I concur that Houston's #20 doesn't deserve retiring. He wasn't a perennial all-star. He was a 1-tool player that made it to the NBA finals once. He didn't even stay healthy for that many seasons... I think a retired number isn't just for a "favorite player"... I think it is for the unforgettable player... Allan Who?ston? doesn't qualify...

If Allan's number is retired, I want Anthony Bonner's number retired too. He was a fav of mine. Oh yeah, how can I forget the X-man. Though he wasn't a "franchise" player, he thought he was. That has to count for something. Oakley, Starks, Mase and Spree numbers have to go before Houston's. Remember, Houston only played 1 month after Spree was traded.

WOW...stating facts "enyspree".....retired like a bitch...He couldnt play anymore and wouldve hurt the team by doing so case closed. And wouldnt you want 20 pts a game everey night instead of Spree's 15 that came from the ugliest sporatic shot. Spree was a thug, Allan had class, and yes, his shot was hid game..he was a shooting guard. I know Allan's number will probably not be retired, but some of you people still hate on him for no reason with bogus statements. People like "Ewing glass"..."didnt stay healthy for that many seasons"...do your HW, Allan only missed 7 games in his first 7 seasons with NY. Theres nothing wrong with statements like "Gunsnewing" made...I agree with what u sed in a nutshell.

"Allan had a career in NY worthy of having his number retired" - Jeff Van Gundy

Allan houston shouldnt have his number retired. he was a pretty good player, but he wasnt good enough to get his jersey retired. he wasnt a franchise player by any means. and its not like his jumpshot will forever be unrivaled. ray allen, are already better players, and better shooters than houston. you dont see them asking for their jersey to be retired.

Nobody asks for their number retired, especially while theyre playing genius..with the exception of Ray Allen, theres still no shot like Houstons....4th all time leading scorer behind Reed, who he wouldlve passed if healthy, 7th All time NBA 3 pointers made, 90% free throw shooter...lets not forget two 50 pt. games in the dismal season of 2003. That gave knick fans something to cheer about. Many good players are one-dimensional. But to start mentioning Bonner, Herb, and other random knicks as worthier, lets get real people.I'll put this post/argument to bed by saying, embrace the great knick moments in the recent past, because since those 50 pt. games, there havnt been many.

A nice looking jumper is not enough for a player to get his number retired. Spree (who some might want to call a thug) was more valuable to the Knicks than Houston was when they both were on the club together.

Spree was shifted out of position of SG to SF when initially Houston was tried at SF; but couldn't defend opposing SFs. Spree was counted on to score 15-18 a game while being a defensive stopper against the opponent's better offensive players.

Houston was pretty much one dimensional and he lost the ball on TOO many occassions when it came down to clutch moments (drove me crazy). Lots of Houston fans always talk about his pretty jumper. Big deal.

I don't hate Houston; but he is no more deserving of a retired jersey as is a Starks or Oakley (both of whom should be considered 1st before Houston...IF they were deserving).

Save the retired jersey's for the members of the team that lead us to our next championship or valuable decade run.

Nothing wrong with Jeffries wearing a #20 jersey, There's not many good numbers left for Knickerbockers to wear without them looking wierd (like #27, 46, 26...etc).

Just be happy you have memories of YOUR favorite player. Jeffries might one day retire that number with his defensive capabilities as opposed to someone who could just shoot jumpers (couldn't dribble & drive to the basket). ....a REAL hypothetical situation...let's say that the Knicks were able to win a title or two somewhere in this decade, and we were known for our defense, and Jared "stepped" up his game and had become known for being a staunch defensive performer. Yes Hypothetical; but don't diss a 6pt averager just because he doesn't score.

Basketball is not relied on people who can "just" score. Get a grip and enlighten your stance on the game of basketball. It takes all kinds to make a winner and there are some 6 pt averagers who can bring more to the table than some 20 pt averagers. .......just have to open your eyes.

Just Say No to retiring #20.

IMHO; not warranted at this point in the Knicks recent history.

I understand using this post to say that Allan does not deserve to have his number retired. I'm am one of the first to say that Bernard should have his number retired before we even discuss Allan. But to use this post to say the guy wasn't a very good player? It's the same people that were upset because they felt Allan was paid to much, or stole too much fame from Spree. It's so silly. He was a great player for us.
