Looks like the Yankees might pursue Joe Mauer too... which would be awesome.

I would love that but the Sox have an absolute hard-on for him. I think they might outbid anything we offer.

Matsui would probably be the odd man out of the lineup then. I'd be fine with that though. Mauer can be a VERY good player for many more years. It would be bad to let Boston end up with him.

I'd pay a lot for him... he's got the best swing in the bigs and that usually is a good sign for longevity

i don't see how we can reasonably get Joe Mauer w/o trading away someone like Cano or Joba, or both.

I'd definitely trade Cano for him but Cano PLUS Joba is too much. I'd give Cano plus Melky OR Gardner plus any pitching prospect other than Hughes or Joba. That's the most I'd give, though.

You'd probably have to do something like Montero+ Jackson + Joba or Hughes

I wouldn't give up a very good pitching prospect like Hughes or Joba for a position player. Trading them for a Cy Young pitcher in his prime is another story. I'd rather just sign the best available FA catcher after Jorge retires.

Montero, Jackson & Hughes for Mauer? Hmmm... i think i might have to make that deal to be honest on a pure value basis, but then what do u do w/Jorge? u can't play him at 1B, he'd be a fulltime DH in that case... that means you also have to find a place to trade Matsui & possibly Damon next year.

I would not trade Jackson for anyone at this point? If he's as good as people say, then we need to keep him and see what he's got at the major league level.

If Minnesota gives up Mauer after giving up on Santana for free, they might as well pack it up and cease to exist.

wow bro... Joe Mauer's the best C in the game & he's in his prime at 26... we're talking probably future HOFer if he continues to produce the way he has... how do u say no to a guy like that to keep Austin Jackson? he may be good, he may be great... on the other hand, he may not... u know what u'r getting in Mauer... i doubt the Twins would even take that package to tell u the truth & again, what do the Yankees do about the Jorge situation if Mauer comes here? but i'd give up 5 Austin Jackson's to get 1 Joe Mauer if i had to... u just can't find players like that.

Definitely agree with TMS here. There's no one I'd rather have behind the plate than Mauer, and he's still got 4 years until 30.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I haven't seen Jackson myself. While he does sound good, the thought of passing on Santana because we refused to give up Hughes and Kennedy is still fresh in my mind (and yes, I am ashamed to admit I was in that camp).

I think ultimately the Twins will extend Mauer and he'll never hit FA.

Yankees got Hinske... great pickup by Cashman, he was invaluable off the bench for the Rays last year.

Yankees Acquire Eric Hinske
30th June, 2009 - 11:36 am
Press Release - The New York Yankees today acquired infielder/outfielder Eric Hinske from the Pittsburgh Pirates along with cash considerations in exchange for minor leaguer right-handed pitcher Casey Erickson and minor league outfielder Eric Fryer.

Hinske, 31, appeared in 54 games with the Pirates this season, batting .255 (27-for-106) with 18 runs, 9 doubles, 1 home run and 11RBI. He has played 13 games in right field, six games at first base and three games at third base, and has made 29 pinch-hit appearances, going 8-for-24 (.333) with 5 walks. Hinske was the Opening Day right fielder for the 2008 American League champion Tampa Bay Rays, batting .247 (94-for-381) with 21 doubles, 20 home runs and 60 RBI, making 47 starts in right field, 37 in left field, nine at first base and four at third base. He was also a member of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox in 2007.

he'll be a solid veteran bat off the bench for us in a pinch hitting role... we needed someone to fill that role.

He kinda sucks, but he basically replaces Ransom who you couldn't get any worse than. Should've picked up Hinske back when ARod was out.
