Not sure where he fits in on the roster with so many guards under contract. He could be a draft-and-stash, a minimum second round exception guy, or a 2-way contract. But there’s a world where he can eventually be a good bench secondary playmaker. Nickel is a Merrill/ Hauser type shooter. Shooters are always needed. Probably more of a 2-way contract guy but that’s fine. Maybe he finds a roster spot due to the Knicks financial situation and the fact that he’s an older rookie with an nba ready skill.
Clearly the Knicks had no interest in any center. This either tells us they are trying to find a path forward with Mitch, or they really love Hukporti, or they feel comfortable they will add good center depth via free agency or trade. But center has quickly become the most important hole on this roster to fill. The biggest questions are what the Knicks do at center and what their goal is with the second apron. The draft answered neither question.
I will say, Diawara, Kayil and Nickel headlining summer league should be a fun group. Knicks adding 2 quality role player prospects plus a bunch of future second round picks (and let’s not forget 3 draft rights guys) isn’t a home run draft, but seems like a solid single.
Their moves heavily point to them looking to retain Mitch while still being under the 2nd apron. The fact they didn't go big man in the 2nd round though says that they have plans for Huk who will probably sign a multi year deal similar to Mo.
Knicks could of had Carr & Reed(given what the Spurs offered for him at #26). Who could of been rotational bench pieces locked in rookie contracts for the next 4 years. So for them to not go this route tells us they are all in on retaining Mitch while staying under the 2nd apron.
The 2nds they acquired also could be useful if for whatever reason they needed to package some of them to dump a contract.
McCullar/Nickel seem like nice complimentary pieces for each others games. Same for Mo & Huk.
Hopefully we get to see them all grow together.
I did the updated math on the second apron thread. It still likely comes down to Mitch or shamet, but you never know.
Possible, but if it was Shamet. They could have drafted Reed to cover potentially needing C depth, and still had money for him since his payout should be less than Mitch.
Anything can happen when FA starts. See IHart situation from years ago. And they get no choice but to choose Shamet. Very possible they simply wanted to put themselves in position to keep one of them without committing at the draft. Which would suck if we still lose out based off what we could have had. Low probability though that happens.
If Shamet does end up being the guy that stays. Would have to use the vet min market for a C. Our bench shooting would be pretty damn strong though.
