:

$13,041,250 for players with 0-6 Years of Service

$15,649,500 for players with 7-9 Years of Service

$18,257,750 for players with 10 or more Years of Service

Therefore I don't buy the other part of the story. It's speculation and hype.

From Orlando Realgm Board
With the 2007-08 salary cap set Tuesday night at $56.63 million, Lewis’ first-year salary with the Magic will be $15.64 million -- the maximum allowable for a player with nine years of NBA experience. It was reported earlier that Lewis is entitled to make 30 percent of the salary cap when in fact his first-year salary will be based off the Basketball-Related Index, a figure the league uses to set the cap.

From the upcoming season, Lewis will get 10.5 percent annual raises. That will take the deal to $17.2 million the second year, $18.9 million the third year, $20.5 million in the fourth year, $22.2 million in the fifth year and a mind-boggling $23.8 million in 2012-13, the final season of the contract.

Exactly what I thought his salary was going to be factoring S&T deal.

Ben Wallace isn't really overpaid. He only has 3yrs left on his deal and it depreciates. I don't understand why everyone thinks every NBA player's market value is MLE.

And then tragically you end up with 50 win team with several young, versatile, improving, two-way players.

Dumb move by the Magic. What if he gets bad knees like Houston too. There's no way they'd be able to afford a buyout of that type of contract. Bad contract, overrated as heck player even before the contract, or at least I though so.
