Just managed to watch the England game. Recorded it, then watched it later without knowing the score.

What a cr@p game! Honestly, if we play like that, we have no chance of winning anything! Beckham's quality ball in the first 5 minutes was the difference, but Owen showed he's not ready fitness-wise, and has lpst some of his sharpness. Crouch was largely anonymous. The best player England-wise was Joe Cole, who showed some good skills, but the attacking instinct just wasnt there today. We desperately need Rooney back, he will change the England mentality completely. We looked solid at the back though, so I suppose thats one good thing, but what a booooring game.

Now, I've been reading some peoples posts about the Germany game, and I must intercede here. Germany played terribly. Yes, you cant complain about a 4-2 result, but their defense was absolutely shocking. Infantile. They will be found out, and soon. Costa Rica's defending was worse, and thats why Germany won. Costa Rica never defended the flanks, and the Germany wingers and full-backs had free rein. That lead to the first goal, and was a factor in the second and third as well. If you watch the game again, you will notice the high line the German defense was playing, hoping every time for the offside call. But good teams will time their runs, and the German's will not progree.

Equador beating Poland was the shock of the tournament so far. This was meant to be a straight-forward Germany-Poland group, but Poland will gain heart from the German defensive performance, and the Germans will do the same after the Poland result. Its looking very possible right now that Equador might qualify from that group. The winner of that group plays the second placed team in England's group and vice versa, so I will be keeping a close eye on them.

The Ivory Coast team are very dangerous, and should not be underestimated. They have a good chance of progressing, and on their day, they could get through to the quarter-finals.

Trinidad and Tobaga's draw against Sweden was couragous, brave and very impressive. Sadly, T&T are just not good enough to get through to the knockout stages, but if Sweden slip up against Paraguay, T&T will be looking to stun a few people.

Marv, Nate is fast quick and strong, but does he have the quickness to trouble defenses in soccer? It's hard to try and visualize people into different spots, but his speed and power could place him in good stead, but having the skill is a totally different story. And being able to jump high does not make you a good header of the bsll, as evidenced by 6"7 Peter Crouch, who can certainly get his head to it, but cant do much with it.

BTW, Nalod, Lazio are know throughout football for their fascist minority of fans and Paulo Di Canio has been criticised in every country in Europe for the picture of him you posted. As dosger pointed out, Lazio are an Italian team, and the Germans are very cautious about showing any nazi/fascism in football. Unfortunately racism in football in Italy is a known problem, and many players have spoken out against it. BTW, would you believe that Paaulo Di Canio actually won the Sportsman of the Year award in England a few years back. A croos came in, and the goalkeeper slapped it out underpressure from a attacker, and swallowed his tongue in the process. Asnhe was lying there choking Di Canio's team-mate, not noticing crossed the ball to Di Canio to tap it in with no 'keeper, and he caught the ball instead of scoring an easy goal.

So far, the World Cup is shaping into a facinating tournament, and if some unfancied teams like Trinidad or Equador can get into the knockout stages, it could get very interesting. Did anyone else notice how biased the referee in the England match was towards the South American team? God, we need Rooney bad. C'mon England!!!!

Highlight was Torsten Frings' 35 yard screamer with the ball bending half the width of the goal to beat the 'keeper.
firefly: Is the type of the ball they are using somehow different from what they used in the last few cups? I thought I heard them say Lehmann hated the ball. Why is that?

P.S: Germany looks real good. Even though CSC's goalie (Porras I think) totally sucked! Imagine them with Ballack!

Silver, they are using different balls this year. They are much, much lighter and move around significantly in the air. If you watch Fring's goal, he doesnt curl it, but the ball swerves literally half the width of the goal. Its a goalkeeper nightmare, but a clever idea by the organizing comitee to get more goals.

Well, I hope Spain does a good tournament, but I'm not very confident about my team. I'm tired of Raul... Let's hope Reyes gets a lot of playing time.
Good luck to England firefly ;) and to the USA team. I just want to see some good matches and lots of goals.
I still like soccer a lot, but I have been a a lot more into the NBA for a few years. Anyway F.C. Barcelona rules the world! Ha!

Darkknicks, Reyes plays for Arsenal in England, so I've seen a LOT of him, and let me tell you Reyes absolutely SUCKS! There is not a player in the world I have a lower regard for. His greatest achievement is his title of Europes most fouled player. Cr@p! You know why he has that title? because he goes down easier then anyone else in Europe. Bleeeech! No special pace, speed or anything. Reyes sucks.

Sorry for the rant, but I hate pansies like Reyes who don't play like men. Its a contact sport for gods sake!
Hahaha, ok, we have different opinions. Of course I know he plays for Arsenal now, but he was at Sevilla FC until Arsenal got him, so I know him very well too. It is true that he gets down easy, but in Spain and Italy that's the normal thing, it is just not him. He is certainly one of the most skilled players (if not the most) in Spain. Someone I really haven't seen enough (whoi plays in the Premier also) is Cesc.
BTW, who's you favourite English team? Arsenal, Chelsea, Machester, Liverpool?

Im sorry Dark, but I dont see any special skill in Reyes. Ive seen far better in even the worst teams in the Premiership. Im a Manchester United fan, and I have been since before they were any good. Reyes has never played well against us. Gary Neville has him in his pocket every game. Reyes just cant play a physical game. Why? Because he's a girlie.

don't you think the best soccer player could be . . .nate robinson??? i mean think about it - those legs, that power, that speed! that aggressiveness! that fearlessness!

nate should be whupping the whole world right now!!!
Me and guns were talking about this last night watching some old school footage from his fathers collection and trust me, Nate would be just another guy. I wonder if he could keep pace for 45 minutes. I really dont think he is fast enough and would get beat very often.

well i'll take you guys' words for it, but tell me why. the guy seems ridiculously fast on the basketball court, and i assume as a 5'9" defensive back he was all about speed on the footbell field. it wouldn't translate on a soccer field? he couldn't keep pace? he's not incredibly strong, as exhibited by those 14 straight misses in the slam dunk contest?

You have to remember Marv, that while speed and strength are a vital part of being a top soccer player, and endurance is an absolute must, skill and vision are far more important. Maradona was a fat short lump of lard with no special turn of pace, but he was one of the best players to ever play the game. Check out Ronaldinho, Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi or Thierry Henry on video.google.com or on myspace/youtube and you'll see what I mean.

This should be a good game. Lets see what van Nistelrooy can do. Two very good teams doing battle here.

Keep an eye out for van Nistelrooy's hold-up play with Robben/van Persie coming onto his flick-ons

It sure was man! They have an amazingly quick attack and their passes are really accurate. They have seriously dominated the ball so far. Looks like they got this game covered.

I have no problem with 1-0. I was enthralled by 0-0 yesterday!

GOOD GAME!! Serbia was awesome in the second half. They were aggresive and had a few good chances. Too bad it didnt work out. Would've been fun to see the Dutch respond to a 1-1 tie.

Mexico is GOOD! They are going to be a problem for whoever plays them in the round of 16.

Portugal already up 1-0 on Angola, off a terrific setup by one of my favorites, Figo.
