The funny part is that we have gotten worse and teh boards and on d even though we know have a good center who can rebound and defend. Last year we had no center but at least did a better job than this year

We've seen the team defend better than this and we know that eventually they'll start to click on offense. I'm not gonna panic and get all crazy cuz the team is shaky early in the season. It's just silly to overreact to the 1st 6 games!

Nixluva you remind me of my wife when we are watching the games together. I am shouting how bad the Knicks are and she is always saying don't worry they will get better. Well after 36 years I keep saying when? Especially these last 10 years or so.
This team the way it is built will never out play a young athletic team. And every team in the NBA never have a problem getting up for the Knicks.

They have guys that are better defensively than STAT and Melo and Fields. 3 of our starters aren't world class defensive players. I'm not even expecting this team to be a great defensive team, but I do expect them to be good. They can and will improve on defense, but lets not bring up the best defensive teams in the league and compare them to the Knicks.

LOL dude so MDA is the unluckiest coach in the world he has had the worst luck in having a team with horrible defenders throught out his career. That's exactly what it is. MDA I'm sorry you poor b@stard you have had worst luck. You always have a team with poor defenders. Seriously dude in all MDA years when he has put out a good defense??? MDA as always been known as not coaching defense!!! it's not like he came to the knicks and all of a sudden they crowned him as coach that does not coach or have put out a good defense. Dude before he got he that's always been the ragged on him about his D and that's why he was sent packing from PHX.

Then u think of the old Knicks and they didn't have the best athletes but played great d. We have better athletes then that squad. Watch the games and you'll see it's his defensive philosophy. Everyone knows switching on defense should be a last resort. It just causes too much chaos. Leads to our poor rebounding also. U have guards trying to box out centers and power forwards.

Any coach would have switched Tyson Chandler on diaw in first quarter as soon as he hit his first 2 shots. Or went zone early to disrupt their flow. Or played shump with fields more since Henderson was shooting right over td so many times on switches.

+1 and Tyson just said in the post game the Knicks are out there improvising on defense. This whole team is a mess defensively highlighted by Amare who by the way learned how to play D from MDA

Exactly how the hell do you expect to get rebounds and second chance when Amare and tyson always find their selfs guarding a point guard or 2guard. Of course they are improvising on D. It looks like they are. Anyone who knows good defense will see that. Half of the people here who claim that it's not the coaching needs to go watch how defense gets play because it's clearly the coaching. How is chandler supposed to secure boards when he is at the 3 pt line guarding DJ? How many did we see that tonight? The old knicks from the 90's weren't even half as athletic as this team is. Bad coaching on D. Their should be no reason why we should be improvising on D. It just proves how badly prepared the players are and that is all on the coaching. No excuse. I'm tired of you MDA fan boys saying it's the players. Mike D has never had a good D. In phx they played the same game. Go back and watch their games. The team gets lost on screens and pick and rolls just like this team does. Easy baskets. Wake up.

Points allowed by MDA team with him as head coach...

Phx- 2003 = ranked 26 on defense points allowed.
phx -2004 = last in points allowed.
phx - 2005 28th in pts allowed.
phx 2006 = 23th in pts allowed.
phx 2007 = 25in pts allowed.

NY -2008 = 28th in pts allowed.
NY 2009 = 28th in pts allowed.
ny 2010 = 28th in pts allowed.

Should I pull up opp FG % allowed?

Defensive coaches like Mike Brown, Tom Thibodeau, and Erik Spoelstra when they become head coaches they after their first year head coach make their teams top 10 defenses. Go check on espn. Guess where The lakers are right now under Mike Brown top 10. These are the type of coaches that get their players to buy into a system and make their players better defensive players. Team Defense.

Great Post.

Then a lot of defense is off ball resistance. There is no struggle for other players off the ball. Pushing players higher for screens. Making other players pay for multiple screens. Little things you can do to make opponents think twice. There is just no resistance. Jumping at a players shooting hand to make them uncomfortable when ever they shoot. A defensive minded coach teaches little things like this. I'm 100% sure Dantoni does non of this. Everything opponents do is in rhythm.

We don't need to be a top 10 defense to win a championship. I think the mavs proved that. We need a coach that can get this team to play better team D and make the other team take more difficult and contested shots. I'm tired of seeing this team allowing players to get wide open looks and easy lays. Give me a coach that can get this team to play Team defense. I watch the way other teams switch and play team D and I know we can get these guys to play better team D.

They should only practice Defense for the rest of the season. STAT was a joke last night. You would think after Mullens hit his first 5 shots, that he would put a hand in his face...but no.

STAT if you read this, start playing some D, please?

to be fair, diaw used to be amar'e's teammate. so he probably knows exactly which parts of defense amar'e is most horrible at.

Poor argument....Amare has to make the proper adjustments
to his game (like Diaw did!) to compensate for that.
Unfortunately, Amare is clueless more often than not.

I wish that we had a power forward in the mold of Charles Oakley or even Brandon Bass.
I am very impressed with how he's fit in seamlessly with the Celtics in a
much shorter time....of course he's surrounded by superior talent that actually plays defense
as a unit and has an offense that finds the open man and cutters.
We are in big trouble, guys....and it's gonna get much worse before it gets better.

nixluva wrote:PATIENCE!!! It's the 6th game of the season. This team is going to get better. I know it's frustrating, but you have to keep things in perspective.

PLEASE....enough already....put your cool aid down and take your rose colored Knick/D'Antoni glasses off and wake up (ZZZZZZZZZ) to the reality that this group as constructed and coached is simply not that good.

Dolan's got the fannies in the seats and the tickets are sold, BUT the product
is TOTALLY unacceptable.
First solution: D'Antoni has to go. Bring in somebody who actually knows how to put a winning product and system on the floor.
Second solution: Start Shump at PG and live with the results.
Third solution: Package Fields and TD for a better SG.
Fourth solution: Look to move Amare in the off season and eat some of the contract if necessary. Melo/Amare on the floor will NEVER work at the same time. But, Melo/Chandler/Shump clicks. We just need to find different pieces to complement them.

We are going to be in a battle to even MAKE the playoffs if this situation remains unchanged.
It's quite obvious to the astute basketball observer that Miami, Chicago, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta, Indiana and even Philly are all better than us right now. Hello 8th seed.
