painful loss but the US is fundamentally unsound. they can't keep possession or execute good through balls. howard saves them time and time again. we just don't have the "talent" to compete at the higher levels. at some point, soccer has to be able to steal kids from the nba + nfl and mlb if it really wants to find the talent. terribly frustrating to watch bad pass after bad pass. we didn't deserve to win.

you can't be mad about taking belgium to the ropes, slapping portugal around like a sloppy bitch and giving it to ghana like it was a gypsy whore,

really good world cup and we proved we belong in the knock out stages of the cup,

in 2018, we're expected to get out of the group

Yep there more I think about it the USA could not score. They still lack talent and only advanced out of group stage because Howard carried them. Oh and Portgual sucks. Group of Death Ha! I guess any group featuring powerhouse Germany is a Group of Death. I wanna say USA will grow from this in 2018 but if Howard is retired they may not get out of their group

USA should be proud of their performance considering the time they were without Altidore, and even Donovan to a lesser extent. We are where Europe was with pro BBall in the 70s. Going to take more time to catch up. Soccer is gradually getting more popular in the States, we should be a force in another decade.

you know what it is, we don't even have a single player that's worth over 10 or 15 million bucks!

usa is a great team team with absolutely NO star individual

USA has many good goalies behind Howard, although Howard was otherworldly today. One thing the USA has been able to do historically is produce world class keepers like Brad Friedel, Casey Keller, Tim Howard, Tony Meola, Brad Guzan etc.

What was missing was 1) another Jozy Altidore. We only have one player tremendous size and athleticsm to win the ball up front and he was injured all tournament. Somehow we have no one else quite like him, while Beligum trotted out two guys under 21 that are better than Jozy (origi and lukaku). We also don't have the creative midfield talent that other nations have. Basically a true Point guard.

We were outplayed severely most of the game. We sure have a nice goalie though. On offense, as stated, we looked like a college club. Not that we are not any good, I just think the pressure from Belgium shook up the US team. But Belgium looked like a well oiled machine, though they struggled up front, some of that because of our goalie.

Yea MLS as a whole is comparable to NBDL, the CFL & minor leagues in quality with the occasional over the hill international star signing on to play here before hanging it up

Quality of the MLS has increased quite a bit in the last 5 years though. They need to play up Dempsey, Bradley and some of the personalities more. It would help if they brought back some American team stars like Jermaine Jones as well to play here. US gained a lot of popularity during this tournament so MLS needs to capitalize on it the immediate term.

Yup and the 19yr old kid Green who scored. Currently plays for B. Munich. More investors, tv deals, ads & marketing will put them in position to sign these guys.

It's not just about the system here. The US players are foyer and better athletes but there seems to be a pretty large skill deficit with teams like Belgium which isn't even top tier on their own. We need to really have two way traffic in foreign players being enticed to play here and also or own players playing a lot more for pro leagues outside to get exposure to the skill level expected of them. Also it will take some time.

we just don't have any players that are worth more than 10 million dollars, if we even have that.

Think about it

Croatia's Luka Modric is worth between 40 and 50 million, Rakitic was just sold for somewhere between 25 and 30 million and Kovacic looks to be on the way out of Inter for something around 20 to 25 million dollars.

And that's Croatia, a country with 4 million people that got seriously JOBBED in the group stage as a sacrifice lamb.

It doesn't help that our 'best' player ran away from europe like a little girl to play in seattle.

we just need to develop better players, i don't know how, but they have to play in europe and they have to star in the best leagues.

they can't run away from europe

the american approach to soccer is also more pragmatic, more mechanical,

you know, if you're from pretty much anywhere else in the world, football is literally a part of your culture, it's just how it is.

here, it's still just an activity, but maybe this is changing

Even though I was born and mostly raised in Brooklyn, I think I can understand why there were so many Yankee "haters".
It is crazy here in Germany, The Nürnberg team played in the same league as the Munich team but the money Munich spent was even more disparate than the money
the Yanks spent compared with the bottom teams (financially). I mean that Munich team rarely if ever even loses.
