[...]

As of last night, the Knicks were still mulling a trade that would send Kurt Thomas, their best power forward, to the Phoenix Suns for the swingman Quentin Richardson. The trade was held up last week while the Knicks waited for insurance and medical records associated with a back injury Richardson had in 2004.

There were indications yesterday that the deal might be dead, although officials for the Knicks and the Suns said it remained a possibility.

Man, is this the process we always have to go through when bringing a young and erratic swingman? Geezz......

CLOCK'S TICKING ON KURT TRADE

By MARC BERMAN

June 28, 2005 -- The Knicks and Suns are frantically trying to complete the Kurt Thomas-for-Quentin Richardson trade by Friday. Otherwise, the teams will have to wait at least another three weeks to finalize the deal because the collective-bargaining agreement ends July 1.

A moratorium on trades will begin then, until the new CBA is made official — likely by July 23.

The Knicks refuse to take on Richardson's $48M contract because it is uninsured against a career-ending, back-related injury, and are scrambling to get an amended insurance policy. The Suns' attempt to insure Richardson's contract was rebuffed last summer but they signed him anyway.

During the old Knick regime, the team had a similar case with Luc Longley. Longley retired prematurely because of a degenerative ankle problem, but the contract was uninsured against that injury. The Knicks were unaware when they made the trade.

The Knicks — and not the insurance company that handles NBA contracts — paid off the $21 million left on Longley's pact. Insurance would have covered 80 percent.

Thomas hasn't yet named a summer-league coach, though practices begin tomorrow before the summer team jets to Las Vegas on Tuesday

you're right Bonn...what was i thinking...Isiah needs to lock up Penny Hardaway & Tim Thomas with multi-year contract extensions w/trade kicker this year if he can't trade them so he can use their contracts as valuable trade bait in 3 years.
apples and oranges. Those are awful players who will have little trade value, unlike Kurt, if re-signed.

trade will probably go through but i think it was leaked before it was intended to, that's why there's a big delay. i don't think it was scheduled to be finalized and announced until draft night or the next day.

it's also possible that the delay and posturing by the knicks is to see who we actually take at #8.

if it's granger, graham, green, wright, then maybe this deal is not done?

Once a trade is let out of the back it has a life of its own. IT must get done. There lies the possibllity that Isiah is using Q's back as leverage to improve the condtions of the draft pick due us.

I don't want this to happen again. Richardson is young so the risk looks like a good one, but still, I think this is a good thing Isiah is trying to do, getting the insurance. Our history indicates that we should be careful with players with back problems or any other injury, because they tend to end their careers here...

This sounds still sounds like a negotiating strategy by Isiah. Maybe he wants Pho to include pick #21 this year instead of the 2007 conditional #1. If the lack of insurance for a back injury wasn't a concern to the Suns, who are very careful with money, when they actually wrote the contract Q signed, then there's no reason to think it should be a legitimate concern for the Knicks. The Knicks can afford to have an uninsured injury much more so than the Suns can.

they got burned by failing to get the proper insurance on Luc Longley's contract when they made that trade...they're not going to make the same mistake twice.

Furthermore, Phoenix tried and couldn't get insurance on Q last year....the longer this drags on, the less likely this deal is to happen.
