I think the difference between Bird & Dirk could be broken down to the will to win.

Stats are comparable.

I hated bird as a knicks fan- he always won- the celtics always got the calls- always.

I think the comparison to make isn't Bird vs. Dirk, but maybe Bird vs. Nash.

Nash has put together 3 outstanding seasons in a row... but what the heck was he doing before he hit 30 and starting winning MVP awards? And other than willing his team to a regular season victory over Dallas last week (which, as far as I know, was not a decisive game 7 playoff victory for the NBA title), Nash has accomplished less than Dirk in terms of the playoffs.

I attribute a lot of Nash's greatness to the sheer underrated coaching of D'Antoni. Overall, I rate Nash's career accomplishments behind those of semi-contemporaries Cassell, Kidd, and Payton.

Well, it's settled then. Dirk is approaching Bird's stratosphere; certainly he won't be up there until he wins a few titles. Of course, winning titles isn't everything, neither is the amazing perception of "clutch."

I don't think anything is settled other than some statistically derived parity of production numbers. But I don't think a person has yet weighed in who's watched them both who thinks they are in the same league. In the same sense I don't think Marbury is a spectacular PG even though only he and Oscar averaged 20/8 (and this is not the point when I will a show how fallacious that comparison is). Nor that Francis is a historic great even though only he Magic and Grant Hill averaged 20/5/5 over their first 5 years (or something like that.) Even Antoine Walker posted gaudy stats for some part of his career, but how "great" is he?

If you guys want to base player assessments on PER and the like be my guest. Heck, at one point in time Jerry Stackhouse had a higher PER than James Worthy. Weeeee...

I guess you didn't do well on the SAT part where you read a paragraph and then did an analysis of it.
fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate
