Always sad to see a player have to retire early. Unfortunately H20 will be remembered more for his contract than the '99 playoffs, but he was a very good player for us when healthy. Thanks Allan.

Why anyone should be celebrating this is beyond me--we need to get another shooter on our roster. All the best to Allan.

as great as his game 5 floater in the lane was against the Heat, my favorite Houston moment was when he torched Reggie Miller time and time again down the floor in the 4th qtr of game 5 which would give the Knicks a 3-2 lead en route to winning game 6 at the Garden. For all times Reggie killed us seeing Houston call for the ball and just drill shot after shot in Reggie's face

man i hear ya. i loved the part of allan's game that he really developed - facing up on his man, then doing a little subtle dance of stab - stab - little shoulder deke - watching his guy for the slightest sign he was ging for it - then finding it, elevating and drilling that line drive jumper. man that was a thing of beauty, a fallen art in the league.

was better than sex.

was what?? was what???

guys, we're having a little talk with fishy on opening night!

No, Dolan agreed to donate his heart to Eddy in order to complete the deal.

Very sad moment for the Knicks and their fans. Allan Houston has been a guy I've looked up to since 9th grade, and he truely has been a class act as well as one of a kind on and off the court. My favorite Houston moment was game 6, 1999 against Indiana when he absolutely destroyed the Pacers. I also remember the Miami game so well, when I was driving with my dad through Harlem and he said that Larry Johnson was going to take the final shot (Listening to the game on the radio) and I said I thought it would be Houston. Then when Gus Johnson shouts "OFF THE FRONT RIM AND IN with 8 tendths of a second to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I screamed as loud as anyone possibly could.

People look at the Knicks and say "Allan Houston, biggest reason for the franchise woes" well, he also was a big playoff performer and is a big reason the Knicks advanced from 1997- 2000. And as Fishmike said, while the Knicks were brutal to watch the past few years, he at least gave the true bball fans something to look foward to if you turned on the game for the first couple of years they were bad. He was almost the sole reason that the team overachieved so much more than it should have, in that 2002-2003 season. Maybe if Chaney and Layden didn't drive him into the ground when it was clear he needed some rest, then we'd still have a somewhat healthy pure shooter you can rely on consistently.

People say he never tried, but the way I see it, besides in the rebounding department and driving the ball to the hoop enough, he played to the best of his capabilities. Never got enough credit for being a team player and being a leader both on and off the court. This is one poster, however, that did recognize all of that.

If Allan Houston shall never cross paths with the great Allanfan20, thus, never giving me a chance to say thank you in person, I say Thank you to Allan right here, in hopes he'll someday read it. I wish you the best of luck with everything in the future.

Man this is a sad day. Houston was the one of the only bright spots on the knicks for that really bad stretch. Best of luck

HOuston will be more useful sitting on that Knick bench. This guy should be coaching these guys about shooting. Take the rest of the year off there Allan and enjoy your family but I expect to see you back on the bench next season as a coach.

OK everyone.

Yes Houston was great in his short prime. Yes he hit one of the best shots in Knicks history. Yes he was and is a great person, but lets get down to what really matters here.

WILL HIS SALARY COME OFF THE CAP (ATLEAST PARTIALLY)???

does anyone know?

Don't know if this is up to date but it doesn't look good for getting an exception.

http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#51

Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player has retired. For example, James Worthy retired in 1994, two years before his contract ended. He continued to receive his salary for the 94-95 and 95-96 seasons, so his salary was included in the Lakers' team salary in those seasons. It is at the team's discretion (or as the result of an agreement between the team and player) whether to continue to pay the player after he has retired.

There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary. This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing. There is a waiting period of two years (if the injury or illness occurred between January 1 and July 1) or until the second July 1 following the injury or illness (if it occurred between July 1 and January 1) before a team can apply for this salary cap relief. If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date prior to the last day of the regular season), then his entire salary for that season is removed from the team's team salary. For example, Luc Longley suffered a career-ending injury in March 2001. In March 2003, the Knicks were allowed to remove his entire 02-03 salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team salary as of the last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoid paying any tax on Longley's salary). There is also some luxury tax relief associated with disabled players -- see question number 15 .

If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player.
