Ive supported Isiah for 3 years but I can honestly say I'm really sick and tired of being the JERRY SPRINGER SHOW of the NBA.
Co-signed. There was a time not too long ago that people hated the Knicks b/c they were afraid to play us (ThugBall). Being hated is tolerable. Being laughed at is not.
BTW, 33 years means you saw the last NYK Championship squad, correct? If so, do you remember what that was like? I never really got a perspective from someone who was there to see it.
I remember both Knick championships. The first one with Dick Barnett as the SG; and the 2nd one with Earl Monroe at the SG spot.
That puts me at 47; but I'm still a young Knicks fan. The NBA has changed a lot from those days; but I still root for the Knicks to get another NBA crown....the closest one coming when Riley left Starks in the 4th too long (game 7) hoisting blanks from the 3pt arch (against the Rockets).
The championship Knicks played great ball together on both sides of the court; and they were respected for their play against their foes. Going into regular season games you'd expect the Knicks to come out winners; but when it came to the finals they weren't expected to win.
They had to go against tall odds and Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and Gail Goodrich. Also other big Laker contributers on those teams.
I vagely remember the playoffs leading up to both of the finals; but I do remember the year after the last championship when we were eliminated by the Washington Bullets after Bill Bradley missed a last second desperation jumper from the corner that would have either extended the series or pushed the Knicks into the next round.
I remember that particular shot (after the last championship); because in replays it looked like if Bradley would have done a "quick" jump pass to Clyde under the basket (instead of hoisting the shot); then the Knicks would have had a better chance of continuing on for a chance at ring number 3. Clyde seemed wide open, and looking up at the flight of the ball.
I remember the regular season battles between the Knicks and some of their rivals; but I vividly recall Clydes smoothness, and one time when he went up against Phil Cheneir and the Bullets. Chenier just went and threw a sucker punch at Clyde as whe was getting ready to pass the ball on offense.
Clyde had two hands on the ball and over top his head, and the game was played at MSG.
It was surprising; because it was never known that Clyde would ever do something to anyone (an opponent) to get them riled up to the point that they would want to fight him.
It was after that punch though, that Clyde showed me a big part of what he was about. A quiet; but giant assasin.
Clyde was having a so-so game up to that point; but it was early in the game. Instead of Fraizer electing to go right back at Chenier with a fist of his own...Clyde sought of showed displeasure from the punch (rubbing at his jaw); the game was temporarily halted by the refs to straighten the situation out, then Clyde came out and burned the Bullets and Chenier for 45 points. He looked unstoppable.....and mad.
Chenier had a look of fear in his eyes every time Clyde had the ball in his hands. That's one day were Chenier looked completely stupid, and you can tell he regretted waking Clyde up.
There were a lot of good memeories from those days with all the Knick starters and reserves. I do remember Cazzie Russell, Spenser Haywood, Phil Jackson, Mike Riordan, Dave Stalworth, Dean Meminger, Henry Bibby, Hawthorne Wingo, and more.
Of course the Knicks have had their ups and downs since those championship years, and there will be another one to come; but I'm not going to come down on this year's team.
You have to start from somewhere, and it takes a lot to win a title. There's no such thing as a team can't win with a certain player on it...it still takes a combination of players, skill, defense, coaching, healthiness, & luck to pull all the cards out.
There's not one player on the current roster that's not exempt from getting an NBA ring....it will take some more tuning, and bringing in bigger and more intensified stoppers on the defensive end. and some consistency from at least two regular starters whether that's Marbury, or someone else brought in down the road.
I'm not refering to this year that the Knicks can win a championship. I'm just stating that even though a lot of folks come down on these players and their coach, we may see some of these same players we complain about in a few years be a part of a resurgeance.
BTW...you can call me an old man if you want; but I'm still young at heart. have been blessed with the looks and body of a 30 year old. Still play b-ball in the parks on the weekends; and have a 28 year old girlfriend; while talking to two more that are 32 years of age.
Life is going good. Now if the Knicks can return to glory in this fast paced hip-hop style NBA; then I can relax and settle down and R.I.P.
