I think you're underrating pitching, DJ, assuming the goal is to go deep in the playoffs and win WSs.

If we're talking long-term, then

Johan
CC
F-Rod (huge steal by the Mets)
Pujols
David Wright

If you're talking about winning right now (rather than long-term), Roy Halladay has to be on th elist. You could take anyone other than Johan off and replace them with Halladay in that case.

btw, is nick swisher the worst everyday player in the AL (non catcher)?

not as bad as Nady... i mean come on, dude's putting up a .739 OPS as a corner OFer & he can't run, field or throw all that well either... the only thing he does better than Swish is hit for a better average, but Swish sees way more pitches, gets on base at a higher clip, hits for more power, drives in more runs & is a switch hitter... plus he's got better range in the OF than Nady... i seriously don't see this fascination some of u guys have w/Nady... to me he's a super sub player at best.

Let Nady walk. Let Matsui walk. Maybe see if you can get Damon back for another year. Do not let Cervelli just walk. That's bad beeswacks.

i would trade Nady this year for prospects if i can... i'd probably wanna hold onto Matsui just in case, we can always use his bat even if he's not hitting nearly like he used to hit... we've all seen how streaky he can get... Nady's contract is more easily tradeable & he can still play a little defense, albeit not all that great... Melky & Gardy have been doing a fine job filling in whenever needed, & Damon should be relegated to DH duty next season... i'd probably let Matsui walk then & get whatever compensatory draft picks i can get from the team that signs him.

quick question:

who would be the top 5 players you would start a baseball team with?

[Edited by - djsunyc on 05-20-2009 1:48 PM]

if i'm looking longterm:

1 - Hanley Ramirez
2 - Evan Longoria
3 - Zach Greinke
4 - Adam Jones
5 - Chad Billingsley

Matsui is a free agent. How is it possible to get compensatory draft picks if he walks??

if i were starting a team, i would go with the following (and it's a tough question to answer):

- joe mauer
- longoria
- lincecum (although i'm very weary of NL west pitchers)
- hanley
- markakis (for offense and defense)

because that's how u get compensatory picks... your free agents sign w/other teams & those teams give back compensatory picks... that's how we got Joba & Hughes, when Tom Gordon & Andy Pettitte walked via free agency to the Phillies & Astros respectively.

No one other than me would take a closer? Who in the past 14 years has been more valuable to the Yankees than Mariano?

Swish only seems to be struggling at YS... on the road he's hitting .315 & has all of his 8 HR's (until today that is)... seems to me he's pressing at home a little & relaxes more on the road... maybe tonight's HR will help him to loosen up a little... there's no way u can replace this guy in the lineup w/Nady.

The .739 OPS is in 7 games played. Career-wise Nady and Swisher have very similar OPSs.

Mauer's a good choice, can't believe i forgot about him... but i'm having a hard time figuring out who to replace him w/in my lineup... i guess Billingsley would be the guy, but pitching wins championships so that's a tough one to call.

pretty good performance outta Hughes tonight... gave up some longballs but he pitched to the lead & at least he didn't walk many guys... 9 K's over 5 is encouraging to say the least... still needs to give this team more length but it's an improvement over his previous couple outings

Hughes is battling. He had much better command tonight. I think we gotta keep him up here and let him battle through it.

I wanna see ARod keep his HR streak alive...

So did we get anything back when Giambi and Abraeu walked and did we have to give up anything for CC, Tex and AJ? When does that apply?

I'd still rather take my chances with a young star closer who's been pretty healthy than just use up one of those five spots on a big bat. There are so many easy ways to acquire offense. Honestly, I might take five pitchers the more I think about it and just use FA signings, trades, and the farm system to get offense.

that last inning, hughes started using those offspeed pitches and looked REALLY good. got squeezed this 10th strikeout then made that bad pitch to jones. but you can see what this kid is gonna do down the road.

So did we get anything back when Giambi and Abraeu walked and did we have to give up anything for CC, Tex and AJ? When does that apply?

i forgot to include that we need to offer Matsui arbitration & he needs to turn it down in order to qualify for compensatory picks... so say he wants to sign someplace else for a longterm deal & refuses arbitration, then whoever signs him owes us compensatory picks depending on where Matsui ranks on the list of DH's in MLB... if he's a type A free agent, meaning he ranks in the top 20% of players in his position, then we get 2 compensatory picks including the very first pick the signing team owns along w/a sandwich pick in between the 1st & 2nd rounds of the draft, unless that 1st pick is a top 15 pick, in which case we would get that team's 2nd round pick instead.

there's a stipulation that provided for the Yankees to sign CC & Teix, who were both Class A free agents, but they only lose the 2 compensatory picks w/the higher ranking player's team getting the 1st pick... so basically the Angels get our 1st round pick next year & the Brewers get the sandwich pick, which pretty much screwed the Brewers cuz had we not signed Teix they would have gotten both our picks.

i believe we didn't get any compensatory picks for Abreu because we didn't offer him arbitration... same goes for Giambi... i believe we did offer Mussina arbitration tho, so had he decided not to retire & signed w/another team, we would have been rewarded 2 compensatory picks from the team that signed him... hope that wasn't too confusing.
