I’ve long said that both just need a solid PG to blossom.
I am pretty low on Barrett and Randle right now. Mostly because their usages are high and their efficiency are low. Their willingness to defend keeps them in my conversation. Conversely, Fournier’s efficiency is high but his defense is suspect. Kind of wish there was a simple fix. I don’t think putting Fournier next to Brunson on defense is a great idea.
Otherwise, I like that the youths may get more minutes. I think they should consolidate a little somewhere amongst the guards.
Kind of want to see Cam get some run.
But mostly, I don’t want to hamstring the Knicks in wheeling and dealing. They have been adding good value and want to keep giving them the chance to do so.
See….I would lean one way. Then I read a post like this and I’m back the other way.
Knicks and this FO has given us a healthy system of picks, yoots while competitive enough to make the playin. We are on the best position we’ve ever been in from what I remember with our balance of vets and yoots and picks and flexibility.
Do McBride, Reddish, and Sims need or deserve any court time?
As is, a projected rotation of:
Brunson Rose
Fournier IQ
Barrett Grimes
Randle Toppin
Robinson Hartenstein
already skimps on minutes for a lot of those guys. If all the starters average 32 minutes, the bench guys only get 16. Of course there will be injuries and missed games but as is a trade where we turn 3 of those ten into D Mitchell makes sense. Thing is, there's not really much pressure for the Knicks because they comfortably control everyone's contracts for the next two seasons. There's also not a huge downside to doing that. The Knicks can use the first half of the season to see what they have. If Brunson, Barrett, Randle are playing 36 minutes and Rose is playing 25, someone else won't be getting much court time and could be a trade candidate.
McBride is a development project. His defense should have him in discussions for court time anywhere. I don't love anyone with a midrange game mostly because I think midrange is just inefficient. I think Kerr has the right of this eFG analysis. So, his offense needs work and he needs to continue to get stronger, but I really have him in the Marcus Smart category of players and would love to hold on for that reason. Whether he needs immediate time or not is questionable now that he has Brunson and Rose to practice against.
Reddish is an enigma. He has the physical tools to be a fantastic defensive wing and showed elements of that in ATL in his early seasons. Injury has kept him off the court and lost his spot in the rotation. He needs a strong training camp to break into Thib's rotation and I am not sure whether he is working in the offseason. I have no knowledge of it. His 3pt isn't that sharp. I'd probably err on the side of giving him minutes and see what shakes out. For me, 22-23 is a good season to take risks and see what's available in the draft. If we ball out and make the playoffs, great. If we hit the lottery cause our inefficient shooters are still inefficient shooters, well, I hope then we are really really bad and not just middling.
Sims is a perfect guy to be third in the rotation. Maybe Hart sees time at the PF and Sims get some minutes as backup. He is developing and I am glad he got his contract he should see sporadic minutes while most of his work is done with the coaches.
