Instead of sending out Randle after the trade - why not make it a 3 team deal?

NY gets Donovan Mitchell, Westbrook (bought out)
LAL gets Randle, Rose and Cam Reddish
Utah gets Fournier, Grimes, Talen Horton-Tucker and 6 1st rounders (3 unprotected)


LAL - gets vet PG in Rose, perfect 6th man in Randle, sheds Westbrook contract, wanted Cam before, don't sacrifice additional 1st round
Utah - gets their 6 picks, Grimes and by taking Horton-Tucker they get another young talent with 1 year left on deal
NY - save IQ and Obi, get out from under Randle contract, Westbrook can be bought out

This seems to very logically work for all 3 teams - better then doing two separate deals IMO. Who says no?

Maybe you could start with Rose but I doubt they do that from Knicks standpoint.

Fournier $18M + Cam $6M + a little more gets you to $24.3; that would be a prime starting point. Or just Randle $23.7 + a little more.

That little more stuff is any combo of Grimes, IQ, Obi. I guess you could include McBride but I don't think Utah values him and he would be a throw-in.

And then picks.

Good points on Obi n Mitch are redundant a little. But at least Obi can or attempts 3 pointers. I’m banking on his jumper improvement year to year. If cam isn’t traded he’s an option. Even better is Melo.

I don’t understand LA wanting Randle either. Maybe it’s LA not wanting Westbrook? 🤔🤷‍♂️ Or LA thinks Lebron can bring All Star Randle back 🤷‍♂️

He has not shown the ability to create off the dribble. He has not been able to show he has a mid range game. He has not shown he can consistently hit a 3pt shot. Nor does his form give me confidence he ever will. He has NO post game. He has only shown a consistent ability to score on fast breaks and lobs. What else has he consistently done on offense?
Do not see how some think Obi would be a better fit with DM. DM needs guys that can hit a three when guys fall back in help. He needs to have someone take some pressure off him on offense. Someone who can create and generate their own shots. Obi is not that. Randle requires a double team most of the time. DM would benefit from that as well.

Like I said, I am okay with the "let's see what the kid can do" but have not seen ANYTHING to support the notion that Obi can do more than just provide some dunks off the bench.

If we keep him, I hope you are right. His form is ugly so not that confident. Just think he will be a role player on many teams.

I would be more concerned with how DM plays with Brunson than Randle. Feel Randle fits better. As explained in my previous post above.

I love Obi. But we have to look beyond the dunks and him being the alternative to Randle. He can be a good scorer in the right system but he’s still just an energy guy at 24 years old. If we are projecting a long term starter, there has to be an assumption that he’s a very late bloomer. As far as a trade for Mitchell, he’s much more expendable than Quickley and Grimes for a ton of reasons. Plus his production for 15 mpg can be easily replaced by Melo, Paschall, or Gay if he comes back in a trade. But again not a knock on Obi. I would love to see him stay a knick forever if he’s willing to understand he may not be a long term starter.

Good points on Obi. I just don't see him as a starter until he's able to create his own shot. I think he would be better as a center on a five out line up if he could improve his 3 point efficiency. He basically just needs to hit from the corners and wing. I don't think the Knicks plan to play him at the 5 ever, else why sign Hartenstein.

I think Ainge made a strategic error trading Gobert first. Gobert's value won't decline as he single handedly can carry a top 10 defense. The ringer had a long article about Mitchell's struggles on defense- basically the Mavs averaged a made bucket every time they got DM into defending the ball on the pick and roll.

The make up for the Jazz looks like they will lose a lot of games. I can't see how becoming a West Coast Bradley Beal improves DM's trade value. The Jazz will be fighting for attempts because it's apparent Ainge has no interest in resigning the vets. The ideal situation for vets in that circumstance is to get bought out and go somewhere that wants them. All signs point to the Jazz having a disaster season.

Knicks just have to calculate the potential landing spots for DM and the price they can pay, then beat it slightly. I'm confident Brock Aller did this homework the day Quinn Snyder quit.

It seems like people are once again focused on what a player can't do instead of what they can do and how that fits into the team concept. How many shot creators do you want for a team when there is one ball? We have Brunson, Randle, RJ, Quick and possibly Mitchell. There is only 1 ball. Will Obi ever be an all star? No, but he does some things at an elite level. Hustle is a skill ask the Lakers about how they feel about letting Alex Caruso go. Obi's speed in transition is also elite and that translates directly to easy baskets. For a team who the past few years have been at the bottom of the league is easy baskets that is something that should not be ignored. Obi has elite cutting. When playing with players who will actually pass it to him when he cuts his lack of shooting is not a problem. Why do you think he gets so many easy baskets from cuts to the hoop? Teams are instructed to ignore him so he picks the perfect time to cut for an open dunk. So in a way his reputation for poor shooting helps him. No matter who he plays with or how much he plays the team always does well when he is on the court. The ball never sticks and he plays selflessly. Once teams start loading up on Micthell watch how many easy baskets Obi gets if he is still with the team.

I forgot about the major impact Obi provides that Randle will never provide, especially playing off the ball. Randle will do more pouting and complaining to the refs when he really wants to complain about the offense and how his touches will be even more minimized with DMitch. But Obi increases our pace and that’s something that will fit with 2 dynamic scorers and ball handlers. RJ is the 3rd guy who has improved his transition passes and playmaking. Obi will have a field day while Randle will continue to complain to refs and fans.

Randle made his bed with the thumbs down gesture. Now he will be under a larger microscope and we all know how that turned out last year with the crowds back in the building. So there’s several reasons for this move along with financial trade reasons in order to add Dmitch. With Randle traded, that means we might keep EF and Cam who we will need due to the lack of depth after the trade is completed.

I believe Martin explained it better than me on why Randle would be included. I think from a chemistry perspective, Obi is a better fit since he doesn’t need to dribble the ball to impact the game. With DMitch on board, that’s another player in the starting unit who is more affective on the ball. Randle doesn’t impact the game playing off the ball. And I don’t see Obi and Randle coexisting on the same team under Thibs.

So you have Obi, a guy that can only score on lobs at the basket to go along with MR who can only score on lobs to the basket? Don't understand how anyone that has watched Obi play the last couple of years thinks he is ready to be a starter on a playoff team?

I am all for let see what the kid can develop into but if it means not adding a 25 year old 3 time all star to do it, I'll pass. Considering a team does not get too many chances at that. Also curious as to why the Lakers would think Randle would be an important part of a chip team but Knicks di not? Not buying the rumor.

He has not shown the ability to create off the dribble. He has not been able to show he has a mid range game. He has not shown he can consistently hit a 3pt shot. Nor does his form give me confidence he ever will. He has NO post game. He has only shown a consistent ability to score on fast breaks and lobs. What else has he consistently done on offense?
Do not see how some think Obi would be a better fit with DM. DM needs guys that can hit a three when guys fall back in help. He needs to have someone take some pressure off him on offense. Someone who can create and generate their own shots. Obi is not that. Randle requires a double team most of the time. DM would benefit from that as well.

Like I said, I am okay with the "let's see what the kid can do" but have not seen ANYTHING to support the notion that Obi can do more than just provide some dunks off the bench.

If your take is what Obi has done in the past and proven in stone what he can do, I find that limiting.

With a dude like Obi you gotta project a bit.

Can he be a solid playoff starter? Not yet.

Almost like people don't actually watch the games.

If we are able to acquire Spider, I think we do not need a player of Randle's skillset and usage tbh. Spider, Brunson and RJ should be the scorers and primary ball handlers and initiators on offense. We just need the PF and rest of the frontcourt to run the floor, catch and shoot, rebound, defend and do all the little things. Randle cannot do that and won't be happy doing that.
