I get that but. Basketball can only have 5 guys on the court at any time - and usually the team with the best player in the league wins the championship.

With OG, we have, I think, a real difference maker on both sides of the ball.

Now- with IQ & RJ, I think part of us giving up ‘more’ relates to the money - clearing RJ’s cap and giving us some flexibility this summer to maybe do something to improve in FA that would not have been available to us with RJ & IQ who we would have had to either sign, let walk, or do a S&T which might have given us pennies on the dollar.

We improved fit, defense, FA flexibility in the summer.

Toronto won too! They got 2 really good players that will help them, they have RJ locked on a contract that they can live with, they might have lost OG for nothing in the summer. And they can get a sense of is IQ worth $30M+ with the bulk of the season.

Both teams did quite well for their particular circumstances.

ALso people keep talking about Precious as a backup 5. I see him more as eventually paying dividends as a backup 4.

I took it differently. OG wanted NY and maybe CAA had a hand in helping with this, that is what won that battle. RJ is a unique fit for Toronto because that's his home town, so it was a good fit (I have doubts they wanted him from a basketball standpoint any more than other teams).

that's a good point as well, and i suspect with the CAA angle there was enough info conveyed to NY to convince them he wouldn't be a rental but would sign with us

Yessir. Same with Josh Hart the year before, we all knew he wasn't going anywhere after the trade.

Pretty sure Memphis offered 4 picks for OG last draft. He is top 3 switchable 3&D forward - maybe the most desirable mold out there right now. Highly doubt OG wasn't very much sought after. Difference most likely was, he wanted to be here and his pending contract made some teams hesitant.

I'd say yes, the deal was pretty much OG for Quickley.

RJ was a neutral salary dump at best. RJ's sort of falling into that dime a dozen mid-level swingman rut. He has played a lot of games and has had a pretty big opportunity here - he's been given a green light every time he has stepped on the floor as a Knicks, sometimes being the top scoring option to often being the 3rd option (along with Brunson & Randle).

He's kind of along the lines of Evan Fournier, Alec Burks, Tim Hardaway Jr, Quentin Grimes, or even Cam Reddish. You give them 30-35mpg and a green light, and they'll put up double digit points... but more than anything they're just minute eaters - they don't move the needle most nights. For every great night, you also expect a matching subpar game.

I've said it before, but RJ's comp is a long the line of Caris Levert. A wing who can create but with mid to bad efficiency. Those players are useful, but you're not winning a title if you're depending on them for consistency in the starting lineup.

Agree with this but want to add that a sixth man type is much easier to find in the NBA than a 3 and D wing. Knicks already have some available options; Brogdon, Clarkson, maybe even Alec Burks available so now it's all about fit.

Let's also not forget that after Sims's run for a few games, it's pretty clear that he isn't an impact player. Precious was also a big part of the deal and he can fill the back up 5 role more effectively than Taj or Sims.
