That game was tough to watch. A lot of things happened...
1. The Superstars didn't play well. Amar'e and Carmelo aren't on the same page yet. They didn't shoot well last night and they both settled for too many midrange jumpers. Good things happened when they went to the rim, but they stopped doing that in the second half. This team is only going to be successful if Amar'e makes some major adjustments to his game. He needs to defend the paint instead of being out on the perimeter and letting David Lee get to the basket. Chandler also got in foul trouble, and he's the only guy on this squad who defends the paint with any effort right now.
2. Foul trouble and injuries. At one point the lineup was Bibby, Douglas, Balkman, Novak and Stoudamire. That's not a good lineup, especially on defense. If the team was healthy, Bibby and Novak wouldn't get minutes at all. We saw just how much of a defensive liability Bibby is in this game, and through two games Josh Harrelson doesn't look he can even play. He has a big body, but to me he looks slow, unathletic and mentally unprepared. He's airballing shots and dropping passes. I'm not saying it's time to bench him completely, but there's a reason that Jared Jeffries keeps getting minutes even though everyone hates him. It might be time to look at Jerome Jordan a little more, at least at the five.
3. Landry Fields was a stud and so was Bill Walker. Through two games Fields sure looks like he belongs in the starting lineup.
The positive is that it's just one game. Of course, New York should easily beat a Golden State team missing Steph Curry, but nights like this are going to happen between the defensive flaws, chemistry issues and the lockout. Ultimately where this team finishes in the regular season hardly matters as long as they get in the playoffs, though.
