You guys already know the moves he made this past offseason in acquiring Swisher, CC, AJB, Pettitte, Berroa & Ramiro Pena looks to be a nice young SS prospect for us to groom for the future.


As you can see, he's made his fair share of good moves & bad moves, & other moves that were a comparable wash, but for the most part the good moves outweigh the bad, & there's absolutely no denying the results achieved in terms of championships & division titles & overall games won during his tenure, which is unmatched by any other GM in baseball... the only young players he's traded away that have amounted to much in the majors that he didn't get good value in return for has been Mike Lowell & Ted Lilly... there have been other young players he's traded away like Juan Rivera, Nick Johnson, Dioner Navarro, Marcus Thames & Christian Guzman who have become quality players in the majors, but he got back good players in every 1 of those deals that helped this team... he's also signed a good amount of quality young talent for our minor leagues like Soriano, Wang & Cano, as well as drafted some very good young talent like Hughes, Kennedy, Joba & Austin Jackson while completely rebuilding the farm system from 1 of the worst in baseball to 1 of the best.

so yeah, take ur digs at Cashman, call him a bad GM or below average GM or whatever else u wanna call him, but there's really no arguing w/the facts here, & i still have yet to hear anyone tell me who would have done such a better job than he has over the time he's been here.

Unbelievable. Man what the hell can you say. Every loss just gets worse and worse. I still say that when they get everyone back (or close to it) this team should be pretty good. Problem is they have very little depth on this team right now. Guys went down right off the bat at key positions and they just don't have adequate replacements -- A-Rod, Posada, Nady, Bruney, Marte... Now Jose Molina goes down tonight... Not to make excuses but that's 1/3 of our starting lineup - including one the premier players in baseball in A-Rod - and two very important guys at the back end of the bullpen. Not many teams can sustain losses like that and still compete against top teams. Still, show some fight and some grit for Christ's sake. One thing's for sure - I don't blame Brian Cashman. The guy has continually made a lot of sound moves on paper IMO and quite a few of them haven't worked out for whatever reason. But I'm fine with the job he's done. In fact, I've questioned very few of his moves AT THE TIME THEY WERE MADE (that's the key - either be critical at the time or hold your peace). Huge discussion with my buddy about Cashman today. He hates him with a passion while I don't think he's been that bad for us. Blaming Cash is the easy way out here and I really think it's unwarranted. Look closely at some of his moves and tell me with a straight face they were terrible moves at the time:

- I liked his trade for Jeff Weaver at the time. Weaver had a lot of talent when he was with the Tigers. Weaver flopped and Cash flips him for Kevin Brown who I FUCKING HATED!!! Still, Brown was coming off a nice 14-9/2.39 ERA season with the Dodgers. We needed a legit starter to replace Pettitte who wasn't retained at the time.
- I liked the D'Angelo Jimenez for Jay Witasick move at the time as well. How do you get on Cash for this? Witasick just didn't produce. At the time, I thought it was a nice move to bulster the bullpen. And they guessed right on their infield prospects and held onto the right guy - Soriano turned out to be better than Jimenez.
- He signed Jose Contreras away from the Red Sox. Brash and bold, no one had a problem with this at the time. In fact every Yankee fan loved hearing about Theo Epstein throwing his office furniture around after he lost Contreras to the Yanks. Would've liked Cash to have gotten more for Contreras than Esteban Loaiza when he moved him but whatever, Contreras just never lived up to the hype and his value pretty much bottomed out at that point.
- Trading for Roger Clemens was a good trade. No matter how much you liked Boomer, Clemens was an upgrade over Wells at the time.
- Mike Mussina was a good signing overall despite a couple of down years.
- The Giambi signing wasn't terrible. He had productive seasons for us.
- The Matsui signing was a solid signing.
- I liked the idea of getting Alan Embree at the time for a lefty in the pen.
- Sheffield was a decent move but that was more George than Cashman. And when he dealt Sheff off to the Tigers he got 3 nice pitching prospects in return. I still think Humberto Sanchez can be a decent ML pitcher. Glad they got him back recently.
- I'm not a huge Damon guy, but he hasn't been a terrible Yankee and he was yet another player Cash stole away from his biggest rival.
- Traded for A-Rod. He goes out and steals the best player in baseball at the time away from Boston despite being over a barrel with the Aaron Boone injury. And he even gets Texas to pick up part of the contract to boot. Is it Cash's fault that A-Rod never produced in the post-season? We don't get to the post-season w/o A-Rod.
- Pavano turned out to be terrible but did you really hate the signing at the time? This dude had just won a WS ring and 18 games.
- The Jaret Wright signing was equally terrible but again, at the time, it looked pretty sound. He proved he was healthy with Atlanta the year prior hitting 95 MPH on the gun. I didn't have a huge problem with it at the time to be honest with you.
- The Randy Johnson trade was a wash but it was a trade I thought was worth making at the time. After pitching well initially, Javier Vasquez wasn't any good here plus there was no way we could've kept him around after the Red Sox meltdown. (Javier Vasquez was a good pickup for us when we first got him btw). We didn't give up anything special to get Randy anyway and we eventually traded him for Luis Vizcaino who was servicable and 3 minor leaguers (we used Olhendorf in the Pittsburg trade and Steven Jackson's been up this year briefly). Full circle - we hardly got burned here.
- Kei Igawa's been awful but yet again, did anyone know he was gonna be this terrible? Probably a little bit of an expensive, knee-jerk reaction to the Sox landing a top Japanese pitcher in Dice-K but here was a lefty that I think led whatever Japanese league he pitched in in Ks the year before we got him. Today it looks like a colossal failure. At the time though it appeared the Yanks upgraded their pitching staff.
- He held onto Hughes, Kennedy and Cano and didn't trade them to the Twins for Santana. I could've went either way on this at the time but I'll admit, part of me thought that was a lot to give up for a pitcher with a lot of miles on his arm. Cano's a very good player & proven at the ML level and Hughes and Kennedy pitched very well in the minors - who knew they'd have their problems in the majors. Hughes was thought of as the best pitching prospect in baseball at the time.
- I liked the Pudge pickup for Farnsworth last year. Farnsworth was God-awful and Cash was able to pick up a hall-of-fame catcher, albeit in the twilight of his career, for garbage when Posada went down last year and they desperately needed a catcher. Not Cash's fault Pudge didn't do anything while in pinstripes.
- I like his recent push to obtain and develop young pitchers in the minors. He understands pitching is where it's at. He's managed to restock the minor leagues with some quality arms - which has been tough because we've been fairly successful recently and haven't had top picks to use.
- I liked the trade for Demaso Marte and Nady. We didn't give up too much and got two quality players. Who would've known Marte would've been this bad and both would've gotten hurt early on this year. On paper last year, that was a trade you make. I would've loved to have gotten Jason Bay or Nate McLouth but they were never seriously discussed in that deal. Another well-thought out trade that backfired on the poor guy.
- Cashman had a tremendous off-season getting CC, AJ, Teixeira and Nick Swisher. I know it's the Steinbrenner's money that did most of the talking but Cash put in a lot of hard work getting those deals done.

Anyway, lets get A-Rod back here and see what happens. Hopefully we can put something together and start playing better because I can't take any more of this. It's been a complete horror show so far man...

The problem is you're not listing the moves he DIDN'T make. Passing on Johan I still believe will be the worst decision by a Yankees GM at least of this decade. Going into the season with a $200 mil team that had no bench or bullpen except a closer coming off surgery made no sense either. Putting together a $200 mil team last year that would have 40% of its games started by questionable rookie pitchers and having no backup plan made no sense either. And the net result has been a brutal 190 game stretch.

it hurts watching that happen to mariano...but the guy is old and just came off shoulder surgery. when the pitch doesn't bite, it gets crushed.

with that said, i firmly believe that LUCK has as much to play as skill and assessing talent. there is no way of telling who can perform in ny. you look at the #'s and then you acquire the player. how that player then performs under the scrutiny of media, fans, and pressure of contract...well that's just something you can't measure.

who knew brosius would come to ny and hit .300 with 100 rbi's? who knew o'neill would become a .300+ hitter in ny? we got lucky in the 90's. baltimore had a world of talent too but couldn't get it done. and now, our luck is on a down cycle. mariano failed starter - but greatest closer ever? come on...

the redsox now have the luck. did anyone predict jason bay to replace manny so easily? how about old mike lowell still getting big hits?

that's why i can't get on cashman. he is put in a unique place in sports...a city where it's the most difficult to build a team to live up to the fans expectations. and sometimes, a decision made, which seems great at the time, just doesn't work out and you are stuck with it for a while. giambi was an mvp guy before getting here...then all of the sudden he can't crack .250. that's not on cashman.

and that's why i don't get upset when the yankees lose. aj + cc + tex were great signings. trading for marte + nady were great moves. nady hurt. marte hurt. cc not playing to his past success. and tex is hitting worse than ramiro pena. who's fault is that?
