you're right... and I wasn't too keen on the Tex signing because the Angels didn't get any better with him. He's clearly a cornerstone

I agree this is the most confident I have been in a Yankee team in several years. Mostly because I think this lineup top to bottom can explode at any time, and because we finally have at least 2-3 pitchers in the bullpen that can shut down the game. The bullpen in the first month or so was a disaster but since then it has been a revelation.

would you say they are the best bullpen in baseball

that's a cue for bonn to intercede with small sample scale mumbo jumbo...
The bullpen that you called the best one (Melancon, Veras, Bruney, Coke, Ramirez, and Rivera) was a poor bullpen. This bullpen now with Aceves and Hughes is a good one. What they did was hardly ingenious. You move your starting pitchers to the bullpen and you'll end up with a great bullpen and a damaged starting rotation.

Eric Hinske - 4 HR's in 13 AB's w/a 1.512 OPS as a Yankee... obviously not gonna keep up this pace but i think it's fair to say he's been a great acquisition.

See I don't know how to feel about this team... they're very, very talented. They keep winning like they won last night. They got two legitimate aces. The lineup is stacked. I'm happy with the corner defense, Jeter's range stinks but you know he won't botch the big play, and him and Cano are more than competent turning the DP... the lineup is so awesome there's no need to explain.

But they're going to play the Angels/Red Sox this postseason...

Now with Hughes being in the bullpen having the saem affect as Joba, they are a good bullpen. This was necessary and why I felt Joba should have been in the pen to begin with. If its Hughes fine, as long as it's one of the two, although I think Hughes is going to be the better SP longterm.

they've been owned by the Angels & Sox but CLE proved to us a couple years ago that dominating during the regular season doesn't necessarily mean the same domination will happen in the postseason... i think we beat them in all but 1 game that year but they ended up taking the series from us in the playoffs.

Time for him to start playing more and Swisher less, and see what happens. Still use Swisher periodically, though. He's good and we don't want him to get rusty.

I don't worry too much about small samples in the regular season. The Yankees and Red Sox look like even teams to me. I'd give each team a 50/50 chance in a best of 7 series. If we were to acquire Halladay without giving up a crucial pitcher, that would change everything though. I think we'd be big time favorites.

Why is Hinske not playing? He's hitting a lot better than Swisher (both recently and for overall season numbers). Heck, he's not even playing ahead of Cody Ransom!?!?

He's a bat off the bench. That's it. He's not a starter.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Listen I like Hinske, but he's not a guy you play everyday. He's the kind of guy that you get 350ab's a year and he's going to give you solid numbers but when he starts getting up past that number and playing everyday his warts begin to show.

He's good playing 2-3 times a week and pinch-hitting.

absolutely agree, he's not a fulltime starter... the numbers he's putting up are great but give him daily AB's & he gets exposed just like any other bench player... he could be starting on a team like the Nationals or Orioles, but not on this team... still, he's been a great acquisition, we needed a bat like his off the bench in the worst way.

I'm not sure what makes him any less of an everyday player than Swisher or Melky. Look at his career #s, especially OPS. They're as good as the average everyday player and I think he can really thrive at Yankee Stadium. 350 ABs is really all I had in mind though anyway. The Yankees have given him only 15 at bats in 16 games, though--not even one at bat per game.

I definitely agree that Hinske isn't an everyday guy, but as Bonn brought up a few posts back, how did he not get the start over Cody ****ing Ransom? Granted, Ransom had a good game today, but didn't we trade for Hinske to give A-Rod a rest every so often?

I appreciate that Hinske can play outfield, but I'd much rather see Gardner as the 4th outfielder, and keep Hinske in the infield.

Anyways, back to 1st place.

Well my guess is that Ransom needed the playing time to keep him sharp - the last time he played was July 10. He needed to play.

I know he had one good game but why do we care what a guy hitting .188 needs? Are we worried that if he's not sharp, he'll drop below .100?
