Melo's got the spin going to get the price up for Denver already. Smart man or smart agent
your probably right. He's also only borderline star material. I would he's better than Joe Johnson but is he a max player? Can Denver afford to make him one? They may have to because I would thing SOME team with cap space would offer it. Maybe the Cats.. who knows.

Maybe right now he's only boarderline star material, but in 3 years, I think he's going to be MUCH better. The kid just has some more growing up to do.

Yeah, he has a lot of maturing to do. I think he's a good kid who wants to win and I suspect he will mature. Will he be a Paul Pierce type player (maybe top 20 in the league) or a top 5 superstar? I suspect closer to top 20 (which is still an awesome player to have).

You think the Melo is going anywhere?
Melo said on SAS about 3 weeks ago he would love to play for NY and Larry Brown

It's amazing how if somebody quotes a person which contradicts something that you've said, that person is obviously lying or spinning or something of the sort. But when they say something that helps your argument, you use it as validation without questioning the veracity of the quote.

HHHHWHAT?!?!?!?

If he were our answer at the 3, we'd be contenders, for real. He is a ****ing BEAST this year. He plays well all over the court.

To get him I think there are a certain number of conditions that would need to be met.

1) Melo would want more money than Denver wants to pay. So if Melo likes Denver and they like him and they want to max him out... he stays in Denver... done deal.

But... if he wants more than they want to pay...

2) He rejects their offer, takes the qualifying offer for a year and then is an unrestricted FA. At that time, if he wanted to come here and we wanted to pay him what he wanted, and were under the cap by that amount (the amount of the first year of his contract, we could sign him outright.

3) It becomes clear Melo and Denver are done with each other and they will be parting ways when his contract is due for renewal, we could then offer denver a trade package worth the amount Melo wants but which denver finds more attractive for the price than Melo. in this case they sign and trade him to us.

I don't know where max contracts start nowadays, lets assume ~12M. Do we have a package making 12M worth more to denver than Melo?

Lets remember, expiring contracts are of little value to a team in this situation because if they just let the player walk they get more immediate cap relief than what we offer. It would only make sense if you offer them cap relief above and beyond that player, but denver isn't really saddled with burdensome contracts.

Since we wont be 12M under the cap, and since our expirings are of little value to denver, our only real hope of netting Melo would require that he and Denver are philosophically done with each other, terms of contract will not be met, and we have a better package of talent and picks to offer to Denver than any other party in the hunt. Then a sign and trade would be commenced.

Blue Seats.. I know its a stretch but you left out the Midlevel Exception. Yeah I know, Melo loses out on about 8 million dollars if he takes it, but it IS a option, albeit it's a 99.9% no chance one.

yeah, no chance. that sheed scenario was the only credible mle situation for a loong time.

melo is an ego guy, it's too early in his career for something like that. these will be his payday years, he's gonna be chasing big bucks, and the possibility that he will want the max and denver wont comply is really what our hopes need to hinge on.
