Nalod comes with The Mahavishnu Orchestra!!!

Might as well mention Return to Forever.

And also, specifically Al Di Miela's "Race With the Devil on a Spanish Highway" -- LOVE THAT SONG!

Frank Zappa is amazing too.

I limited my original answer to heavy / old / obscure / new + promising bands. But a lot of the bands that other people here have mentioned would also be on my list. Good thread...

Love me some Achtung Baby.

And the song With Or Without You is one of my all-time favorites

great thread. great posts.

a few of my faves:

jimi hendrix – are you experienced. Holds up as maybe the greatest rock album ever. foxey lady, purple haze, fire, manic depression. Every song a killer.

cream – best of. 2nd only to hendrix for “power trios.” clapton’s guitar, jack bruce’s bass almost like a 2nd guitar, ginger baker’s unreal drumming. sunshine of your love. crossroads. politician. strange brew. sunshine of your love killer stuff.

j geils band. Their 1st (“j geils band”) is one of the most kick-ass discs ever. Driving beats, wailing harp, great rhythm work, perfect voice for their sound.

jeff beck – truth. great guitarist. rod stewart on vocals when he was a hard rock/blues singer. the beginning of “you shook me” one of the greatest sequences ever.

janis joplin – cheap thrills. loved that girl. check out piece of my heart, combination of the two, i need a man to love. no one had the sound she did.

buddy miles – one of the most underrated figures in the history of rock. best of buddy miles. them changes, we got to live together, miss lady.

elvin bishop. rock my soul. he cut this album after he left the paul butterfield band. it’s so f’g good its sick. rock my soul, holler and shout. has one of my favorite chick singers, jo baker, on several cuts.

zz top – greatest hits. la grange, tush, i’m bad i’m nationwide. hard-driving texas boogie. these guys are irresistible.

popa chubby - big man big guitar. motorcycle mama, keep on the sunny side, hey joe. local guy, crazy talented rocker/bluesman. plays around town a lot.

are you afraid of the dark. great ambient rock sound. highly recommend to see them live and pick up their cd. guitarist doesn’t know s**t about basketball but i love their bass player.

best concert ever attended– jimi hendrix, 1969.

best hendrix collection i ever saw – fishmike’s.

I tried to keep it towards "ROCK". ITs hard to disagree with you though.

I just picked up a SACD copy of Miles Davis "Kind of Blue". Neat to hear the old classics with this new technology. Detail is wonderful and the subtle nuances of these recordings really do add to the mood they were going for.

We might want to add Classic Steely Dan to the list. "Bad Sneakers and a Pina Colada", they talking about Starbury 30 years ago!

Marv. YOu going old school for sure on this one! Janis sung the blues and is really underrated at times. Listening to her and you feel the pain.

Some put Carol King? JT? This is rock? Great song writers no doubt.

We forget classic Eric Clapton? Dude kicks heroin and then records "motherless children". Very heavy! Great licks! "Why does love have to be so sad" great guitar!

since we going old school, how about Stevie Winwood and TRAFFIC? Kinks? Blood Sweet and Tears? The Faces? Spencer Davis? Chicago Transit Authority? The Nice? Emerson Lake and Palmer? Culture Club? (see if your paying attention!), the whole roots reggae thing with Marley, Tosh, Bearning Spear, Greg Issacs, Mad Professor and Jimmy Cliff!

"vietnam" by jimmy cliff is one of the greatest songs i've ever heard.

i didn't put sly because i usually put him more in the funk category but "a whole new thing" is imo one of the best albums ever recorded and the 13+ minute version of "sex machine" from "stand' one of the greatest individual songs of any genre.

you mentioned some other great oldtimers there. i saw al kooper play a 60th birthday show with jimmy vivino at joe's pub a couple of years ago. talk about a touchstone of rock history - dude played with bs&t, jimi hendrix, bob dylan.

You're thinking of Do You See the Dark, bro. And their guitarist happens to be very knowledgeable about bball. Their bassist is hot, but she likes Eddy Curry.

Love you for the plug, Marv!!

I didn't want to kill this thread with a plug for my band. This thread is too good to die already. I can't believe how many sick bands were mentioned here. I really geeked out when the fusion started to enter the conversation. My first concert, when I was 7, was Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke and friends. My second, when I was 8, was Al Di Meola at what was once called the Paladeum and is now an NYU dorm. Damn!!

Here's another list of awesome rock music:

Van Halen
Judas Priest
Motorhead
Megadeth
Slayer
Testament
Sepultura
Whitesnake
Radiohead
Sublime
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Aerosmith
The Police
Mogwai
Sigur Ros
Jeff Buckley
Clutch

Also, not rock -- but must see if you are in NYC... Wayne Krantz. Look him up. He plays every Thursday night.

Anybody mention run dmc? They are the kings of rock afterall.

How bout staind? That lead singer makes you want to kill yourself and everyone near you out of sheer depression, but they are still pretty good.

Limp biscuit is probably the first rock, or whatever they are band I ever bought. Everything else I own was purchased after I got in my 20s.

How about linkin park?

How bout no doubt? They did a little bit of everything. They are supposedly a ska band.
