Care for another update? Melky missed a homerun by a foot - but 13-0 Yanks!

Of course A-Rod nearly grounds into a triple play.

That's what happens when you live and die by the home run... outside of Jeter, Cano, and Posada (and maybe Melky for his year) I would bet against everyone else being able to punch an opposite field single with 2 outs, RISP. This offense has a lot of individual stars but no lineup concepts. The dynasty Yankees had amazing balance...

1 Boggs/Knoblauch/Soriano
2 Jeter
3 O'Neill
4 Williams
5 Martinez
6 DH/Posada
7 Brosius
8 singles hitter
9 potential leadoff hitter

or

1 get on base
2 get on base
3 hit in any situation
4 hit in any situation
5 hit and run/hit for power
6 hit and run/hit for power
7 hit and run/hit for power
8 singles hitter
9 get on base

now it looks more like

1 get on base/hit for power
2 get on base/hit for power
3 get on base/hit for power
4 get on base/hit for power
5 get on base/hit for power
6 get on base/hit for power
7 get on base/hit for power
8 get on base/hit for power
9 get on base/hit for power

Now that I brought it up I would also like to pay homage to my favorite player in any sport: Paul O'Neill

This Yankees team isn't just a bunch of sluggers. The team is 5th out 30 teams in on-base % and 9th in stolen bases (3rd in stolen base %). I'd go more with the 2nd team in your comparison. I want players with as high an on base % and as high a slugging % as possible at every lineup spot. It's baseball offense--you're still going to have inconsistency if you look at small samples.

Its a long season. Ultimately the best way to beat good pitching is to wear them down, see a lot of pitches and keep the line moving. The Yankees lineup, as currently constructed, will be the best offense in baseball this year. I'm pretty confident about that. As great as our lineups in the past 15 years or so have been, I don't think any of those teams had a 3-4 combination that could touch Teixiera/ARod. I am SO looking forward to watching this duo tear up baseball for the next several years.

they only hit 2 HR's today which accounted for 4 of the 15 runs... today they got most of their runs by manufacturing innings & getting hits w/runners on base... i agree it's dangerous to live & die by the HR but this year's team hasn't really been doing that... it's just that they've been so inconsistent w/their offense overall.

If I'm not mistaken the Yankees only have 1 regular in the lineup with a sub .800 OPS and that guy's got about a .770 OPS. They actually lead all of major league baseball in OPS.

On-base plus slugging (OPS) is a baseball statistic calculated as the sum of a player's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.[1] The abilities of a player both to get on base and to hit for power, two important hitting skills, are represented, making it an effective way of measuring the player's offensive worth. An OPS of .900 or higher in Major League Baseball puts the player in the upper echelon of offensive ability. Typically, the league leader in OPS will score near, and not necessarily below, the 1.000 mark.

This is OPS.

Yanks reportedly are among the teams seriously interested in signing Miguel Sano, a 16 yo Dominican phenom SS who draws comparisons w/Hanley Ramirez

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-sp.osnotes14jun14,0,4323362.story

if this kid is really as good as advertised the Yanks need to do whatever it takes to sign him... money should be no object if he's gonna be another Hanley Ramirez type prospect.

Melky's at .788 now and is our lowest every day player. I don't think any other team's lowest OPS player is anywhere near .800. Then our TENTH best hitter (Gardner) is in the mid .700s and can steal a lot of bases. This is just an amazing offense. It's the best offense you could ever ask for. The pitching looks better than it did in April but is still our weak point. I don't know who's available but we could easily afford to trade either Melky or Gardner for a good pitcher. I'd still be willing to trade Cano for a #2 starter too. Cano's got some impressive strengths but I'm not a fan of guys who don't draw walks and he really hasn't shown any improvement in his game over his 5 year career. I wouldn't just give him away by any means obviously though.
