Marcus William is a talent and they probably could have traded him. I just heard that the guy they got, Collins, was really liked by LB! LB had talked about him during the season and said that he was the best PG in college. So if IT knew he wanted Collins and was sure he could get him at 29 then why not pass on Williams. NY does not need 2 G's we all know that. Even 1 will be tough to get into the rotation.

hmmmm interesting. I remember LArry mentioning Collins

no idea and I could careless about what other teams do. Everyone who's watched Marcus play thought he was a lottery pick

why would you listen to stupid analysts when the GMs, scouts, and drafting teams of most clubs passed on him? Do you rate jay bilas over larry bird?

Alot of people knocked Lee last year too. I don't know either player but based on IT's track record, they may work out. If they get 1 of them to contribute this year, they have done well.

you still don't pass up on a top 10 talent not for a role player you could've had at 29

Forget about who we drafted for a moment. If M Williams is really a top ten talent, how come the 19 teams before the Knicks passed on him?

oohah

C'mon, that's not a fair response. THere certainly must have been some reason Williams was passed upon. Was it a mistake? I think so, as I would have taken Marcus with the #20 pick, but there has to be some reason why.

[Edited by - PresIke on 06-28-2006 11:17 PM]

The reason is ego. this is a second round player. yes he can have some moments in the SL, but when the real season starst and the guys get bigger stronger and faster a 6-6 205 guard will have a lot of trouble rebounding over tim duncan. this guy doesnt have NBA skills hes a worker but a guy like that should be a 2nd round pick who EARNS a paycheck not given a 20 slot. we couldve easily just sold our pick and bought a 2nd rounder.

this was a draft that centered on need but do we need 2 guards who cant shoot? whats wrong with ager? ager is 10 times the player this cat is.

I was refering to college basketball fans not guys like Steven A smith, greg anythony & dan patrick. Teams often overlook IO, leadership skills & fundamentals for combine results

BRIGGS I hear you on Isiah's ego thing regarding the drafting of Balkman at 20, and mostly think that there is some accuracy in that assessment, but why did all of those other teams pass on Williams, before and after the Knicks?

Because he stole a labtop?

OMG! I just realized the Knicks spent over $30 mil counting luxury tax on Jalen Rose to get this draft pick and select Renaldo!

The Knicks are more then a laughingstock. Balkman might be a decent player but you don't pick the guy at #20, you just don't do it. Isiah Thomas is a horrible GM and he needs to be fired immediately. I agree with you Briggs, this is getting harder and harder everyday as a Knick fan. NOTHING goes right, nothing has and I don't think anything will for a long while. The Knicks are stuck in reverse.

I rate Rod Thorn over almost every GM in the NBA. The guy drafts well every year and he chose Williams after everyone passed on him. The fact that Thorn drafted Williams tells me that there are no red-flags with him becuase if there were, Thorn wouldn't have drafted him.

this was a draft of need. it seemed to rule the day you can tell because the PGs came off the board in the 20s rondo lowry williams is our need a skinny sf with little skill who cant shoot? atleast we couldve take noel who has an NBA body and some skill level if we wanted an athlete who can defend. this kid EASILY couldve been pick 50 or WORSE its ego its why we are terrible this is why we are the only team to go after eddy curry and then bid against no one. there is nothing that i can see that has changed since kermit the frog got a job here. hes an arse kissing stooge who loves his name in the lights.

my sister is a USC alumni and the football band director, she knows balkman, says he is a good kid and a super athlete, smart kid and player, not a superstar but a guy you will win with on any team... with that said, how could we pass on marcus williams?

The nets draft williams and boone... what a draft for them!!!

The Nets had a good draft in Williams and Boone, you are right. They need a natural point guard to backup Kidd and Vaughn and they got that.

They needed a big defensive player and they got that too in Boone.

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

I won't crush Isiah on this one. I haven't seen enough of Williams to independently gauge what we missed out on. So I can't really rate him against either renaldo (to be honest, I thought we drafted a soccer player for a minute) or Mardy Collins.

Isiah has balls to make a move like this. Since it appears by all accounts that Rernaldo would have lasted till the 29th pick or later - this is a move that will be judged not only on how Renaldo fits - but how Williams compares to Collins and Renaldo in the future. Good luck Isiah. Lets hope Renaldo gets it done at some point.

I can't judge Balkman, but passing on Marcus Williams almost gave me a heart attack. This reminiscent of passing on Artest. Sometimes you just have to go BPA if something that good falls in your lap.

We could have drafted Marcus Williams and Alexander Johnson! Mardy Collins is a solid pick up who will help this team. This Balkman kid... I mean, couldn't we have bought a second round pick? or at worst bought Phoenix's 27th pick?

this felt like a panic draft for Isiah. I have a feeling it won't be the last panic moves we see...

Geez already guys!! Marcus Williams is a decent player but you all are acting like we passed on Magic Johnson!

Marcus Williams has several weaknesses: Defense, Shooting, and Character. That's right character. Everybody has been bitching about character and they want a guy who steals laptops while he is on his way to the NBA!!

M Williams is a slow, poor defense playing, poor shooting guard!

He has decent floor general skills, maybe he will be a good fit in New Jersey if he beats out Jacque Vaughn! They need a backup point, we do not!

Marcus Williams:

2003-2004 14.1 2.9 1.3 4.3 2.4 1.82 1.0 .1 1.8 .370 .692 .176 1.00
2004-2005 31.0 9.6 3.8 7.8 3.3 2.41 1.1 .3 1.7 .404 .719 .403 1.16
2005-2006 33.3 12.3 3.9 8.6 3.7 2.33 .9 .2 1.7 .407 .862 .400 1.39

Even without considering this draft whatsoever, I think we should relieve Isiah of his GM duties and simply retain him as coach. To prevent panic moves which will deplete our talent, mortgage our future and perhaps still leave us with a flawed roster. Again, I haven't evaluated these draft picks with my own eyes and I won't see them extensively until this season (if they play). So that remains a non-issue for me at this juncture. But Isiah is capable of being selfish and him keeping his job could come at a heavy price to us fans - lets safeguard our team from further destruction.

If you are talking about Williams, it not just about stats.

You've brought up character and defense quite a bit in this forum in the recent past haven't you? Well that's 2 strikes against M Williams.

He's not much of a shooter, strike 3. He's fat and in poor condition, strike 4?

Like I said before. M Williams is about the equivalent of Rick Brunson.

No offence NYK, but weren't you in the Harrington thread bitching about not getting guys who need the ball to be successful???? Seriously. Isiah Found Lee and Nate right, can we wait until the summer league before we say the guy who fell 15 spos for being overweight is greater then the guy who moved up in his work outs????
