I wish he hadn't retired. I'm one of his biggest fans. Obviously it was a decision he gave a lot of thought too though.

Phil Coke coming in here. I don't like it. At all. It doesn't feel good.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

How many Sunday mornings do you think Jimmy Dolan said the same thing?

damn shame, we wasted a fine performance outta Andy P tonight & a clutch HR by Swish to tie it up in the 9th... i thought Joe G shoulda stuck w/Phil Hughes in that spot rather than put in Phil Coke, but Coke did get the first man he faced to make an out... ah well, can't win em all.

Yeah right? What a shame. I would've stuck with Hughes right there as well but Joe actually wound up getting the matchups he wanted - Coke's gotta get the light-hitting Wise right there and he didn't. Simple as that. What are ya gonna do? Got go get 'em tomorrow. Hopefully Mitre keeps us in the game.... Swisher's homer was awesome though. I mean that dude Thorton just throws gas. Swish is a decent overall player offensively but just an absolute beast righthanded. Much better swing righthanded than left. Every so often a switch-hitter comes along where you look at him and say to yourself, man, he should just abandon the switch-hitting and go exclusively with his best side. For me Swish is one of those guys. Obviously it'll never happen as he's still decent enough lefthanded and that's where the bulk of his at-bats come from. Just blogging...

Read today in Newsday that the Yanks might have some interest in the Jays' Scott Downs and Jason Frasor. I know both guys are having decent years statistically but I don't know man. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see either of these guys as difference makers... Obviously Ace's health plays a big factor here - Aceves is apparently suffering from a tired arm but did manage to throw a good bullpen session today where he said his fastball was jumping out of his hand and he felt fine afterward. If Ace isn't right though then maybe you get one or both of these guys to add some bullpen depth. But at what cost? I wouldn't give Toronto anything major for either guy. I don't know man. If that's all that's available, I might just sit tight and go with what we have. If the price is right, I guess adding Downs and/or Frasor couldn't hurt but in a big spot, would either guy really scare you? Would Downs and Frasor be that much of an upgrade over Coke, Marte when he returns and Aceves??? Article also said Boston, in addition to their on-going discussions with teams like Cleveland and San Diego for guys like Victor Martinez and Adrian Gonzalez, may have some interest in Marco Scutaro as an upgrade over Nick Green at short....

So apparently the Red Sox got Victor Martinez for basically nothing. Not good at all. They are 8-0 against us this year and now got stronger. We need to make a move to bolster the pitching staff.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

i've actually been very high on Scott Downs, i'm surprised if TOR would deal him to us... he's a power lefty that throws gas & has proven ability to get guys out in big spots, not many of those around... & Jason Frasor is having a terrific season in his own right... those 2 guys would really help reduce the amount of innings that Coke & Aceves are gonna throw this year... last thing i wanna do is wear out those guys' arms before the playoffs, something that's happened several times in the past w/guys like Quantrill, Sturtz & Proctor when Joe Torre was managing... if we can get those guys w/o having to give up our top 2 prospects Jax & Montero & not have to give up Cervelli, Melky or Gardner, then i'm all for it... i'd be willing to give them Pena if i had to get the deal done, u can find defensive middle IFers in the minors.

The Yankees acquired Jerry Hairston Jr. from the Reds, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Mitre is pitching bad tonight, but maaaaaaaan, I like that Hinske. That was a huge home run, even though it's early in the game.

With Joba Chamberlain heading toward his innings limit - believed to be approximately 160 - the Yankees could need another starter late in the season or in October, making the depth of the rotation more important than ever.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2009/07/31/2009-07-31_yankees_traded_minorleague_catcher.html?page=1#ixzz0MuK6ckOA

joba is at 110 right now, and obviously pitching better and deeper into games. he has another 8-10 starts left, if they roll into the playoffs are tehy really going to bench this guy? if they do, what is plan B? Pettitte as 3rd starter, mitre as 4th???? aceves? what is going on here? do they bring hughes out of the pen, i thought i read girardi didnt want do to that.

what is the plan. hopefully AJ can turn it around tomorrow

I wonder how much longer he has to do this for before they start using him more than once a week!

He did strike out 2 or 3 times also though. He should play maybe 2 or 3 times a week, but nothing more than that. He's good for a home run.
