King missing a season perhaps set up the 23 win season that put knicks in position to win the lottery and get Ewing. If not for that maybe Ewing not a Knick?
In mid 1980's ACL was a death sentence. King Missed final 27 games the year he got hurt, Missed all 82 games the next season, and played just 6 games Ewings Rookie season. Given the timeline and injury expectations few players return to form after age 30 from serious injuries, let alone the ACL in that era. It sucked, and it was a shame, but Knicks had little insight to Bernards return to form after such along layoff and state.
King Mostly scored from midrange and in the paint with a frenetic quickness that was electrifying! His jumper was super fun to watch as he had a knack to rise and then get it off really fast. He was not a high flyer like Dr J were he could seeming stay in the air but did something different which was jump quick. He'd get to the rim in ways you did not anticipate then explode to the rim. I don't recall him probing and taking time dribbling. could be 40 years removed and perhaps his legend even in my pragmatic mind only recalls the great games or moments. I watched both back to back 50 pt games and it was super fun.
Playoffs? Just 28 games in his career. 18 with knicks. For sure a memorable series vs. Detroit. 12 games that season.
I was a bit surprised he got to HOF. Played 3 years in college, was an 1 team all American, no chips, no olympic history. Some guys like Bill Bradley had incredible college career to boost their HOF resume. Some like Spencer Haywood was MVP and ROY in ABA and carried the Olympic team in 1968 to dress up their HOF resume. Peak Bernard King was more than worthy but it was not sustained.
He was arrested for theft in college, alcohol issues with Nets, and some early problems with GSW. By age 25 he was clean and made his first Allstar team with GSW. The next 4 years in NY were incredible and he made an allstar team at age 34. He played 64 games that season and again was injured, missed a whole season again and signed with nets at age 36 playing 34 games and retired in 1993. Made 4 all NBA teams. Im glad he was so honored and perhaps his perseverance to over come many of his demons and physical injuries weighed in on the writers who revisited his career voting him in 20 years after he retired. This is a guy who matured and became the "Consummate Professional".
He was a knick for 5 seasons. Played 4. 206 games. That was it. Short but sweet.
