What kid at the college age doesn't get in trouble with all that money at their disposable?

The only different is our goofups wasn't sprawled all over the newspapers and air waves and theirs are.

Shouldn't owners/gm's be accountable for drafting or acquiring troubled players, don't coprorations in america do the homework before they shell out millions of dollars?

IMHO instead of putting "ALL the blame on the players , most of the blame should go to the scouting staff of each team in professional sports, especially if their "true" intentions are to clean up the league.

Acquring talent is one thing, but if your focus is cleaning up the league why not fine NBA/NFL TEAMS ETC .... for drafting or trading for troublemakers !!!

They are being held accountable. So are the players, the commissioner and everyone else involved. When your sport is not as popular as it used to be that means everyone is being held accountable. 'That's why they are making changes. That's why we had an age restriction and salary structure changes. Now maybe instead of making excuses for anyone associated with the league why not ask everyone to clean up your act. Age is an excuse for being naive. But it is not an excuse for being stupid.
I just hope that people will like me

No bip the owners are not responsible, the commissioner is trying to conceal the bad judgement that teams make in choosing talent.

If the leagues main focus was cleaning up the image , they wouldn't take chances on questionable character just because of talent they posses.

Where is the Integriety of each NBA owner's scouting staff to not select those type of players in the draft after doing a complete background check? Don't character schools in college do just that?

IMHO that would

But the potential $$$$$ signs is what drives owners to embark and take the chance on seedy players with a questionable reputations.

I went to a conference a few years ago and met a stockbroker, a successful black man who had some NBA players a clients. He was giving them up.

Why I asked?

He said that he did not have any other type of client constantly making idiotic decisions that were disrespectful to money and himself. These guys never understood that money was to be put away for later years.

They bought so many cars and houses and never realized the upkeep of them either.

Ok, thats easy.

Then he had two occasions guys storm in their office with a posse with guns who misunderstood their statements and thought they were getting ripped off. They were, but it was not him, it was the idiotic player who gave a few people Power of attorney and they were taking money. Oh, and when the market dropped they thought he was ripping him off. Basically the posse was always trying to "protect" them but were very ignorant about most things relating to money. In fact, the hairbrained schemes the posse cooked up were ususally what kills the financials.

Other things: he said that his white clients don't do those things, nor call him up in the middle of the nite and demand he roll with them. Then get in the limo and find guns, drugs and naked women about. This guy is married with kids, being in the wrong place with a guy like that could kill a career and standing in the community.

He would make an appointment and prepare for an important meeting with the attorney and accountant only to have it broken at the last minute time after time.

He listed lots of things these guys do that his white clients don't do! IT was very funny. He of course said his black clients other than the athletes were great also!

Does this represent the majority of the NBA I asked him? He said no. There were the Shane Battier's (and for that matter most of the duke players except Maggette) were great, as were most of the blue chippers. But the big big money just gets blown. The college kids, and those from middle class families tend to "get it" and use the money wisely. He still hsa a few of them but they are not the big crazy money.

He said the immature player that came from nothing have a hard time with the stress and act out in strange ways.

But he said the white athlete is no where like the black athlete when money comes to them. Many of the white guys really sock it away and if anything are afraid if it. They wait untilt he playing days are over and then get involved when they can pay attention and learn about things more.

He really alluded that most of it had to do with how they were bought up and not so much race. He thought if a white redneck from a disfuntional famlily with little education had the same situation that similar ignorant activities would occur (financially).

I'd agree with most of that.
