Let Nady walk. Let Matsui walk. Maybe see if you can get Damon back for another year. Do not let Cervelli just walk. That's bad beeswacks.
i would trade Nady this year for prospects if i can... i'd probably wanna hold onto Matsui just in case, we can always use his bat even if he's not hitting nearly like he used to hit... we've all seen how streaky he can get... Nady's contract is more easily tradeable & he can still play a little defense, albeit not all that great... Melky & Gardy have been doing a fine job filling in whenever needed, & Damon should be relegated to DH duty next season... i'd probably let Matsui walk then & get whatever compensatory draft picks i can get from the team that signs him.
Matsui is a free agent. How is it possible to get compensatory draft picks if he walks??
because that's how u get compensatory picks... your free agents sign w/other teams & those teams give back compensatory picks... that's how we got Joba & Hughes, when Tom Gordon & Andy Pettitte walked via free agency to the Phillies & Astros respectively.
So did we get anything back when Giambi and Abraeu walked and did we have to give up anything for CC, Tex and AJ? When does that apply?
i forgot to include that we need to offer Matsui arbitration & he needs to turn it down in order to qualify for compensatory picks... so say he wants to sign someplace else for a longterm deal & refuses arbitration, then whoever signs him owes us compensatory picks depending on where Matsui ranks on the list of DH's in MLB... if he's a type A free agent, meaning he ranks in the top 20% of players in his position, then we get 2 compensatory picks including the very first pick the signing team owns along w/a sandwich pick in between the 1st & 2nd rounds of the draft, unless that 1st pick is a top 15 pick, in which case we would get that team's 2nd round pick instead.
there's a stipulation that provided for the Yankees to sign CC & Teix, who were both Class A free agents, but they only lose the 2 compensatory picks w/the higher ranking player's team getting the 1st pick... so basically the Angels get our 1st round pick next year & the Brewers get the sandwich pick, which pretty much screwed the Brewers cuz had we not signed Teix they would have gotten both our picks.
i believe we didn't get any compensatory picks for Abreu because we didn't offer him arbitration... same goes for Giambi... i believe we did offer Mussina arbitration tho, so had he decided not to retire & signed w/another team, we would have been rewarded 2 compensatory picks from the team that signed him... hope that wasn't too confusing.

No, you said it well. Thanks for explaining. I really didn't know that you get picks like that. Is it like this in football and hockey as well?
Yeah, it's a confusing system but we did lose picks for CC, Tex, and Abreu but did not get anything for Giambi or Abreu. It was a controversial decision but Cashman didn't want to risk that Abreu or Giambi would ask the arbitration offer.
